Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have recently traded from a 2001 986 Boxster to a 1999 996 Cab tip. On the Boxster I was able to use a trickle charger plugged into the cigar lighter socket to keep the battery topped up when the car was garaged. On my 996 the ciger lighter socket appears to be completely dead. I have noticed there are 2 small (one red and one black) wires that go to each of the the battery terminals. The black is not connected to the battery due to a broken ring tag. I am wondering if this is the supply to the ciger lighther socket because everything else seems to work fine. Does anyone have any ideas?

POST 3Original post

Yes definitely. A lot of 996 do not power the cigarette lighter when the ignition is off. Check it by plugging a device into the socket and confirming whether it provides power when the ignition is on and off. Your OPC can connect it up and from memory, I believe it takes them about 30 minutes.

POST 6Original post

Am not sure if you mean dead when ignition on, or just when parked up with trickle charger connected. Anyway, its standard for it to be dead when parked up. You can get it rewired to permanently on (so you can use your trickle charger) at an indy for 1hr labour.
