Suggestion

I note your thinking on concerns re the face of the exhaust port flange, which do not seem unreasonable, and it is a real pain that to risk even an attempt tightening up on a manifold flange, that it is almost guaranteed that the fixing seems likely to shear, which then would necessitate a strip down and repair process well known to the more practical hands-on Porsche community from the 996 onward.

There is/was a very practical type who made YT vids of his many repair and maintenance tasks carried out on his 997 and showed a step by step process of replacing his exhaust system and sheared studs making use of the Stomsky kit.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just wondering if any of you have someone you would recommend to replace my exhaust manifold fixings? just cant find the time to do it myself... and getting old and lazy. Oh, I`m in Scotland but wouldnt mind a certain amount of travel.

POST 2Original post

If you don't have an actually exhaust leak then i would advise leaving them alone .. whilst they look badly corroded they will last many years yet i feel .

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

there isnt one i can hear yet but small signs of soot at one corner. I`m just worried of damage/pitting to head. Thanks.... cant believe how rusty our cars look underneath compared with other countries.

POST 4Original post

Unfortunately manifold corrosion is something i see every day along with the odd black patch .. they do go on like this for many years if not longer though . The fix is of course removal .. many snapped bolts and a drill out job .. you need to find a garage that is capable of this or diy if your that way inclined .. i know i'm not .. my colleague does these .. he enjoys it .. i'd rather set fire to my pants than drill these out !!!! Hartech have posted images in the past of garages attempting this job .. hence be careful who does the job . I have no recommendations im afraid in your area .. i don't have many in my own to be honest !

POST 5Original post

Kenny, I suspect practical Porsche related advice does not come more valued than from deMort on this forum. I take it you are well aware of the processes involved and the existence of the Stomsky Jig... I can also well understand that some of us for whatever reason might prefer not to take the task on, myself included these days, though there will be some skilled engineers out there in your area who may be happy to give it a go, even if you supply the jig and components. I guess in Central Scotland there are a few Independent Porsche specialists (Indy`s) who will already have a jig and thus should be more experienced in the requirements and realities of the task than the "average" mechanic.. The name George Morrison in Rutherglen comes to mind as perhaps being the closest to you..? Hard to beat experience..? There is/was a very practical type who made YT vids of his many repair and maintenance tasks carried out on his 997 and showed a step by step process of replacing his exhaust system and sheared studs making use of the Stomsky kit. I tried but could only now find no 2 in the series of vids which does not even show the jig, whether the rest of this series have been taken down or not...??? Though if you watch the vid you will get an idea of how valuable or not his vids might be to you..? https://youtu.be/0RB1pG1ixQA deMort if you are looking in, I am interested to know what the official Porsche approved method might be for resolving broken exhaust fixings given it seems possible that the OPC network resolution to broken bleed nipples on brake callipers seem to be replacement of the caliper.... To possibly apply any similar method to exhaust manifold / cylinder head fixings is a tad scary, or do Porsche have their own jig as a special tool along the same lines if not identical to the Stormky kit.. :?:

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thank you all for the responses. I might give George a call. I have heard a few mixed reviews about him. Although clever a few have mentioned there always seems to be extras not quoted for.

POST 11Original post

I guess, there will ever be a mix of reports on many businesses who service/repair Porsches, just as there will be a mix of customers who may be penny pinchers by nature or happy to pay whatever it costs to have their car repaired.. I` m afraid I am of no help as I ever did my own work on my Porsches in the first decade or so when I owned air cooled, and heard of Geo Morrison for the first time back then, that was a long time ago, I guess by now he may no longer be active in the business.. ? I suspect it may be less than wise and no doubt expensive to ignore the words of deMort given he is the voice of real hands-on experience on this forum, in that this job you plan may not need to be done right now..? Though I can understand where you are coming from as I prefer to avoid nasty surprises when out on the road. I have worked on my own old sports cars of numerous marques over many years and when it comes down to corroded fixings the potential variables in time and cost in replacing them can be very difficult to estimate, as even the component(s) that the fixings hold together can be damaged beyond repair in the process of removal which can add considerably to the overall repair cost and well beyond the cost of a new fixing...! At least having watched the vids you now know what is involved in the process and it is down to luck as to how many fixings might shear off and to what extent they break, which then can demand different methods/tools to proceed with removal, thus I suspect the best you might get is a guestimate from anyone to carry out the work, and my guess is that Morrisons may be no stranger to that task...? I guess you could ask for a worst case estimate to prepare yourself or to make the decision on whether it is worth doing or not..? Good luck in the decision making process Kenny. :thumb:
