Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi folks. Got a few questions for whoever is out there. Hope y'all had a good Mother's day. Here we go. 1. A story and a question. I had my transmission on the ground, admittedly it was precariously supported by two jack stands. My wife was holding the hydraulic cart with the engine on it; I was about to shift the engine position a bit. I said "now hold on lets move out of the way a bit so we don't knock the transmission over" . As I said the word "over" she move the cart a little and... tipped over the transmission. It was only 10-12" off the ground. I am assuming it will be ok. Is there anything I can do to check? 2. 2nd question about the transmission - see photos at the end. There was moisture where the transmission bell cover mated to the engine, and a bunch of black soot on the inside of the bell cover at the same spot. What do you think that's all about? 3. I've got the engine strapped to a hydraulic cart. The intent was to to move it to an engine stand. Anyone here done that? you can't roll the engine stand under the cart... how do people do that? @n559br - I think I saw a post where you did this? How? 4. I was thinking I'd need to remove the flywheel (I already removed the pressure plate and clutch disc). but those bolts are impossible? I gave up. What are the torque settings for those? Hmm. I think that's it actually. I guess just four questions. Here are the pics transmission dampness from outside Transmission before it tipped over (do not do this, duh) and how do I get this engine up on a stand? Transmission from the inside

POST 2Original post

I'm guessing the answer to question #2 is leak from rear main seal leading to dampness inside of bell housing (inertia), which then accumulated road grime creating a nice solid. To be sure you'll need to remove the clutch bits and inspect the RMS/IMS for the common seal failures.

POST 3Original post

I've gotten my engine from cart to engine stand two ways. One way was to build a scaffold under the engine by adding 4*4 under each side one at a time until it was high enough to mate to the stand. Probably dangerous and not safe, but it worked. Other way is to use a crane or a hoist. I've used both. But my experience was with an air cooled 3.2, not with my water cooled 3.4... I have a folding crane that fits into the trailer hitch receiver on my truck, and it swivels and lifts. A hoist bolted to the ceiling of your garage (needs to be a secure and reinforced or engineered mounting point to hold hundreds of lbs.). It weighs around 450 lbs. You will likely be more comfortable doing any of this with a few healthy and strong friends to ensure safety.

What are you doing to the engine, whats the goal here..?

POST 5Original post

My redneck way of getting the engine on a stand... Find a solid point on your garage roof, attach some ropes or straps to it. Lift the engine as high as needed with the cart, attach it to the ropes, remove cart and insert engine mount, then remove ropes/straps.

POST 6Original post

Unless you have a need to pull the oil pan, I always leave the engine on the cart, I also modified the cart handle so it could be out of the way when working on the front of the engine.

POST 7Original post

I have to tell you that your practices are very precarious. Please be safe, and at the very least buy some steel toe boots ... for your wife. When working with engine and transmission, I use one of two things: 1) An engine crane. Lift the piece up, mount it to the engine mount. A folding crane can be pushed out of the way and it does not take more than a couple of square feet of space. 2) Or, I strap the engine or gearbox via chains and loop it around my four-post lift and use that lift like a crane to lift the engine off the ground. Then move the engine mount to accept the engine and then take it off the lift. When mating engine and gearbox together, I put the engine on a rolling platform 24x36 inch (plywood and casters). Put the gearbox on a smaller dolly and move them into positions. Then use two jacks to adjust the gearbox angle to mate to the engine and push it home. And I can do this by myself but I find it safer to get help from a willing neighbor. Almost never my wife.

POST 8Original post

Get an engine stand with a U shaped wheel base so it fits around the hydraulic lift table (this is what I did) it worked well!
