It’s fair to say, classic ownership, even for restomods, is still a lot more troublesome than the modern stuff - I run a list of jobs that need doing on both.

Slightly random question but as I’m currently fancying a change from Aston to Porsche maybe this is the thread to do it…..

However, I am starting to think, that this one is going to be very hard to top, I guess it's only if a change of user case if forced upon me, that the decision would be easier.

I had a massive JFDI moment in November and bought a 991.2 GT3. Like most cars I've had, I thought, I'll have this for a year maybe 2, then have a change. However, I am starting to think, that this one is going to be very hard to top, I guess it's only if a change of user case if forced upon me, that the decision would be easier.
Today, in the sunshine for once, I took it out across some fabulous and quiet roads on the Herefordshire, Shropshire borders. At one point, I was on a long sweeping well sighted left hander and I just eased it out through the gears, tyres keying in, sports exhaust on, speed and G force building, whilst laughing out loud and I thought, how the hell do I follow this at some point. I may have peaked.
So, I'm in no rush to change, but have I caused myself a problem here ? What did any other GT3 owners follow with, or maybe accompany it with in the garage ?
Post my GT3 (997.2), I got a 718 Spyder to scratch the porsche type itch. More recently an Alpine A110 S joined it. Still hankering after an Aston and might revisit Ferrari with a F12 or a 458.
It’s fun to try different things, at least to me, and I’m fortunate that I can hold onto a few at any one time.

Well after 3.5 years of a 991.2 scratched an itch and went for a RS4 ! Love it ! & the other half can get a boot full of stuff in it !
Re the boot....for me that's a very good reason to stick to a 2 seater with limited luggage / stuff space...!
I’d had previous GT models, and bought a 991.2 GT3 Touring, new.
However, never quite gelled with it.
Replaced it with a ‘base’ 991.2 Coupe, narrow-body, manual, 19” wheels, nice simple spec.
Was much happier. Sometimes ‘less is more’.

Easy answer is to keep it till you're too old to drive it
Had a gt4 (but drove my mates gt3) got an Exige as a proper drivers car as the gt4 was boring. The Caterham/ atom boys might say the same about my car though! Can’t knock them as I will probably join them in the future!

Made me laugh. Get a proper lightweight to go with it.
Maybe keep the GT3 and get a more extreme car to go along with it. My daily GTS unfortunately, not a GT3, with my crazy car.

Similar but still have the GT3. If I want to go out for a drive on country roads this wins….ludicrously good to drive for a 50 year old car.

GT4 more clinical than boring I’d say.

Might be a better way to put it actually Manny. The GT3 with that engine was definitely more entertaining.
Corkys I don’t think I explained it properly. I had a GT4 and then I replaced it with a 410 Exige as I found the GT4 boring/ clinical! You definitely have a good two car garage!
After many GT3’s, the last being a 991.2 GT3 touring, i felt the modern cars were getting too big, too fast and didn’t quite excite me unless on track, thus i went hardcore old school :
Saying that i have recently come back into GT3 ownership with a 997.2 (which i suppose was the last narrow body car) :

That is sublime, MrVert. I'm a fairly regular visitor to lovely Burnham Market, seen plenty of nice cars there, but I think your green 911 takes the proverbial biscuit! Just gorgeous and very much the direction I'd be going if the funds allowed.
Funnily enough, as was thinking that my 991.2 gt3 is too fast for congested roads round Surrey, so, in a year or two, looking to replace with a restomod Alfa GTV6. I had a standard one 30 years ago.
Almost bidded on the one below, still kicking myself that I didn't, but would need to store it somewhere.....:
https://carsonline.bonhams.com/en/listings/alfa-ro...
I think for a lot of car-nuts there is on-going room for a Porsche in their life ... maybe the question also could be, what would you see as serious alternatives ?
Agreed that a tactile fast enough little four seater would be really good around town and small country roads ...
Agreed that a classic 911 would be lovely for quiet Sundays and car shows ...
Agreed that in the history of porsche a nice transaxle car would be really interesting ...
Alternatives to what a GT3 does ? On track I think they take a lot of beating in more ways than one ... but on the road there are certainly "supercar" options ... hence although the Touring is now almost an ST, I don't think that this is the best road going car of the GT3 type ... but for road / track ? Maybe.
On the other hand, for anybody who is unlucky a GT3 can now be a very expensive car to make a mistake in on track ... insurers seem to be turning away from them ... ?? Maybe the experience of others is different ??

Similar here. Although it was a while ago and after a 996.2 GT3.
A 1970 2.2s
Something engaging - so if you're GT3 is already a manual you may wish to try PDK/Auto
Something open top as you have a coupe?
Maybe something forced induction to compliment, or change from, NA.
Ultimately it has to engage you in the feels.
Something that engages at legal limits too maybe...
The 981/718 platform is a really good one, being 991 for the most part. The Spyder getting a lot of love from those that have tried one.
Alpine's are lauded by those that know.
Or maybe an AMG open top?
R8 V10 spider
The McLarens seem to offer quite a different feel.
Or as others have pointed too... go back in time not forward... a reliable, rare and stylish classic would give such a different vibe...
Bloody marvelous problem to have / journey to be on

Naa Ferrari overrated. McLaren do it better.
GT4, 991.2 GT3, 992 GT3 then a Mazda CX-60 PHEV. Moved to the country where we don’t have a garage and honestly, a bit over the hassle that accompanies expensive, fast cars.

Macca Drive better. Panels can be fixed.

I’ve tried a couple of Ferraris over the years, but did find them a challenge to use in my everyday life. My 430 Scud was a bit full on and attracted too much attention, whilst my 612 was huge (I had the kids in the back at that time). I’m wondering if the F12 could be a sweet spot. Clearly I won’t drive that much either though🤣.

Yes same car with a few more extra mods and a green wrap, easier to hide the scrapes and scars of hillclimbing, and folk for some reason get these two cars mixed up
My GT3 journey went like this ……..
And now we’re here ……
The 991.2 is definitely the car I should have kept, but the Spyder never disappointed and I’m currently enjoying the “old school” Bentley, it makes a drive an occasion
Currently, after 20 years, giving Porsche a break.
Hey...thanks for all of the replies and suggestions, definitely some food for thought at some point.
I do like a drop top, having had a few, but I'm appreciating the solidity and better handling of a coupe. However, I do wonder if a 720s / 750s spider would at some point be good to have. I've driven the 720 version and was blown away by the ride and general useability. But at the same time, I like the Porsche for what seems like pretty strong reliability and super good value warranty and I can warranty up to 15 years, should I so wish to.
But the pictures of classics tempt me ! I'm leaning towards a classic to go with it at some stage, keep looking at Alfa 1750 GTVs, I'd need to find a really sorted one, as I don't mind some tinkering, but definitely not fixing ! The classic 911s also look great on here, would probably need to try one.
Spyders / 718's - I can never get comfortable, can't get the seat back far enough.
The other stand out mention in replies for me is the F12, always loved these, I'm a little put off by the potential bills from what I here, but you put off enough not to consider at some point.
Thanks all, lovely to get some opinions on this...

At that price point CGT. (Had a 993 GT Evo before) IMO
Similar for me. Now nearly 7 years in to 991.2 Touring and nothing in the last few years has made me want to switch. So have looked to the older cars and found I now drive them and get more reward on UK roads at legal (ish) speeds. Makes much more sense for me and people are genuinely happy to see them out and about. Still will use the Touring for longer road trips or the occasional track day, but the old stuff is spellbinding. It’s fair to say, classic ownership, even for restomods, is still a lot more troublesome than the modern stuff - I run a list of jobs that need doing on both. Still delighted to have my time with them though.
Sun came out briefly just now and I took my 991.2 gt3 out round the block. Dear lord its brilliant and reminded me why I do my job with it's many stresses. So, I'm going to go with 'nothing'.
Can't see myself selling for a long long time. Might add a cheaper track car in the future, if I get enough time to do more than 1-2 trackdays a year

I also went GT3 (albeit 991.2) to 718 Spyder. I really prefer the character of the 718 on UK roads, the slightly smaller size, but will likely part with it this year. It fills a similar purpose as my 1M (in terms of a fun, small(ish) manual sports car). I'm lucky enough to have other cars and the I don't need a GT3 alongside the other stuff either. I know it's big petrolhead bravado to daily a GT3, but I fundamentally didn't enjoy the car in that way. Fantastic for the weekend drives or trip to the track, but it's too firm for the B roads in bucks. I'm looking for more of a daily compatible sports car - debating whether to get into another 911, possibly a base Carrera or GTS.

Lovely colour scheme. Mine’s gentian blue, but came with black wheels (I was second owner). I must change to silver wheels, or perhaps weiss gold, as it’s a much more classic look.

All GT3s, for me, are a bit 'meh' on most UK roads. A decent road trip (preferably Europe) or track day is where they really shine.
So for a nice, enjoyable weekend drive, I can totally see where the old school stuff hits. Also, just the sheer compactness too - was in Sports & Classic last week and there was a beautiful silver '73 2.4 and it's just so narrow and svelte looking.

I do wonder about that tbh. The appeal of the older cars is (for me anyway) primarily due to the (much) smaller size and lightness. I'm not as convinced that the general feel and controls of the older cars (as in really much older rather than say late 90s onwards which these days is definitely 'old') will be quite as appealing to many people.

Carburettors, skinny, higher profile tyres, yes lighter too. I think it all adds up and the sum of the differences makes for a very different experience.
You can always fettle older cars a bit too. Parents have Twisted Defender and, having driven (and also owned) Defenders for decades, the difference is bonkers - night and day. One example being that the doors actually s
t with a nice, hefty clunk, rather than not quite shut with a clang.

You need to drive cars near the edge of their performance capabilities for them to be exciting…whilst I love driving my GT3 it is not as exciting as a 70’s 911 on country roads. Yes some people won’t like the fact the brakes need a shove and the heavier steering at parking speeds but the steering feel and the way that they drive is just sublime.
They actually make great road trip cars too…a 70’s air cooled 911 is a much better car for the Swiss Alps than a GT3 given the Swiss attitude to speeding. They’re also very capable of sitting on the Autoroute at high speeds.

Spot on. With a few subtle tweaks and upgrades, the old stuff can be super fun and not too scary (brakes, suspension, etc). In the dry in the UK, I’ll always take an old car out rather than the GT3. The GT car is super special and always a joy, just I don’t get to fully utilise it unless on track - it’s way too fast for our roads.
I moved on from this 991.1 GT3
To a 991.2 GTS - we had a baby and i wanted a car we could all use when we wanted. Cutting down from 3 cars to 2 was also alot easier and having a 911 i can use every day regardless of weather is a huge plus. However i will be back in a GT3 or RS at some point.

not as much as you'd think, and predominantly only by those who've had one...s'not a GT product..

Yes, the 718 is.... but not the 981 pictured..

all slow by modern standards but eventful to drive
All very tasty too. IMHO I'd also add the 355 to this, because it's still a very pretty car and sounds and drives well too.
This ... 991.2 GT3RS for trackdays and this in place of a prospective 992.2 GT3 Touring.
Second in ECOTY to the almost three times more expensive 911 ST (by one point ?) and Autocar drivers car of the year 2024 ... let's hope that McLaren are really going to make Porsche OPC's wake up.
As a matter of interest Leeds McLaren delivered two Arturas this morning ... the second also to a Porsche owner ... (with an ST !)
I wasn't joking when I said I couldn't bring myself to plead for a GT3 Touring allocation ...
So far, it's amazing. So good as a road car.

Nice Chris. Here’s my 570 spider

Does seem to be a bit of a McLaren resurgence atm.
Its 10year anniversary of new McLaren cars LT range and the F1 wins their first F1 constructors championship since 1998.
I know quite a few people have recently moved from Porsche GT to McLaren.
I definitely enjoyed by extended test drive in 570S. i just dont know if I can pull off rockstar doors. Lol.

They do vehicle dynamics very well. Also look at the weight of their cars. For me it’s pork and macca that do it right

Agree, I think the 981 Spyder is rather under rated, but as said, following a 991.1 and .2 GT3, it never disappointed in any way …. And the noise was just epic, pretty much on par with the GT3 on full chat ….. it really should be a full status GT
…. But then I’m a bit bias

When regular non LT McLaren's can whoop 992 GT3 RS's around a track, you know McLaren are either at a different level all together or perhaps Porsche GT cars are just over rated.
Well, the thing that’s a bit mental and also very easy to overlook, is that with McLaren, the model number is the horsepower.
I think it’s probably one of the greatest creations of a new brand in recent automotive history. On a par with how Toyota nailed it with Lexus in the 90’s. They could have been copycat Ferrari, or Lamborghini, but managed to create a whole niche for themselves and slide right into it.
The sound of a McLaren on start up is a real thing. A good noise to have travelling with you on a road trip.

I would caveat and counter and say… yes the LT will be faster over a lap. 1 Lap. A single lap.
Will it still be doing the same thing 10 laps/15laps later? You know the Porsche GT/RS will.

991 GT2 RS MR won’t. Needs the intercooler bottle topped up after a couple of tours of the Nordschleife.

No idea how someone has the minerals to punt one of those around the ‘Ring. I’ve seen two return to the car park on recovery trucks on track days.

You are comparing a non LT car with a similarly sticky tyre and almost 50% again as much power to the 992rs on a track that can't really exploit the aero advantages. What exactly did you think would happen....?
The mclarens do some things very well (driving position especially) but equally, they are imo significantly lacking Vs Porsche in others. I don't see the point of attempting to denigrate one over another. Just buy the car you like and don't feel the need go round bragging one 'whoops' another overrated one imo....live and let live.

well, they are quite a bit more expensive as new cars (7xx vs GT3/RS)
981 Gts to 981 GT4 to 991.2 GT3 to 991.1 GT3
Having done enough trackdays in the GT3's to reach my (pathetic) potential and escpaed with no damage or incidents we decided we wanted something more suitable for touring. I always found the GT3's too noisy and revvy for long distances, plenty don't though.
Bought a 2018 570S Spider last October for the same retail price as the 991.1 GT3, so far so good, we think of excuses now to go for a drive at the weekend, never did that with the GT3, was always looking for an excuse to find a track day, otherwise it felt a bit strained driving it in traffic.
We're even enjoying the rubbish Iris system in the McL!
The cost of servicing, warranty and build quality of the GT3 is way way better than the McL of course, I miss that.

Pork is clinical whereas McLaren more dynamic. Just don’t get the steering feel from pork. Macca wins for touring.
After having GT3's and RS's from 997 to 992, including a 992 touring, I fancied a change and bought a Lamborghini Hurucan Tecnica. Great car as it has an awesome NA engine and a much softer ride on the road, despite looking quite extreme. GT3's got more track focused over time, the latest 992 being almost too harsh for the road. Brilliant cars. Will have another some day. Still got my 992 Sport Classic which is much softer for the road - and manual.

Just googling the reviews on the 981 and 981 Spyder and every one is extremely high. I cannot find a low or bad rating anywhere? Every rating is extremely high, minimum 4/5... and there are lots of reviews with hugh ratings. Maybe i'm looking it the wrong places for the low ratings.
991.2 with wing then 992 Touring now in a 992 Turbo S.
Comfort wins for me, especially on the horrendous roads around where I live. GT3’s are more of an event and oh what an engine!

I think you'll find anything that doesn't have the word "Superlegover" adorning its flanks is probably slightly more subtle.

Not seen a wrecked Mc there. Not that they aren’t ridiculously quick.
Probably has to do with the fact Porsches outnumber McLarens on the Ring by orders of magnitude.

You're not trying hard enough
911R can be found slagging them off in pretty much any thread on PH about them :
Here's your starter for 10 :

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
The ever delightful 911R's posts on the subject, make for entertaining bluster, he HATED/S them with a passion (you'll have to go back at least 4 years through his posting history, as he's changed his username on at least 4 occasions, and got banned, but has since recently come back under another username) :
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/profile.asp?h=...
Personally I think they're stunning looking and the pick of the 981 bunch
There's some great input on them in this thread (if you can ignore 911R's rants) :

Slightly random question but as I’m currently fancying a change from Aston to Porsche maybe this is the thread to do it…..
I know there are a huge number of variables but what kind of losses are you guys taking when switching out of cars? I fancy a 991.1 GT3 as that would be about the top of the budget but suspect I may only keep for a year before switching again. Are we talking £5k, £10k, £20k losses in depreciation over a year? What’s the average used Porsche / Ferrari / McLaren buyer comfortable with when chopping and changing?
A 991.1 gt3…….that will a roll of the dice as far as deprecation goes with the potential engine issues, try for one with the most up to date engine swap revision.
Unless you were considering a 992 GT3 variant I'd say that depreciation won't be much of a factor; it's the dealer spread which will be the cost to you.
991.1 GT3s probably have the widest spread because of their engine history and that it's imperative to have a Porsche warranty on them - depreciation could be a factor. The earlier models are a known quantity and relatively static in value terms but the dealer spread is probably £10k minimum and maybe up to double that for an OPC (i.e. Porsche approved used)?

Similar. 992 GT3 manual to a 992 Turbo Cab in the same colour. I was concerned about sellers remorse and procrastinated for a few weeks prior to committing, but after a couple of hours in the Turbo, I never looked back. It's such a fast car without the fuss, the 18 ways are a lot more comfortable than the buckets and it's 12 seconds to drop or raise the roof up to 32 mph. I genuinely think the Turbo(S) is an under-rated 911 - just look at the number of Turbo threads / posts on PH compared to GT3/4/RS. The 992 Cab is also under-discussed; it is so much more practical than the arguably more stylish but top heavier Targa, especially in the UK increment weather.
The OPC sold my GT3 within 24 hours of listing!
Interesting discussion and lots of similar journeys in terms of other cars before and/or after GT3 life.
I went from 981 Spyder --> 991.1 GT3 --> 718 Spyder --> Exige 410. The GT3 for me is by far the superior car out of that group, however as a driving experience the Exige matches, if not betters it in terms of drama, but has a much narrower operating window in terms of usability so very much depends on what intended usage is. Enjoyed the 981 Spyder but found the engine a bit flat at the top end. Never really gelled with the 718, felt dull after the GT3 and too polished to be truly exciting, even if extremely capable and stunning to look at.
Want to get back in to a GT3 at some point for sure.
