Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I have been experiencing starter grind on start up and now what I think is alternator whine, I assume because the weather is getting hotter in Az. The Alternator whines on start up and goes away once warmed up and the starter grind sometimes. I assume these are from drying out from the constant heat and cooling process?
I uploaded to Youtube since too many trying to upload here

Get a mechanics stethoscope and listen to the alternator and various pulleys. It may be you need both a new starter and new alternator. How many miles?
Yeah, DBJoes suggestion on getting an automotive stethoscope will help pinpoint it. You can get them for under $25 pre-tarrifs on Amazon.
At first listen it sounds to me like it may be the SAI, especially if the sound goes away once the engine/cats are warm. Mine is going as well. Just haven't taken the time to replace it. I have found that mine makes more noise on cold days than it does on warm or hot days. But once the engine/cats are warm, you don't hear it anymore.
I'll try to find a video of mine so you can compare.

Thanks and yes only on start up and cold....Im guessing since you havent replaced yours, its a part that can go for a little but will need it replaced?
It's not a critical part that causes any catastrophic failure. But it does make alot of noise in very cold weather. You can rebuild it or replace it. New Oem part is expensive, but I understand their is a Mercedes part that is half the cost of the oem part that works well.
Sounds the same as my SAI. Lasts about 40-50 seconds after a cold start and stops right before engine rpms go down. I only really hear it if I pop the engine lid. Although I've purchased the part to replace it with, I'm going to put power to the replacement part to see if the whine sounds about the same.

Yes seeing the part anyhwere from $550 to $1k from Porsche...I found the thread here
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...options-3.html
with the Benz and here the actual part#
https://www.autohausaz.com/pn/UR-0001407085
I believe that this may be the part. I saved this link a few years ago from one of the SAI threads, but can't confirm with 100% certainty. Hopefully someone can confirm or provide the right part number.

Could it be this?

I mean they only blow air and they all run on 12v so it should work. Just tough to justify trying for $250!
$250? If I didnt know better I would think that was deal vs Pelican has the Porsche part at $2k WTF

I got this one today. Used OEM from eBay ($37 shipped). When I plugged it into power, it sounds just as loud as the one in my car right now (sounds like a small handheld shop vac). Which leads me to believe that the current one in my car sounds normal. I do have a new one (knock off) coming and will compare how that sounds.

If anyone is interested in what a new, eBay, made in China SAI clone looks and sounds like, here you go. Looks the same, sounds the same, but probably won't last 25 years. My original SAI still in the car sounds the same which is why I'm not replacing it.

I assume your chinese knock off doesnt have any part #s on it? I just got mine today and it seems to be a Bosch unit or one that Bosch uses as it PA66-GF15-M25 but no Bosch decal. Mine is on the tube and yours has it on the housing itself.
No markings on the Chinese eBay part but the used OEM part has all the appropriate casting marks and Bosch sticker. Both have the same sound volume as the one still in my car. If the one in my car gets any louder, I'll tear the original part and regrease the seals and reinstall. If I butcher the part and make it unusable, I'll replace with the used OEM. The Chinese eBay part is the last resort if the first 2 options fail.
I don't know if it will help with the noise, but you can take compressed air and blow out the air filter in the housing.
Lots of dirt came out of mine.
Just installed the new one and took it for a drive, that noise was there on start up and went away on warm up. I have to say I never heard that noise when I got the car and now I hear, even on a new unit. Gotta love the 996 lol
You can always take the old one apart, clean and regrease the bearings and run 12v through it to see if there is less noise. I'm starting to think that the blower noise is normal from my current SAI is normal, even at 92k miles.
04 996, at 100k mikes the pump started to make a squealing sound. Replaced with an Amazon knock off, which has the numbers molded on the pipe part. It was louder than the original pump, and after 30 days of use it blew the 40 amp fuse. Amazon took it back, and Ive got a nice quiet lower mileage eBay pump on the car now.
i wouldnt recommend the knock off pump. 1 year warrantee and they had me return it to Amazon instead of dealing with it
