Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The 3.8 "S" vibration damper is good for street/track cars that have removed the dual mass flywheel and have installed a light weight single mass flywheel that has no vibration absorption at all...

Also, don't forget to let the loctite on the tensioner roller bolt cure before attempting to replace the belt.

Suggestion
It will also fit on a 3.4 or 3.6 and I have recommended it for those who run a single mass flywheel but I don't think the word gets around....
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'll play the devils advocate here...
Not knowing the history behind this, couple of off the wall thoughts....
Could be the pulley just fell apart like that and thats the end results, belt never fell off...???
Or, a scary thought, but maybe the tech responsible for this didn't realize the pulley was even damaged and thought it was good to go. We do have some exceptionally special techs out there.
Another reason to 86 those plastic idler pulleys. You are going to want a new belt as well. I ditched the plastic pulley when its surface got crenellated after a couple thousand miles. I replaced it with a billet version made in the USA so no tariff! See comparison below.
Does the OP (or anyone else) know what's up the crankshaft pulley? It looks like it has some kind of harmonic/vibration dampener on it which I've never seen before. A Tip thing maybe?
Definitely looks heavy compared to my stock one.... I think Slakker racing were saying that an underdrive pulley was a good add on for the 996! A bit more power
The 997.1 3.8 "S" engine have that vibration damper on them ...

I don't want ANY underdrive pulley on my street/track car...it slows down the alternator, water pump, A/C Compressor, things I like on the street/traffic, yea it saves a little HP and is good for cars that run at 4-7K RPM all day long...

I got this Pelican pulley kit a couple years ago for $150. Its all metal rollers with *** bearings iirr...

Just make sure to take it slow and easy with that lower idle roller when removing it. Also, don't forget to let the loctite on the tensioner roller bolt cure before attempting to replace the belt. If the bolt spins, you'll be hard pressed to get full tension. Some guys have welded the bolt to the bracket on the tensioner to prevent this.
They seem to be +/- about double the cost of plastic.
I found the 3 of them ~$100 cheaper 'on sale' at AutohausAZ. Ordered yesterday and they got here today. Seem to be well made.
