Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check worn valve guides' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check worn valve guides' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It's been in and out of my local independant 4 times now in Leeds to find a solution but they've now given up even though they've seen the problem for themself on a test drive.

get a reputed 911 place to do a leakdown test on it...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Been a few months since i posted about this and I'm desperate for some advice if anyone can help me. Blue smoke it would appear is an unfixable problem. If i floor it round a long sweeping bend through the gears (tiptronic gears that is) i occasionally get a real erruption of blue smoke out the back - massive cloud of it! But only whilst it's pedal to the metal and gone up to 4th or 5th. I also get a 3 or 4 second cloud of smoke on start up following any period of lively driving which doesn't come back after I've covered a few miles. It's been in and out of my local independant 4 times now in Leeds to find a solution but they've now given up even though they've seen the problem for themself on a test drive. It drives beautifully day to day and if i didn't belt along occasionally you'd never know. Advice given to me was "there's nothing wrong with that engine it must be down to the fact it's a tiptronic but somehow oil is getting into the manifold and being burnt off". What do you guys reckon - should i get a second opinion, do you think it is purely down to the fact its a tip, or am I possibley sitting on a time bomb 996 engine failure ? :?:
Get someone to follow you to see if it is coming out of the tailpipes, or just generally out of the back (e.g. engine cover). If it is the exhausts there is oil surge into the cylinders somehow (worn valve guides?) If not, the oil on the manifolds sounds a good explanation, but also means you must have an oil leak as well somewhere (or spilled a load when you topped it up).
it's coming out of one of the exhausts for sure and the oil level thing has been checked out so it's not that. Garage has discounted any prblem with the piston (but they might not be right eh?) :nooo:
thanks for your advice guys, i received a hint about the level of diagnostic that my indy was prepared to do when they said "problem is we don't get much diagnostic time when doing warranty repairs" makes me wonder if i should put my hand in my pocket and pay for my own tests?
I'm sure Haran (F1 Dragon) had a similar prob with his 4S. Can't remember what it was, but might be worth asking him.
If you have a warranty (is that an OPC warranty, or a specialist?) then I'd apply a bit of pressure- the warranty is there to get the problem sorted, and they can't just impose a restriction on the diagnostic time surely?
according to my indy in leeds they do restrict diagnostic time yes! as for F1 Dragon - I've been in touch with him and yes he did have a similar problem but it wasn't similar enough to mine to help :nooo:
Its not an OPC warranty sadly (u live n learn) but i think that it's a good idea to get on the phone and become a pain in the butt to get it sorted. I'm reassured by my indy that there's nothing wrong with the engine but it takes the fun out of having a good thrash now I know the consequences. :frustrated:
Get the leakdown test, mentioned earlier, done. This should take no more than an hour. If nothing else, the peace of mind it could give you would be worth the investment. At worst, it will confirm a problem with the rings/bores/valves
Thanks guys - this is such a great forum for advice! I'm gonna do the leakdown test and get to the bottom of it. It baffles me (no pun intended). :chin:
