If no mechanical symptoms to speak of, then maybe check the ground and power to the TCM module, the wiring harness to the extent you can inspect what is external.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've taken it out and sent it back twice, and the rebuilder sent me a different valve body after the second try didn't work.
This transmission has been rebuilt less than 100 miles ago. I've taken it out and sent it back twice, and the rebuilder sent me a different valve body after the second try didn't work. The new valve body is better in that I can drive normally for 5-10 minutes, depending on ambient temperature. But, it always goes into limp mode at some point. I'm sending this same data to the rebuilder, but hoping somebody might have some kind words of wisdom other than a cliff and a 2x4 on the pedal.
Collecting all the data has been a challenge. Some tools will save some of the data, and some will save more but then there's no way to share the data or graph.
Extended Fault Data
The PDF shows what I think is the relevant data from the Porsche PIWIS 3 Diagnostic tester. There were 55 pages of repeating data, likely because I tried to save it a number of times before I figured out the magic. So, I attempted to trim it down to a few cases for a given error code.
The Front Right and Front Left wheel sensor codes are interesting because they both seem to be going the same speed. So, they may be false flags pointing to another one of the issues.
The 5th gear monitor shows what is happening before it goes into limp mode from 5th.
The torque converter clutch solenoid error didn't show up as much as the other ones, but seems to correlate with the 5th gear monitor (it mentions 5th). I've seen limp mode in 2nd and 3rd for sure. Not sure about 4th, but maybe.
I'm not sure what to make out of the last page.
Data Chart
I attempted to take the data from one run and put it on an Excel sheet. I then annotated what I thought was happening.
I can't be sure of what of the fault data correlates to this data, and there's no way to save selected or commanded gear.
Video
It's too big to email, so here's a link:
Porsche Video 1.mp4
The video shows about 9 minutes of the gauges while driving. Unfortunately, I didn't have an empty road to keep things more steady in terms of acceleration, braking, etc.
The first instance of limp mode occurs at around 8 minutes into the video.
This video does NOT match the chart, That's a different data set which I could plot out if it helps. It took me a while to make sense of the first data set, so I wanted to get what I had out there first.
Sorry to read about your struggles here. I looked up all the codes and they all seem to point to a few possibilities that are common for each code:
possible damage to the trans wiring harness; possible sensor malfunction on the input / turbine sensor; possibly low fluid or bad fluid; possible solenoid malfunction.
Several of the codes include possible causes that might make sense given trans was removed and re installed: bad ground connection, loose or contaminated wiring connection, a nick or a cut on the wiring for the solenoid(s), low fluid or bad fluid
Do you notice any mechanical symptoms like grinding or clunking or whirring or whining? If no mechanical symptoms to speak of, then maybe check the ground and power to the TCM module, the wiring harness to the extent you can inspect what is external.
Has the fluid level been checked (engine has to be warm and running to check or else it is a mess). I would check all the grounds and wiring first.
Do you have a warranty and can the rebuilder assist?

Faulty Input/Turbine Speed Sensor:
The sensor itself has failed due to heat, age, or internal electronic failure.
Damaged Wiring Harness/Connectors:
The wiring harness is susceptible to heat and damage, causing open circuits or corrosion in the multipin connector on the transmission.
Contaminated/Low Transmission Fluid:
Metallic shavings (from worn internal components) can accumulate on the magnetic tip of the sensor, causing it to fail to read the input speed, or the fluid level is too low for the sensor to work.
Valve Body/Internal Issues:
In some cases, the issue lies within the solenoid/sensor assembly on the valve body.
P0740
Faulty Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid:
The solenoid responsible for locking the converter is malfunctioning.
Low or Contaminated Fluid:
Low transmission fluid level or poor quality fluid.
Wiring Issues:
Corroded, broken, or shorted wiring in the TCC circuit.
Bad Torque Converter:
Internal failure of the converter lock-up mechanism.

Clogged fluid passages or a faulty valve body
P0735
Low Transmission Fluid:
The most common cause, leading to slippage or insufficient pressure for 5th gear engagement.
Valve Body/Solenoid Failure:
A faulty solenoid or clogged valve body (often due to contaminated fluid) can prevent the gearbox from shifting into 5th.
TCM Issue:
The Transmission Control Module may be faulty or not receiving proper voltage.
Wiring/Connector Issues:
Corroded or damaged wiring harnesses near the transmission can cause signal issues.
P1715
Voltage Issues:
A weak battery or recent jump-start is the most common cause of this code in the 996, often generating false codes.
Transmission Fluid Level/Quality:
Low or burnt transmission fluid can cause the sensor to read incorrectly.
Wiring/Connector Issues:
Corroded, broken, or oil-soaked wiring harnesses at the transmission connector.
Faulty Speed Sensor/Conductor Plate:
Failure of the sensor itself, which is located on the valve body inside the gearbox
P1710
Failed Speed Sensor:
The turbine speed sensor (#2) inside the transmission has failed.
Voltage Issues:
Weak battery or alternator issues causing low voltage, common after a jump start.
Wiring/Connector Issues:
Damaged wiring harness, oil contamination, or corroded connectors, often appearing on older models.
Transmission Control Module (TCM):
Internal ground issue within the TCM
First, thank you VERY MUCH for the detailed response!!!!
Do you notice any mechanical symptoms like grinding or clunking or whirring or whining?
--> It only clunks when it goes into Limp mode. It drives fine until then.
If no mechanical symptoms to speak of, then maybe check the ground and power to the TCM module, the wiring harness to the extent you can inspect what is external.
--> I have the back seat and carpet out and have inspected all the wiring that I can reach. I also tested the harness thats inside of the transmission. I havent looked hard at the wires from the connector to/through the floor of the car. I will try removing the negative battery terminal from the chassis, cleaning, and reconnecting. Its weird that it changes with temperature.
Has the fluid level been checked (engine has to be warm and running to check or else it is a mess). I would check all the grounds and wiring first.
--> Checked, driven, rechecked, driven, rechecked. Im using one of several different scanners to read the temperature and am doing it when running. I had to add a little fluid the last time after driving it. Pentosin ATF-5 which Pentosin says supercedes Pentosin ATF-1, and which Pelican Parts lists as valid for this car.
Do you have a warranty and can the rebuilder assist?
--> The rebuilder is trying to assist but hes stumped. No shops in this areas would take it out and send it off to be rebuilt. So, Ive taken it out 2 times already. Its not my favorite activity. Hes working with me to analyze the data. But, Im hoping for that miracle insight!

Faulty Input/Turbine Speed Sensor:
The sensor itself has failed due to heat, age, or internal electronic failure.
--> Its new, but measured the same as the old one when I installed it in terms of impedance and response to a steel object waved across it. The old one had the same error.

Damaged Wiring Harness/Connectors:
The wiring harness is susceptible to heat and damage, causing open circuits or corrosion in the multipin connector on the transmission.
--> Its possible that the harness is damaged between the unit and the floor of the car. It looks fine above that. The multipin connector looks clean.

Contaminated/Low Transmission Fluid:
Metallic shavings (from worn internal components) can accumulate on the magnetic tip of the sensor, causing it to fail to read the input speed, or the fluid level is too low for the sensor to work.
--> When I checked the fluid last, the oil looked good.

Valve Body/Internal Issues:
In some cases, the issue lies within the solenoid/sensor assembly on the valve body.
--> Possible. The rebuilder rebuilt the valve body, and then I had weird issues like 1st and Reverse seemingly needing lots of pedal. He got a newly rebuilt one and it works much better but still limps.
P0740

Faulty Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid:
The solenoid responsible for locking the converter is malfunctioning.
--> Possible
.

Low or Contaminated Fluid:
Low transmission fluid level or poor quality fluid.
--> Doubtful.

Wiring Issues:
Corroded, broken, or shorted wiring in the TCC circuit.
--> Possible

Bad Torque Converter:
Internal failure of the converter lock-up mechanism.
--> Possible, but Id like to figure out how to prove that with the data

Valve Body Issues:
Clogged fluid passages or a faulty valve body
--> Possible, but recently rebuilt. I wont rule that out but would like to prove it in data somehow.
P0735

Low Transmission Fluid:
The most common cause, leading to slippage or insufficient pressure for 5th gear engagement.
--> Doubtful.

Valve Body/Solenoid Failure:
A faulty solenoid or clogged valve body (often due to contaminated fluid) can prevent the gearbox from shifting into 5th.
--> Possible, but recently rebuilt. I wont rule that out but would like to prove it in data somehow.

TCM Issue:
The Transmission Control Module may be faulty or not receiving proper voltage.
--> Possible. I can measure the voltage, and the impedance to ground of the ground it has.

Wiring/Connector Issues:
Corroded or damaged wiring harnesses near the transmission can cause signal issues.
--> Possible
P1715

Voltage Issues:
A weak battery or recent jump-start is the most common cause of this code in the 996, often generating false codes.
--> The battery is new. I lost one because my trickle charger came off. I fixed that though!

Transmission Fluid Level/Quality:
Low or burnt transmission fluid can cause the sensor to read incorrectly.
--> Doubtful.

Wiring/Connector Issues:
Corroded, broken, or oil-soaked wiring harnesses at the transmission connector.
--> Possible

Faulty Speed Sensor/Conductor Plate:
Failure of the sensor itself, which is located on the valve body inside the gearbox
--> Its new, and uses a harness, not a plate.
P1710

Failed Speed Sensor:
The turbine speed sensor (#2) inside the transmission has failed.
--> Its new, so doubtful but possible.

Voltage Issues:
Weak battery or alternator issues causing low voltage, common after a jump start.
--> The battery is new but that doesnt rule out the voltage being off at the TCM.

Wiring/Connector Issues:
Damaged wiring harness, oil contamination, or corroded connectors, often appearing on older models.
--> Possible

Transmission Control Module (TCM):
Internal ground issue within the TCM
--> Possible. I thought about cracking it open and checking out the capacitors. The ones in cans (electrolytic) do wear out. The effect is a slow reduction in capacitance.
Thank you again for your thoughts! Have you has similar issues or seen them with somebody else's car?
Hey, I did a Google search on solenoid testing, and here is a link that may let you test each solenoid on the zf5hp19 without removing it.
One thing I did notice in this info was they mention that resistance does change with heat. So, maybe you have some electrical related issue and as the temp rises, resistance is increasing, and then you have a fault. I dunno. But it may be worth considering.
I am hopeful you can test the solenoid operation (if you deem it necessary) and either isolate or eliminate these as a potential root cause (unless someone else pipe in with more insight and experience).

I do not have a ton of zf tiptronic eperience, though I do have one in my 996, too. When I bought it, I noticed a slight whining/whirring sound and so I had to educate myself enough to resolve the issues. I found it had perhaps incorrect (red) fluid in it and it was a little low, so flushed and filled with Pentosin (Amber/Gold), new filter, and the correct level and now it is running well. No experience having to resolve electrical or valve body issues yet.
