Suggestion

Worth getting a coolant leak test done though just to be sure it's not a head gasket, clean the gunk out and get an oil change.( Strangely enough condensation doesn't seem to be a problem in Saudi!)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Tell me this can happen...... Put some oil in and its all round the cap. Tell me my engine is fine... Firthy

POST 2Original post

Usually, the mayonaise is caused by condensation, especially in the winter months. Always wise to check the other symptoms though like water in the oil and oil in the coolant to look for head gasket problems. Fingers crossed.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No overheating, also running like a dream. Was a lot of sludge around the lid though, I should maybe get it checked out. What tips for looking in the water do you suggest, can you smell it? Or does it feel oily? Does warranty cover the head gasket? Regards, Firthy

POST 4Original post

Hi Firthy - seen lots of threads on this symptom - and yes mayo in the oil filler tube/ cap is quite normal. - Simon

POST 5Original post

Neil, I understand the turbo engine is made of sterner stuff than the standard carrera engine and failures of the head gasket are fairly rare. Sounds like condensation from doing short journeys rathyer than anything catstrophic (and if you want me to drive it for 10,000 miles to check that out then just let me know, i'm willing to do you that favour ) might be worth clearing the existing sludge and keeping an eye on how soon and how much comes back? Tim

POST 6Original post

I agree with Tim, chances are it's using it for short journeys and not giving the engine a chance to fully warm up and dry off the condensation. Worth getting a coolant leak test done though just to be sure it's not a head gasket, clean the gunk out and get an oil change.( Strangely enough condensation doesn't seem to be a problem in Saudi!) Max

POST 7Original post

I put some oil in a couple of days ago and was alarmed at the mayo substance around the filler area. Thanks for putting my mind at rest. Should one clean it up though or is it harmless?

POST 8Original post

Best to clean it off Jamie - that bit isn't going to work properly as oil any more.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A relief to hear that, I don't do short runs though, it gets run 60 miles a day at present, may alter a little now I have the new BMW though. Besides if there is a long way round I do tend to go that way! Regards, Neil

POST 10Original post

Are you doing a lot of short trips, as it sounds like you are if everything mechanical is okay. Go for a good spirited run somewhere.

POST 11Original post

If it puts your mind at rest anymore, I've had a little bit of this stuff around the oil filler since I got the car a year ago. I'd read elsewhere it was fairly normal so wasn't too concerned. It's just been in for a major service at the OPC and nothing was said - indeed since the oil change at the service there seems to be more around the filler if anything. As I wasn't hit with a huge bill/warranty claim during the service, I'm happy it's just another of those special 911 characteristics!
