Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Straight after changing the fluid it went completely, then within a minute at idle it returned, though much quieter than before.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My power steering pump has developed a loud whine after a small road trip. I've flushed through and changed the fluid. It's definitely better, but now I'm not sure how quiet it was and whether it's normal to hear a bit of a whine?
It's most noticeable at low speeds. Straight after changing the fluid it went completely, then within a minute at idle it returned, though much quieter than before.
Either air getting into system? If so, where from? ( There is zero fluid loss)
Or pump knackard?
What do we reckon?
Thanks
Thanks, yep in lieu of not receiving any other replies, I figured no one else has had this problem and came to the same conclusion.
I bought a second hand pump from eBay. It has apparently come from a Boxster 986 of a similar vintage to my 996 (Year 2000) with 46K miles on it.
I did the swap myself. Not too griefy as the Air Con compressor is already removed. Some simple "extra" tools made the job easier. I've posted pictures below for anyone else undertaking this job, and edited the title of the thread....
The turkey baster makes extracting the old fluid easier. Though if you have a large syringe with a 15cm of windscreen washer pipe on the end, you'll probably get more of the fluid out. The turkey baster was only marginally successful as there was still a quantity left in the reservoir.
You need to be able to extract the return pipe from the back of the reservoir. Porsche specify a "special tool" which allows you to press down (or toward the reservoir) the red locking ring, as you pull the return pipe away. If you don't compress the red ring, it simply grips tight onto the pipe, stopping it being removed.
I made my own after seeing another post on Rennlist or Renntech. Its a car trim removal tool (set of four bought from eBay for £2.39) I have then cut and filed the end to be able to slot snugly over the pipe and apply pressure to the red locking ring.

For the record, my pump was shot! New one is much smoother........ but still whines just a little bit at low speeds, which is how I think I remember it should be
