Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Instead of smelling for exhaust, you should run a proper combustion by products test, which uses a simple kit to check for combustion by products above the coolant:

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Helping a friend with a 2002 type 996 C4 with the 3.6 liter engine. There is always pressure in the cooling system even when the engine hasn't been run for 24 hours. This is evidenced when removing the fill cap - a pronounced "blow-down" occurs. First thought was a leaking head gasket but there is no evidence of any dark blow-by getting in the coolant. Also, no indication of coolant smell in the exhaust. We are trying to trace a small external coolant leak and noticed the constantly pressurized system. My question - should the engine cooling system remained pressurized even when the engine cools to ambient temperature?

POST 2Original post

No, that is not normal. Instead of smelling for exhaust, you should run a proper combustion by products test, which uses a simple kit to check for combustion by products above the coolant:

Are you sure that it is not vacuum relief that you hear? Is the square peg with the metal bale up? (in the black bleeder valve behind the cap.) Up would indicate residual pressure. Down would indicate vacuum. Which would be normal. Where is the leak? Left rear under the expansion tank would most likely be a cracked tank. A fairly common occurrence.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
