Hey guys. I buy all of my 2004 996 parts from Pelican but I have never visited the forums. Does anybody have an idea of why the computer cannot read the catalyst. This is after I had my sparkplugs changed and an oxygen sensor replaced. Now the code reader is saying it cant read the catalyst, therefore I am not going to be able to get it smogged. I have driven it over 300 miles after the work was done so it should have picked it up by now. Before I go to war with the mechanic I was hoping to get some insight. I really appreciate it. Rob

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

No diagnostic tool "reads" the actual catalyst; rather they infer what the cat is doing by looking at the before and after cat O2 sensor voltages. As you have changed an O2 sensor, I would start by looking at the O2 sensor harness and make sure you have good connections.
The truth is they told me they fixed it and got it smoged. When I checked the other day, a year and a half later, its not picking up the cat. So they must have got it smoged illegally at the place next door and my dumb a$$ just took their word for it. So aggravating but after almost two years what the heck am I going to do? I'm just going to take it somewhere else. I have not been putting many miles on it so that's good. I'm sure with no cat reading the fuel mixture is not good! I'm going to try Westwerk in Downey. Has anyone in SoCal used them?

That's the thing. There are no codes it's just the computer is not picking up the catalyst info. It has to be running rich I would think but there are no codes. It runs great but I don't put that many miles on it. I have a feeling if the shop knew what they were doing it could have been fixed easily. Their Yelp reviews have to be bogus. According to Yelp they are the greatest thing since sliced bread.
