Suggestion

Remove the carpet and plastic panel at the back of the boot and see if you can see a hole - if so get some mastic and fill the gap!

The only seal under the boot lid surrounds the storage area, but there is no seal nearer the windscreen to prevent water running into the battery area, etc.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I've just purchased a very low mileage C4S and have noticed water in the boot presenting itself as dampness under the spare wheel with beeds of condensation on the spare and jack, etc. The only seal under the boot lid surrounds the storage area, but there is no seal nearer the windscreen to prevent water running into the battery area, etc. Should their be one as I'm guessing water is getting in via the battery area and finding it's way down to lowest point. OR do you think I have a aircon leak or other problem. Any opinions/advice would be much appreciated. :thumb: Thanks, CT

POST 2Original post

right better get in there before an air-cooled gag from Seagull ! condensation does happen, so not uncommon, but how much water ?

POST 3Original post

Yes, you should have one continuos seal that runs around the top of the boot and seals against the boot lid, the battery is outside of this seal and doesn't have it's own seal, but it should be covered by a plastic cover. You may hve a leak where the wiring for the amp comes through the bodywork. Remove the carpet and plastic panel at the back of the boot and see if you can see a hole - if so get some mastic and fill the gap!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

enough water to fill the gap between the rim and the tyre on the pare. So if their is no seal beyond the lip of the boot storage area how does the water drain that enters the battery compartment via the tea bag plastic surrounding the battey cover? I've heard that the aircon drain can get blocked and this could create a similare problem. Cheers CT

POST 5Original post

Good question, there must be a drain somewhere, OPC will be able to tell you - they are actually quite helpful if you approach them in the right way - after all, they want your future business.

POST 6Original post

I had water in the boot because the drains in the cowl area got totally blocked and a small swimming pool had been created! When you drive around the water finds its way down to the boot. Good pic here: http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=33028&highlight=cowl

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Weekend wonder, Very helpful! I'll check this out.

POST 8Original post

Hi CT, Do you also notice any dampness inside the car near the footwell area? - If you've got mats, maybe worthwhile to remove them and have a look. As mentioned within the link from WW, there should be 4 drain pipes, be careful not to push thru these too hard. A vacuum cleaner (when the area is dry) will be useful to remove the debris that can clog up the area. All four should be accessible without removing the battery. Another point that may be worth looking into - What is the condition of the seal around the boot storage area? This should be plush without and cracks or tears and shouldn't look too dried out as this can cause the rubber to shrink and cause adverse effect. I used the following on the seals around the boot and doors (and repeat every few months) to keep the rubber seals plush and prevent cracking/tearing ect - Can be picked up from Maplins for a few quid and far cheaper then changing the complete seals and good as general maintenance.
