Going to replace the cup holder on my 2002 996 cab is this a difficult job involving taking out the sat nav and radio.

FWIW I was able to remove mine fairly easily while replacing the stereo & tinkering with dab aerials, but I did remove the whole surrounding frame at the time.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's been a while since I did it during my stereo installation, but as far as I recall, I think you can do it without removing the radio/nav unit.
You need to unclip & remove the horse shoe trim that surrounds the stereo, then slide out the air vent piece which lies above the cup holder. There are some retaining clips at the top of this which can break easily so be careful with those.
Then you should have access to remove the cup holder. You can find a diagram showing the clips for the cup holder here:
From this thread:

I've recently had everything out of the centre dashboard and I could be wrong but I couldn't see any easy way of removing the cupholder unit from the frame even when I had the whole frame out. I guess there must be a way but it wasn't obvious with clips/tabs/screws etc....
This doesn't show the whole process, but covers removal of the horse shoe & air vents. It should give you an idea of how easy the remaining steps will be:

The cup holder removal isn't shown, but it will slide out from the surrounding frame by releasing the clips on the upper side as shown in the image from my previous reply.
For some reason I didn't/couldn't see the diagram when I first replied - apologies.
The tabs to release the cup holder look pretty obvious in the picture though and I'm sure I would've noticed these, I wonder therefore if perhaps I just have a different design of cupholder as I looked and looked and couldn't see how to remove mine from the frame.
Hopefully you will have better luck!
