Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

However, I had the exhaust checked over by a local Indy and was told that the version fitted on my car is not capable of having the switch retro-fitted.
Leading evidence: 'Check over by a local indy and was told' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'grey/pink wire' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check over by a local indy and was told' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You can get a pair of silencers with the pipes fitted for about £400 on eBay (search: Porsche sport sound) but you will have the same problem as Paul with track days.

Factory fitted PSE on my '54' C4S cab with a doctored speed relay so I don't lose the sound at any revs

I did this on mine a few times before I fitted the switch.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Suggestion
I don.t have the sports exhaust on my car, but it seems that I am missing out on some aural delights, can anyone one recommend a retro fit system which includes the swtiching etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Porsche factory fit sports exhaust (on a 2002MY Carrera 2). It sounds fantastic. However, it's not switchable and pumps out 103db at 5000rpm so limits somewhat the track days I can attend. It was on the car when I bought it being part of the original spec, but if I had a choice I'd get the switchable version (although I'm not sure whether or not the valve would open automatically by the time you got to 5000rpm anyway so it might defeat the object of having it switchable). Anyway, if you don't do track days no worries just a big grin.
Default mode is loud, so you can switch it to quiet for track days. You could always get the switch and controls retrofitted (About £160 for the parts) but it takes quite a while (probably 2-3 hours) to wire it all up.
I had the Oettle-style bypass pipes on my exhausts, and it sounded great. You can get a pair of silencers with the pipes fitted for about £400 on eBay (search: Porsche sport sound) but you will have the same problem as Paul with track days.
Hi Richard, you very kindly gave me the tip (and pointed me in the direction of the technical info and parts numbers needed) of getting the switch retro-fitted in the past. However, I had the exhaust checked over by a local Indy and was told that the version fitted on my car is not capable of having the switch retro-fitted. apparently there are 2 types, those that can and those that can't (a bit like people really). I have heard tell of some baffle you can shove up the exhaust pipe. Would you, or anyone, know anything about that? P.
Ooops! Just noticed from your avatar that yo have a pre-facelift 2002. The "Mk1" PSE was a speed controlled system, not fitted with a switch.
One way of making it quiet all the time might be to disable the speed signal to the relay. This is most probably a grey/pink wire. Alternatively, you could bypass the electric switchover valve with a piece of tube, so that the actuator flaps on the exhaust have vacuum all the time.
I have the retrofitting instructions for the Mk1 PSE - email me if you would like the details. It shows the position of the switch-over valve, which looks easy to get at.

You can get a kit to retrofit the switch to the pre facelift pse's here at Carnewal...

Alternatively, if you need it quiet for a trackday and your arms are skinny enough, it possible to make a loop from a cable tie and put it over the arm that closes the valves on each muffler. I did this on mine a few times before I fitted the switch.

Mine has a right mixture. Originally had the switchable PSE fitted then I added large diameter gas flowed equal lenght headers, 100 cell cats & large oval tips. Midrange is amazing and sounds like a mad beast, passed the MOT 2 weeks ago well within emissions too.

[8D] Hi Guys
I don.t have the sports exhaust on my car, but it seems that I am missing out on some aural delights, can anyone one recommend a retro fit system which includes the swtiching etc. for Carrra 2 2002 facelft?
I fitted the Oettles myself and they are fab. Sounds exactly like the PSE except it cost me £350. Got nice Dansk dual tips with the money saved and used new clamps so no headache removing anything. Took 1hr to fit both sides.
There are instructions here:
http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2470
Alternatively, just pull the grey/pink wire (speed signal) off the relay connector.
Oettles? Do you mean this >>

Oettle were the first ones that did it and sold them on the auction site. The link you gave is another company but both do exactly the same modification to used original boxes. If you wanted to do it on the cheap and your own silencers are in good order, get someone to weld the 1 inch diameter pipe for you. It sounds like the PSE and there is no boom at motorway speeds. It just sounds like the 996 should.
