A friend of mine works for 3M, they make all sorts of adhesives probably the stuff to stick the number plate on with but they also make a lot of products that remove adhesive, I have a can of 3M cleaner and adhesive remover that is exelent and would remove your number plate without the need to start pushing knives up the back of it and risk damaging your paintwork.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am just changing the number plates on my 996 C4S having been bought a private one. The front one looks very straight forward to change as it is held on with two screws. Even I can sort that one out, but the rear plate looks like it is stuck on as it has no screws in it. Has anybody changed one or has any tips for me? Cheers, Hodko

POST 2Original post

The front is like you say, very easy, take the current plate off and place it over the new one and drill new holes so they line up. The rear is held on by double sided foam centred sticky tape, usually supplied by the firm who made the new plate up. I know Porsche supply the tape if you ask as I've seen them do it. Just pry it off gently, I used a sharp kife to get under the plate and seperate it. Once off remove as much off the old tape as possible, it's a good time to thoroughly clean that area. Then just stick the new plate on. Some people have been known to use Velcro but I think 'the Law' might not take kindly to this. :hand:

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers Stuart. There was me thinking that my German supercar might need something other than a bit of good, old fashioned, Blue Peter stylee, double sided sticky tape!

POST 4Original post

A friend of mine works for 3M, they make all sorts of adhesives probably the stuff to stick the number plate on with but they also make a lot of products that remove adhesive, I have a can of 3M cleaner and adhesive remover that is exelent and would remove your number plate without the need to start pushing knives up the back of it and risk damaging your paintwork. I think you may be able to get it at any place that makes road signs or applies reflective materials to ambulances and police cars

POST 5Original post

You can buy the Double sided sticky pads from Halfrauds !!

POST 6Original post

I think they are "heavy duty sticky fixers". Thats what I've always used anyway.

POST 7Original post

If the rear wont come off easily, try and get the adhesive remover, as mentioned in one of the posts above. If you cant find any of that, another user on here used fishing line. Run the fishing line (held vertically) behind the plate from left to right. This should help to ease the sticky stuff off without having to resort to knives.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Chaps. I particularly like the fishing line idea. The wife will assume I have descended further into insanity as I sit in the garage flossing my Porsche... 8)

POST 9Original post

just changed mine recently, WD40 is great for getting the old glue off :thumb: TB

POST 10Original post

If its a real pig to get off, a couple of minutes with a hairdryer blowing up the back of it does the trick every time....and if the pads have stayed on the car, rather than the plate, they're super-sticky again thanks to the heat, all ready for the new one! Pete
