Suggestion

+1 for jubilee clips, it's obviously not a recommended Porsche fix but if its only crimps & not hoses is a much cheaper option....

Their opinion on looking is that if it was the feed then it would be a bigger issue, but the low pressure return line in this case is not so.

Suggestion · Original poster

Thanks for the comments, I did the jubilee clip fix as a safety measure, looks to be a major strip out job to change the pipe so it will have to stay like it for a while.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Jubilee clip round it and not too tight worked for me and still holding on after 5 years.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone replaced the steering rack return pipe (item 2 on PET steering page), the first pipe from the rack. Looks like I need to drop out the front subframe to get clear access. Only asking as aluminium crimp clamp has started to split. From looking around various forum it sounds like it is a common failure as cars get older. I was intending doing the job myself so any ideas or solutions would be appreciated, like to think it was fixable at home rather than OPC / Indi

POST 2Original post

Jubilee clip around the split crimp is a common fix.

POST 6Original post

Yup OPC quote for a new rack with this job and a lot of labor, I think it's around 1.8k all in. I took it to a local place that recon power steering and other high pressure systems. Their opinion on looking is that if it was the feed then it would be a bigger issue, but the low pressure return line in this case is not so. End result? JB weld the small crack and two strong clips, job done and forgotten about in the years that followed and no problems. Cheers,
