My local Porsche dealer (Silverstone) have spent many hours with the car and are saying that everything leads to a problem with the torque converter which they cannot fix (Porsche only replace transmissions under warranty and won't repair).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, purchased my first 996 S2 cabriolet tip last year and absolutely love it. However it has recently developed a problem where the engine 'hunts' in 4th and 5th gear between 1000 and 2000 revs. My local Porsche dealer (Silverstone) have spent many hours with the car and are saying that everything leads to a problem with the torque converter which they cannot fix (Porsche only replace transmissions under warranty and won't repair). They've suggested contacting a transmission specialist. Has anyone had this experience, know of a good specialist and have any idea of what this may cost?

POST 2Original post

Rob, are you out of warranty ? How much is the replacement

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, the vehicles a 1998 so it's coming up for 10 years old - 73,000 miles

POST 4Original post

I had my gearbox rebuilt after a couple of gears mashed themselves at a mileage of 100k. It was a company in Liverpool called Selector who did the rebuild. Ninemeister took the gearbox out and sent it to them and then refitted as they only do the gearbox rebuilds. With a tip both the engine and gearbox comes out together so it's a good time to get any little leaking seals fixed aswell.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for that info, very useful. How much was it?

POST 6Original post

It was £2200 for the gearbox and about 10 hours labour (£60 ph)for the engine in and out. I had a few other jobs done at the same time so my bill was a bit more. all plus good ole vat.
