Thanks, that makes sense and may explain why it wasn’t replaced when the clutch was done.

They also said they usually replace IMS bearings when needed, and the owner appeared to have approved the recommended service/repairs at that time.

Could a 996.1 3.4L M96/04 AT replacement engine have been supplied with the later larger non-serviceable IMS bearing, or was that only used on later 996.2 / 3.6 replacement engines?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently purchased an early 2000 996 Carrera, built in 1999, and Im working through the maintenance history.
While checking the engine number, I noticed it is stamped:
M96/04 AT 66Y66627
My understanding is that
AT
indicates an Austauschmotor / Porsche exchange engine. The car has 35+ service records, but I have not found any record showing when the engine was replaced.
In 2021, a previous owner had major service done at Autobahn Extremist in Ohio, including the clutch, flywheel, RMS, and other work. I called them to ask whether the IMS was addressed while the gearbox was out. They were able to look up the record and said the IMS was not replaced, but seems like it was not required. They also said they usually replace IMS bearings when needed, and the owner appeared to have approved the recommended service/repairs at that time.
My question is:
Could a 996.1 3.4L M96/04 AT replacement engine have been supplied with the later larger non-serviceable IMS bearing, or was that only used on later 996.2 / 3.6 replacement engines?
Im also curious whether anyone has seen an
M96/04 AT 66Y
replacement engine with a confirmed dual-row, single-row, or larger non-serviceable IMS bearing.
Thanks in advance.
All "AT" engines built and installed after
2006
had the large non-serviceable Bearing from the factory .....
All "AT" engines built and installed
from 2002 to 2005
had the small single row Bearing from the factory ...
All "AT" engines built and installed
up to 2000
had the dual row Bearing from the factory .....
Thanks, that makes sense and may explain why it wasn’t replaced when the clutch was done.
Has anyone had success reaching out to a Porsche dealership to find out when their engine was replaced? I’d be interested to know the actual mileage on my M96/04 AT engine, since the car’s mileage may not reflect the mileage on the replacement engine.
