996 C2 just uses a rod with a float attached to a potentiometer , so im not sure how you can get an airlock ?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I ran the fuel in my C2 a bit low (fumes) and when I filled it up it didn't go back up to full. It is probably about half full on the gauge. I'm sure there is thread about this, but I couldn't find it. Any ideas?

POST 2Original post

Assumeing you filled it to full then the sender has stuck .. maybe drive over a few potholes it might free off .. but i think you will need the sender checking as it may have fouled on the pump pipes and got stuck.

POST 3Original post

Did you fill it up or just chuck 20 quid in it?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Filled it, but it only took £40, so might have another try at filling it.

POST 5Original post

That's sufficient to register the quantity. If you put small amount in, owing to the shape of the tank, it doesn't reach the sender. That's not the case with filling it in your case.

POST 6Original post

You are probably thinking of the AWD fuel tank. This issue is probably fuel capillary airlock in the sender. If the fuel drops below the bottom of the gauge capillary, you get airlocks (and measurement). Fortunately, overnight park-up or continued use will clear it.

POST 7Original post

Yes I was thinking of AWD with the saddle tank. Thanks for the clarification. I think there must be many 996 Turbo owners who have had the initiation ob a petrol forecourt. I experienced it, so worried, I rang Mike at Sports & Classic and he put me right and told me not to put teaspoons of petrol into the turbo!

POST 8Original post

Could i humbly ask a question as im a little confused ... fuel capillary airlock .. that would be in an enclosed float lvl sender or a system where by fuel raises through a pipe to operate a rod / potentiometer .. 996 C2 just uses a rod with a float attached to a potentiometer , so im not sure how you can get an airlock ? Ive seen them get stuck on the pump pipes and will register only half full when actually full but dont understand this . If i dont ask ill never know

POST 9Original post

I'm stuck with a similar problem after filling up from 3/4 empty (£100 at current prices). The car's a 996.2 C2 and the fuel gauge is still sat at 1/4 tank after driving it home 15mins. Any ideas?

POST 10Original post

I have a similar problem. Full tank only shows as three quarters full on the gauge.

POST 11Original post

Any ideas on my fuel problem. ? Filled it up full a couple of tmis now. Still reading three quarters full. :?:

POST 12Original post

I suggest tapping the instrument cluster, it won't do anything but it has proved therapeutic for me until I find a solution to my same problem. My 996.2 goes in for a service in a month so i will ask them to look into it and share whatever findings come from it.

POST 13Original post

Basic rule of thumb here .. If the car has a saddle tank .. turbos , C4 then there is a calibration routine that needs doing with an incorrect or replaced sender unit. This is because the saddles are lower than the fuel lvl sender can see and the car calculates the amount left using various parameters . If on any car there has been work done on the fuel tank .. sender or fuel pump removed or replaced you have the possibility of the sender rod and float catching on a pipe from the pump .. Basically the pump is on the bottom of the fuel tank with the sender above it .. the pipes and wiring from the pump go upwards to the sender unit .. it can snag on refitting .. you can't see if it does this when fitting .. bit of a pain but it can happen . If suddenly the gauge is incorrect .. this could be a fault with the sender unit or the instrument cluster .. i don't think there is any calibration for a non saddle tank but there might be .. either way its an investigation and a check of sender resistance .

POST 14Original post

I went out to my car today and it had miraculously healed itself (996.2 C2). I'm now a believer in the self healing 996.
