Do we recommend the Porsche part or an alternative?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys,
I need a new headlight switch for my 02 996 turbo. Seems its the same part in all 996 models. Do we recommend the Porsche part or an alternative? Im also sure Ive read somewhere that a headlight switch from another car works - think it was a Mercedes switch!?
thanks,
Matt
I just replaced my headlight switch. Since my original headlight switch worked for 23 years, I got a OE Porsche headlight switch. Yep, expensive, but it seemed like a good idea. Got it from AutoAtalnta and it took about 4 days to get it. I thought, with all the shipping problems, it would take a month or more. Here's how to do it

Seems like Porsche oe part is 140 ish from suncoast. I replaced mine this weekend after it started getting a little loose at 106k miles along with the ignition switch while I was in the area.
And a follow up. When I pulled mine out it sounded like a box of rocks when I shook it. Was definitely a wear / replacement item at 100k miles as the plastic had essentially disintegrated inside.
My 26 year old switch started acting funny. Not holding when you pull it out. Allowing it to overswitch (past the left detent). Feeling loose. I replaced it with a unit from FCP Euro instead of OEM- since OEM seems to be made in China now as well. The switch feel solid again. Just for kicks, I drilled out the tabs of the old switch to see what it looks like in there. I'm not sure if drilling out the tabs caused some of the plastic to break but once I opened it, I was surprised the switch even worked at all but it did explain all the looseness and inability to hold detents.
These are certainly a common enquiry with us as more and more 911's are reaching that age/mileage
Our history looks to be pretty strong with the aftermarket switch, they do seem to work just as well. I'll link it down below for anyone that is interested:

We do also carry the Genuine part:

I'd be more than happy to assist with a quote if anyone needs a switch shipped over
Thanks, Ethan from Design911
