When I started it the idling was a little erratic but it drove off ok.However a few miles down the road[on the way to a track day]the car suddenly lost power just like a rev limiter cutting in and after a few surges and stops it stopped completely. After about 15 minutes sitting there cursing and wondering what to do I got it to idle for a few seconds before it cut out. After several attempts it idled for long enough to get some heat into the engine compartment and with a few surges and hesitations I was able to drive off."check engine, drive to workshop"said the screen. So I duly obeyed but after about 45 minutes of faultless running I kept going to the track day[which I had paid for in advance

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After washing my car[996GT2]I usually go for a short run to warm the engine and blow off excess water before drying with a chamois.Usually there are a few squeaks and groans from the drive belt and occasionally a message about "alternator/battery" which goes away fairly quickly. The other day I washed it in the rain and so didn't bother with the run and dried it off in the shed.As it kept raining I didn't use the car for 4 days. So I duly obeyed but after about 45 minutes of faultless running I kept going to the track day[which I had paid for in advance]where it ran beautifully and there have been no signs of any further problems. Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem in a 996? It seems to me that it is moisture in something- but what? The wiring harnesses and connections are waterproof and are tucked away where the water can't reach. So maybe it is a sensor or something like that.I would appreciate any help as I'm afraid to wash it again prior to the next OPC visit which is a few weeks away.In any event I would like to fix it myself if I can.

POST 2Original post

I'd normally say that this sounds like a classic alternator problem, but I know nothing about Porsche engines to reliably comment. Did they try soaking the car to see if they could reproduce the fault and does it have similar problems if parked outside in the rain? I've had problems with my rear parking sensors after jet washing the car, so I generally rinse it to start off and then wash it by hand. Not sure if you jet wash your car, but it seems to get an awful lot of water in the engine area.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

GD Come to think of it the alternator gets a gutfull of water every time you wash it or it rains.Maybe that's why so many 996 owners are having alternator problems[see other recent posts].Ian

POST 5Original post

Are you using a hose to do the washing? Products like WD40 are great on electrical components to keep moisture away. Does the drive belt need adjusting or replacing too? Regards Big Bob

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

BigBob,I didn't use a hose this time,I just let the rain wash off the soapsuds.Drive belt is as new and correct tension.Have just sprayed everything that looks electrical with WD 40 but shoudn't have to really.
