A fluid fill would work for maybe 1 or 2 at most cycles till you see fluid on the floor in front of wheels and top is stuck in half open position.

I'm in the process of selling my 2002 996 (manual, black/black) and while giving test drives the top decides to stop opening.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm in the process of selling my 2002 996 (manual, black/black) and while giving test drives the top decides to stop opening. Motor is humming and at first it would only open halfway, now barely at all. Feels like a hydraulic issue? I've stopped cycling it for fear of causing a mis-alignment. But how serious of an issue is this likely to be? Trying to decide if I should drop the price and sell as-is, or get it fixed. Update! Topped hydraulic fluid up and now working perfectly.

POST 2Original post

If it was working before and you did not "fix" anything, then it is likely low on fluid.

POST 3Original post

Meaning your hydraulic cylinders are leaking; One easy way to check is to remove the rear speakers so you can do a visual of the cylinders and see if oily.

POST 4Original post

The top on my 02 Cab started doing that and it was relatively straightforward to top off the hydraulic fluid and its working fine again. Its available at any normal auto parts store. Now that someone mentioned pulling the rear speakers and looking at the cylinders Im going to do that but Im also not exceptionally worried about it. I only put the top up if Im washing the car or if I were to ever be caught by unexpected rain. I would say top it off and be upfront with potential buyers about it. Maybe you have a buyer like me who basically never use the top and its not a big deal to occasionally top it off.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's exactly what it was. Took it to the Mechanic this morning he topped the hydraulics up and now working better than ever. Thanks!

Just so you know, your top working again is probably very short lived. I'd be surprised if it opens and close a half dozen times till its out of fluid again maybe a lot less. Problem is, its very common for 996 top hydraulic rams once the rams start to leak, its a very fast progression to a ripped or broke seal that might work the top 1 or 2 times with a fluid fill... So what I''m saying is, when the top hydraulic system gets low and needs to be filled to work, there is a leak, it doesn't just get low like engine oil level. If its low, there is most certainly a leak. And most times its a big one. Out of the 6 rams I've rebuilt, all went from no leak working good, to a massive leak immediately. A fluid fill would work for maybe 1 or 2 at most cycles till you see fluid on the floor in front of wheels and top is stuck in half open position. Just don't want anyone to think filling the fluid and its fixed now, its not. And then get stuck in a rain storm with top not closing...
