Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi looking for some advice... hunted around and couldn't get an answer 1999 996 40K miles. Original Becker stereo. Most bizarre thing. While at idle or driving and no AC or headlights on, the voltmeter reads 14V and the radio will not turn on. If I put the AC and/or the headlights on, drops to maybe 13.5 and the radio turns on no problem. Ignition/key switch is orginal but shows no signs of mechanical problem. Replaced a bad headlight switch a while ago and the problem was present both before and after. I wonder if the radio senses 14V and protects itself, and when I turn on other accessories the V drop is enough to allow it to power on. Then again, I read that 14V is the upper limit of normal for operating V when the car is running. Ideas? Voltage regulator ?

POST 2Original post

I don't have the answers to your questions, but you might want to call Becker Autosond ( www.beckerautosound.com ) in New Jersey. They might be able to help.

POST 3Original post

I'll second Becker Auto Sound, great people. I had a similar issue with the CDR220 in my 996 and the issue per BAS is the internal voltage sensor can go bad. Buy a refurbed one from them and you get a decent credit on your return. While you are at it, they also sell a Bluetooth module that is a very simple install and works very well.
