I must mention: as part of the installation, I have installed also one of those stepdown modules for reducing the input signal from the headunit, since even with a couple of clicks it was just too loud.

For anyone reading this in the future with a GT3 Im fairly convinced that this unit wasnt designed with our cars in mind, it works, but I suspect the PCCM Classic for the air cooled car would likely be a better choice for the 996s without factory amps.

My shop was able to find the cable using the part number you provided and I'm very happy to say it solved the white noise and digital crackles for me completely.
Here's my experience upgrading the sound system on my '03 996 C4S with the MOST HIFI PCM2.0. My goals for the system are to maintain OEM appearance, improve sound quality, improve power and not add much additional weight.
I installed it at a stereo shop rather than at the dealer who seemed very unsure about the installation. I paid USD$450 for the install. I opted to hide the ugly iphone/USB controller behind the lower cubby in the front dash since I stream most of my music through CarPlay. I can still gain access by removing the carpeted piece in the passenger footwell.
There are 3 software issues to note if communication is through MOST BUS.
1) The clock won't sync through GPS or RDS. You have to set it manually.
2) The turn by turn navigation display on the dash must be activated thru the PIWIS by the Porsche dealer. It only works with the native navigation software. I heard there is a new firmware as of Jan/Feb 2023 that will update to show the turn by turn instructions on the dash even if you're using Apple Maps, Waze or Google Maps.
3) This one is a pretty major issue - Listening to music through my iphone on low volumes (Media vol 1 or 2) 50% of the volume is signal and 50% is distortion/noise/static. Does anyone else with a MOST car have the same issue? At higher volume levels and when the car is running, you would hardly notice it, but it still bothers me. Does anyone with a MOST car NOT have this issue? The benefit of MOST fiber optics is supposed to eliminate this type of noise from the audio source.. From my troubleshooting it seems be generated between the PCCM+/MOST control unit/Amp and is probably due to the GAIN being set way too high.
Under Settings->Volume, you can control the volume of the individual line inputs such as TUNER, Bluetooth, USB but NOT media. Hence, I have not found a way to reduce the gain when listening to CarPlay audio.
Other upgrades I've done to the sound system.:
Replaced the front dash separates with an excellent Focal kit from Rod at CAI. This is a noticeable significant improvement over the OEM speakers even with the stock amp. It is not necessary to replace the woofers on the doors if you have the HIFI/BOSE system as the bass is pretty optimized as it is for the doors. To get down to lower frequencies, you'd need to get a subwoofer installed.. Most people would be happy running this set up using the stock amp; however, I've decided to take it to the next level and will be installing a MOBridge MOST 25 8.1 channel DSP-AMP in a few months and then adding a custom subwoofer in the passenger footwell (that mimics the design of the Porsche sub in the Cabs). This amp is far more powerful than the OEM amp, weighs 1KG and will fit right into the same enclosure in the frunk. I believe I will be the only 996 owner with this specific set up. I'll let you know how that install goes.
I did my own install on my 2003 C4S over a year ago:
https://rennlist.com/forums/rennlist...l#post17895792
Can't say I've had your issues. To answer your questions:
1- My clock absolutely syncs from the PCCM+
2-I had my dealership enable the turn by turn in the cluster display when I was in for service; they didn't charge me for this. It only works with the Porsche Map not any of the CarPlay apps - which is my experience with ALL OEM CarPlay integrations. My 2022 MINI JCW only shows the MINI/BMW Map in the HUD. It's true that Apple is updating CarPlay to display into the vehicles native screens.
3- Don't have this issue at all. But mine was a completely stock BOSE system with MOST. Did your installer mess something up? I found the installation into the MOST system pretty much plug n play with very little risk of screwing up.
Only glitch, is that the trip odometer randomly resets to zero. Well documented and apparently there is a software/firmware update coming. It will have to wait for spring once I get the car on the road after it's winter slumber.
I was one of the first installations in the US when the PCCM Plus became available over 2 years ago. I did the installation.
1. I have a 03 Turbo with MOST.
2. The clock on my unit does not synchronized with master GPS system.
3. I coded the navigation feature with my PIWIS and turn-by-turn only works with the Porsche SIM chip.
4. I have the random resetting of the on-board computer which causes the trip odometer to reset to 0.
5. I have no sound quality issues whatsoever.
I hope Porsche makes the software updates available for free, but I doubt it. My local Porsche dealer, Sunset Porsche is totally clueless about how this system works, that’s why I decided to do the installation myself.
@mffarrell
can you explain what you and the others are referring to when you talk about the native display and turn by turn directions? I have the pccm+ and the Porsche sim. Is there a way to have directions display in the instrument cluster or something? Thanks!
I am looking forward to your thoughts and installation of the Mobridge amp. I looked it up and am considering going that route! How is the sound from the stock amp with the Focals? I bought them but did not install yet since they are 4 ohms and not 2 ohms like the OEM speakers. BUT, with the Mobridge amp and the PCCM+ system I feel it is still stock but I do wish it had a backup camera input!
IF you had the PCM system in your car the display would give turn by turn directions in the instrument cluster. The PCCM+ can do this but must be turned on with the PIWIS! Not sure if non PCM cars have this ability?
My car was a non PCM 2.0 car. I coded it as a PCM 2.0 with my PIWIS in order to enable the navigation system on the PCCM Plus. If your previous system was a PCM 2.0, you are all set! There is no coding necessary to enable the PCCM Plus navigation so it displays on your instrument cluster.
To enable the turn-by-turn navigation on the PCCM Plus, simply select navigation on your left stalk located on the steering column. Just push down or up on the stalk until you see navigation.
If your previous system was like mine, no PCM 2.0, you will have to code the instrument cluster to enable PCM 2.0.
The stock amp (HIFI) already sounds awesome with the Focals with the exception of the lack of lower frequencies due to the absent subwoofer. The door speakers unfortunately will not go down as low as a proper subwoofer. The 2nd issue is that the stock amp is a Class D amp so the music sounds a little synthetic not warm like a traditional A/B amp. I'm hoping 20 years of advancement in this area will result in a more natural sounding amp.
BTW, the dash speakers are 4 ohm, the door speakers are 2 ohm but they are bridged at the amp to act like 4 ohm speakers. Yes, the MoBridge DSP/AMP seems like the only amp that is plug and play with MOST. With DSP and better amp circuitry, I conjecture it will sound a lot better than the stock amp. Without going this route you'd have to connect to a separate MOST bridge with a digital/analog converter and then connect to an aftermarket amp. I think the MoBridge Amp will also have enough power for a single subwoofer built into the passenger footwell.
Perhaps it is only cars that are either analog systems or MOST HIFI that has the static at very low volumes. Too bad there is no way to control the built-in DSP chip in the head unit like other android units.
Yes, the dash clock does sync with the PCCM+. However, have you set the time to synchronize with GPS time or have you set the time manually? If you set it to sync with GPS time, it reads the wrong time.
I am in the US and have the US version of the PCCM plus in my 996.2 turbo that came with PCM 2.0 from factory. I have the time synchronization set to GPS but at random it would get reset to the wrong time. Does this mean I need a software update? If so, is there any source that can provide this update? I did the install myself.
I figured out the time sync issue. I went into the underlying android system by holding down the factory reset button for 10 seconds, then selecting t3launcher. Once in the Android UI go to settings and then time zone. My system was set to Shanghai. I changed it to my time zone and the time in the cluster is now showing the correct time. Hope this helps anyone else facing this issue.
Has anyone been able to get this mythical firmware update for the PCCM+? Ive heard of an update in another forum that fixes the random odometer reset issue, and now the update here that will allow CarPlay maps to display in the cluster. No dealer seems to have a clue.
Would be great if we could just order the update from Porsche on an sd card. Assume that is how it will be installed.
I sometimes chat on IG with Brock (996roadtrip guy - very nice dude). He worked with Porsche on some marketing stuff and was one of the early cars to get the unit. I asked him about this issue and he admitted to have experienced it as well. He confirmed that there is a fix out there and you need to get it through your dealer. Ideally a dealer that has a Classic Center might know more/better. That's what he suggested. My local dealer is moving into a new space soon and will be opening up a Classic Center along with the new dealer/service space so I hope to get some more info once it all goes live. I wish Porsche would cut the crap and just upload the firmware with upgrade directions just like any other company.
I gave up trying to get this update. The guys in the UK got a patch a couple of years ago to to fix the random odometer reset. I am going on 3 years of ownership on mine, and my local dealer, Sunset Porsche, is clueless about the problem. They want to charge me $200 to diagnose, yeah right!
Porsche lack of support for this product totally sucks!
I just did the PCCM+ install on my 03 C2 with Bose and the install process was surprisingly easy. Unfortunately, my USB breakout box seems to be DOA from the factory and getting it warrantied is a wildly frustrating process. Other than that (and being unable to use carplay because of it) the sound quality, fit and finish etc is all great.
Btw would be very interested in your design / setup for the subwoofer here. I have a cab so Im thinking the sub could be an easy swap since the enclosure is already there.
So,, just a shot in the wind, but if the music signal is noisy,, go to your local electrical supplier (Big commercial one)
And buy a fiber optic cleaning kit. Fiber does not like dust at the junction. there is one gadget to clean the male end
and one for the female end.
The dust that will screw this up is too small to see with the human eye.. and 1 speck in the wrong place will royally screw up the signal.
I just got my PCCM Plus installed and also have the digital crackle/noise problem. My car is a 2002 Turbo (actually Oct 2001) with Bose, non-MOST I believe. Are there any known fixes for this? Would the fiber optic cleaning tip help?
Got it. After some more experimentation, I think at least part of the problem is that the amp is too sensitive. Even with no sound playing I can hear a strong analog hiss from the speakers. If there is a way to reduce the amp gain, the noise would be reduced as well.
The digital artifacts start when I use CarPlay: apparently this is interference from the signals sent back and forth to the phone.
Ill check if the extra ground connection that Im reading about has been made at the amplifier.
I can find various other posts with exactly the same problem, but no solution unfortunately. On 911uk.com, someone mentions (in 2020):
http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t...r=asc&start=20
Various other people have the same problem, also in the PCCM Plus thread here on the 996 forum, but no one seems to have a solution. Curious if this kind of adapter would fix it.
Seems to be a lot of issues on a Porsche unit sad really considering how expensive it is and lacking all the goodies
happy as hell with my kenwood 9700 and backup camera
all that at 60% the Porsche price
After YEARS reading this forum, just registered to chime in.
I've had the PCCM+ installed in a non-MOST 996 Turbo with Bose, and guess what? Same story: hiss and crackles appear ONLY when plugging the phone to the USB box. Without the phone plugged, sound is perfect over USB drive, DAB+, etc.
I must mention: as part of the installation, I have installed also one of those stepdown modules for reducing the input signal from the headunit, since even with a couple of clicks it was just too loud. I saw that recommendation here in Rennlist too.
So far, I lazily blamed that module for the noises. But it looks like I am not alone in this.
From the behaviour, it feels as though there is some sort of electrical loop created when connecting the phone, so I wonder whether installing a Carplay wireless module would do the trick? That way, the phone would be connected wirelessly, thus preventing the creation of an actual physical loop with the cable. Not sure it'd work, but perhaps that's an option?
Anyway, looking forward to seeing whether other people come up with a solution. It's not that is a deal killer, but it's indeed noticeable at low speeds. Also, worth mentioning: it does NOT always happen. It happens like 90% of the times that the phone is connected... but there's some 10% of the times where the sound is crystal clear. Go figure.
The newer ones have some of the bugs fixed, like the random odometer reset. If you were an early adopter like me, Porsche could care less and their support is nonexistent.
If I knew there would be zero support, I wouldnt have purchased, but instead gone with another less expensive option.
i dont have a stepdown module currently so Im also dealing with loud noise as soon as the PCCM is turned on. The crackles/digital noise are unbearable so currently my shop is working on a suitable stepdown solution. Which did you use? I figured this would also bring down the crackles to an acceptable level. Like you I get them 90% of the time, very odd.
Honestly Im close to returning the whole PCCM unit and putting the original PCM1 back in with an aux adapter. So fed up with it. I usually just turn it off right away and listen to the engine.
People with 2002 Bose vehicles, there is an adapter that Suncoast provided to me that connects the black speaker connector (actually line level to the analog bose amp) to the yellow line level out on the PCCM+. I have had zero noise issues with this adapter. Did you guys omit this adapter?
FWIW,, I ran across a note in a forum about if you have a later 2003 with the most/bose, it shares the stereo with the Cayenne with Bose.
Some places sell parts to do the adaptions and list the Cayenne but not the 03 911 because they were a 1 year wonder on the stereo??
Or just cause more Cayenne owners upgrade to fancy audio? Who knows.
I see that Suncoast specifically asks whether you have a 2002 Bose system. I wonder what kind of adapter this is and why Porsche doesnt include it itself.
The MOST Cayenne's share the radio setup with 997's it is a PCM2.1. There is a PCCM+ for Cayenne's and 997's. The release version was incompatible with the Cayenne dash (!) and caused the Check Engine light to come on all the time. A local Cayenne owner had a local Porsche dealer (Porsche Westwood) install the PCCM+ in his Cayenne and this dealer worked with Porsche in Germany for seven weeks to fix the bugs in the PCCM+. So now 997 and Cayenne owners get a bug-free PCCM+ while us 996 guys are stuck with a hot mess.
Can you post a pic showing where you installed the adapter?
I received the same adapter when I purchased the unit for my 2002 Turbo, but I could not find the black or red connector anywhere that matched up to the adapter.
I ended up returning it and purchasing the amp passthrough from JustCarKits which seemed to fix the loud volume issue.
Here ya go, new female yellow connector goes into the headunit, you plug the existing female yellow connector from the vehicle side into the new red connector, and plug the vehicle side black 8 pin female connector into the new male black connector. The adapter lets you send the preamp outputs from the headunit to the Bose amp via the black connector and the remote turn on signal to the Bose amp via the yellow connector (vehicle side)

hope that helps!
sidenote, the original radio in the car had a much lower power speaker level output and better noise isolation Im betting, thats why the bose amp could handle it. Once you get rid of the junky level adapters youll be blown away with how good the radio sounds.
I appreciate the picture. I didn't catch that about the red connector. Thanks for the tip on that.
I can't figure out why the black connector from the adapter wouldn't match up to my car side harness.
I think I'll repurchase the adapter harness and try again.
For anyone reading this just so you know I have a 2002 996 Turbo.
@jhomer
Thank you!! My shop was able to find the cable using the part number you provided and I'm very happy to say it solved the white noise and digital crackles for me completely. Like I said, I was very close to just putting the PCM1 back in. Very happy with this solution which seems much better than a step-down converter.
Pretty sure the bose question is to about the ground pin on the wiring harness to the amp. The old DSP panel turned the amp on and off with a ground. If you remove the DSP panel, you have to ground one of the pins to get the amp to still work. I had that in my 986S.
I installed this PCCM+ in my '99 996 (replaced PCM1.0) and honestly it was a mistake. Everything phone related is too quiet. When I'm using the radio with the top down, my volume is set at 15/30. When I'm using bluetooth or usb my volume is 25/30 with the "loudness" option on. Some people suggested changing the volume on my phone. My phone volume has no effect on the android auto, and doesn't make it any louder across bluetooth. I'm going to remove it and put in a gt3 delete and a marine head unit and be done with the whole damn thing.
The ground cable applies to a different configuration. The 2002 Bose setup is not discussed in Porsche's instructions so it is very valuable that @jhomer posted the solution here.
I installed the PCCM+ in my 2003 Turbo last year.
Everything is working as it should be, except for the fact that it shuts down every 20-30min which is a little frustrating. When it happens and I wait for a few seconds, I can switch it back on and everything picks off where it stopped (e.g. CarPlay Music and Navigation) and works fine, until it eventually switches off again
It happens regardless of whether I am listening to FM/DAB Radio or use CarPlay.
Any thoughts from the community on that?
I wanted to report back that the adapter 996.642.341.00 worked great for my 2002 Turbo with Bose.
Took me a few minutes this second go around trying to figure out how it installed, but it completely solved the sound issue.
Red ISO plug from the car goes to the black ISO plug on the adapter. Yellow square plug from car goes to the red plug on the adapter and yellow square plug from the adapter plugs in to the PCCM+.
Thank you for this thread! Finally Porsche has offered an adapter for the most common problem with non-MOST analog cars running a frunk amplifier. I've posted to many of these threads on several sub-forums and it seems that Porsche didn't really cross all their "T's" or dot their "i's" when they first released the PCCM+. Even the dealerships couldn't figure it out. To me, it seemed simple to me, but it was a major oversight. All of the preexisting Becker and Blaupunkt OEM radios dating back to the aircooled 911 cars used the YELLOW plug to output line-level pre-amp output to the frunk amplifiers. When 996 owners with pre-MOST cars tried to installed the PCCM+, they quickly realized the unit would not even produce a sound in many cases. Those with aftermarket HI/LO converters found that the sound was plaque with volume issues and produced 60 hz hum. It seemed insane that Porsche would engineer a headunit and not have better instructions for installation. Thankfully, you guys finally figured out. Hats off! Thank you for contributing.
I am having a similar issue. The unit has started crashing frequently and rebooting itself. Also my volume **** and other physical button inputs now have a massive 3-5 sec lag before they register any effect. The touchscreen doesn't have this lag. If I try to do several inputs quickly (ie roll the volume up and down) the unit crashes before it even has a chance to react. Not even sure what do to about this; my local dealer doesn't even know what to do with these things.
I'm going to have one for sale here shortly! I installed it. Got it working. The volume in android sucks, some of the controls sucks, doesn't interface with the can bus and lost all the trip information that was on the pcm. Poor unit all around. Going to go with a sony marine head unit and the gt3 delete.
correct. After installing the unit last year I took it to a Porsche Center as it was not working correctly. Turns out that a part was faulty. When they replaced that, they must have played with the settings as well and since it was running fine for 20-30min each time, they did not check. I looked a long time for a solution to the problem and was checking that setting more out of curiosity as I would not have expected it to be left in the wrong mode
Something is not right because the CAN bus should be recognized. Going to an aftermarket units won't solve any of your problems. The Sony won't interface with Porsche Canbus channel nor will it perfect fix for the phone with the convertible down. I installed an aftermarket unit in my 03 cabriolet and it was almost impossible for the other people to hear me. Too much ambient noise.
I'm wondering if some of these issues are software based. I know the trip meter reset issue is and that there is an update available. Getting that update is the issue and I'm not to keen on paying an hourly rate at the dealership for it. Granted they have a clue about it. One of my dealers didn't
Your 03 has a most bus, that's completely different animal than my 99 cab with hifi. The can and most are two separate systems entirely that get mixed up with the description of this head unit. The PCCM+ doesn't read from the can bus, so it displays no car information. It sends audio information to the instrument cluster via the canbus, but the '99 cluster doesn't display radio information so that function is moot. The PCCM+ has an amplifier and a fiber optic converter (MOST). In "can" mode (vice amp mode) it is outputing a digital signal to the fiber ring (MOST) which newer 996 amps use to produce sound. In amp mode it is directly driving the cars speakers with it's own amp, or it is supplying an analog audio signal to the analog amp. Your car has the MOST ring, so the speakers are 100% driven from your amp and the volume with be normalized across all the possible inputs. The PCCM onboard amp is not normalizing analog audio outputs correctly. I think it's mostly an issue with a poor amp in the PCCM.
The Sony matches the amber interior lights of the 996 and is nice and loud. I lose Navigation (never bought the maps), android auto (sound is terrible), and instrument cluster display (never had it). I'll still technically have hands free calling, but I don't want to talk to anyone while I'm driving anyway.
To answer the question about MOST compatibility directly, yes. The suncoast parts package has all the adapters for just about every possible 996 configuration. There is a most adapter, and since that's a digital output it should eliminate the issues I'm having with the onboard amp. I really think that Porsche designed this version of the PCCM+ for the MOST 996's. And rightly so, since I'd guess most 996's use the MOST system.
I really appreciate your insight. Yea, I am aware the differences since I've own three of these cars and worked on all the system to repair problems or improve the system. One of my 996 was an analog based '02 with the CDR-220 and HiFi option. I've started alot of these PCCM+ threads to help people. Spend countless hours looking closely at schematics from the 986/996 shop manual to assist people that have had their wire harnesses hacked up. I've dealt with MOST and still believe those cars have the least amount of trouble with the new PCCM+ units. Curious, you also have complained about the audio level. Did you install the Porsche analog adapter cable - #996.642.341.00 or use a HI/LO adapter to feed the amplifier? It's my understand that the Canbus should display data like the PCM1. The Canbus problem your opinion from working with the unit or a more official opinion from Porsche?
I'm pretty sure the current version that I got from suncoast covered that. The radio and bluetooth audio levels were fine. The android auto audio level was terrible. Since the first two were fine I expect the issue is software related. Some android update might fix it, or a software patch to the PCCM would do the trick. I'm not holding my breath that Porsche will release a free software update. God forbid.
The variety of possible instrument clusters in the 986/996 is staggering. I replaced the one in my '00 boxster and there's seriously 20-30 different variations. The issue is the pre01 clusters have a slightly smaller LCD screen compared to the 01 and up dot matrix screens. The center LCD screen has 2 rows of digits, one for speed and a second for computer data. It can only do numbers, it doesn't have the resolution to do text or station names. So any output data (station names/song titles) from the PCCM to the cluster is wasted. The original PCM 1 read canbus information to display trip stats etc, and I believe a redundant AC display. The PCCM+ doesn't and doesn't even use those connectors. I sort of expected that level of integration from what was billed as a modern upgrade to the original PCM. It's closer to an ok chinese double din display with a porsche label slapped on it and a ton of adapters to mostly fit all 30 variants of 986/996 out there. The adapters part is impressive, but the actual unit isn't. I think it works well for the 996.1 and 996.2 but there's a very limited number of 996.0s that were not tested for.
The 03 With Bose+most is also a snowflake from what I can tell. It looks like they used the Cayan head unit which is different in some way?
The compatibility lists so far all seem to leave the 03 out. Even a lot of the Most adapters I can find in the market stop at 02 in their lists..
Anybody happy with a PCCM upgrade in a 03 Cab with Bose?
Cheers
I recently installed the PCCM+ in my 2004 Turbo Cab. Newer unit so no time issues and no odometer issues.
The issue I'm having is that every time I start the car, the last input I used (either Micro SD or Tuner) blasts on and scares the crap out of me.
and I can't seem to find a way to shut the music off and have waze give me spoken directions via Android auto.
Anyone know how to handle this? I read the manual to no avail and I'm hoping it's something easy I missed.
Can you post a screenshot of your s/w version numbers? I also got a "new" (packaging was dated 2022) unit recently, but it had the same software version as my old unit from 2 years earlier.
Thanks. FWIW that OS version number is the same I've had on 2 units, one purchased in 2021 (2020 mfr date) and one purchased last month (2022 mfr date).
Anyone with a MOST car that has the low level static from the speakers in the dash and the rear when the PCCM + unit is switched on? The signal is not volume dependent and is not amplified. All the cars that have this distortion seem to be non-MOST cars.
My setup is PCCM+ in 987.1 (2005) with ASK amplifier. I have the white noise on mute, alternator breakthrough & digital interference. Volume was way too sensitive. I believe this is a problem with analogue amplifier config where head unit is amplifying (I suspect pre-out with MOST doesnt exhibit same problem). Dealer suggested a temporary fix using the custom equaliser setting with all ranges set to min. This partly solves the volume sensitivity, doesnt do anything for the white noise.
Sounds just like my problem, see post #47 by jhomer for the fix. You need an adapter cable. Strangely no dealers seem to know about this even though its a Porsche part.
Yes, I know about the Porsche Wiring Harness, it was developed for the 986 with external amplifier. I wonder if it is the solution for the ASK amplifier, as some speakers are driven direct from head unit in this configuration. Porsche dealer has raised a problem report with this suggestion. I am waiting to hear response.
Regarding your mute white noise issue, any fix? I have a 987.1 with ASK amplifier and recent fit of PCCM + by Porsche dealer. Two months since and no fix forthcoming. It seems to be a problem with the design of the PCCM+ head unit, and from what Ive read on forums it has been there since the PCCM+ was introduced.
I have the white noise problem with a PCCM+ on my 996 GT3 (no MOST, no external amplifier). I bought the cable jhomer referrenced and it didnt solve the problem for me. Im happy to sell it someone if they want to see if it fixes their problem with a non-MOST external amplifier. PM me.
I'm getting feeback thru the speakers after the car is OFF. Sounds very odd and is not consistent each time the car is off, but feedback is always there. Anyone else?
997.1 2008 GT3 which had the Bose Setup.
Order the part from the earlier post and after it's installed, will report back.
Thx
Hey
@frederik
Following your successful experience, a mate of mine and I both purchased the Porsche adapter recommended by
@jhomer
for our 2001 non-MOST Bose 996 Turbo. In both cases, the problem with the static produced by the previous HI-LO converter was resolved, and the sound was overall MUCH cleaner. An absolute winner in that aspect.
Unfortunately, we both developed the same problem: we both had a flat battery after having the car sitting for more than 4 days without having the car plugged to the battery tender. This same thing happened to both of us ONLY after installing the adapter.
We haven't yet troubleshooted the actual source of battery drain, but it's a bit of a coincidence that in both cases this happened after installing the adapter, so that's our main suspect at the moment. We'll confirm the source of parasitic loss soon, though.
With that in mind, I wanted to ask you: did you (or anyone else for that matter) run into a similar problem, or could hint us towards what could we check in order to prevent the battery from going flat due to parasitic loss? If this is confirmed to be linked to the adapter, it will be unfortunately a bit of a dealbreaker and will have to go back to the HI-LO adaptor :/
Thanks beforehand for any kind of advice/hint.
That doesn't happen to me. I did have to replace the battery a few months later but that was because my alternator failed and charged it at 16V+. Since then everything has been OK. Just last week, I started the car without a hitch after letting it sit outside for 9 days. If I don't drive it for more than two weeks however, I use a battery charger.
In short, there doesn't seem to be a clear relationship between the adapter and battery drain.
Has anyone had any luck trying to find a firmware update? My radio has been fine for over a year, but now, sometimes the sound will not come on, regardless of source. Then if I reboot the radio, it will come back on (sometimes it still doesn't). Assuming a software issue, since a hardware issue would be more consistent. (doesn't matter if I'm moving or not or if the motor is even running or not). 2003 996 TT
I have not but haven't looked in a while. I want to get my hands on it in order to fix the random trip odometer reset. Besides that the PCCM+ has been great for me.
Re. your no sound issue, was it present previously with your OEM radio? I experience this but believe its related to my Bose amp. I've isolated the issue to appear only when it gets cold. When temps are 60 or higher, I get sound with no issues. When it's closer to 50F I need to drive for a bit and/or cycle the radio on and off before I get sound. My wild guess it might be related to condensation in the amp or something small expanding / contracting due to temp changes.
No, the OE radio and this radio have worked fine. It wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that this started happening. My temps here are usually over 60* most of the time. (North Florida) and it was happening during the later part of summer. Maybe the amp is going out.
My car was at Porsche a few weeks back and they loaded a new firmware update. My issue is that after a phone call the screen goes dark until I press the home button.
It didn't help.
I presume BOSE with fiber connectivity? My 2003 with the stock HU does this. I have found that it will stay no sound until the car is locked/unlocked. Something is losing connectivity and the lock/unlock cycle resets everything. I don't find that odd - as the HU (CDR-23) has to go thru a lock/unlock cycle to be updated. I added a MR12volt unit to the car and had to have the external CD changer option turned on. The shop that activated it told me they set the option but it was not working, so I went with them into the shop, told them to close the doors, and I locked/unlocked the car, and as if by magic, the MR12volt (emulates the external CD changer) began to function.

2003 C2
Yeah this is a bit backwards. Imagine going to Apple to get your phone on the new OS. Do you know if the update was done via PIWIS and did they charge you for the update? I think if we could have access to the new firmware, you should be able to load it on a miniSD card and run the update from the radio itself.
Correct, Bose with MOST system. Def not a lock/unlock problem as I have never locked the car when I get in it, lol. BUT I will try that after this weekend and see. Interesting that you've found that quirk, that's the first I've heard of it and it does make sense.
Not lock/unlock from inside. Outside. As in parked. When I had the failure with the CDR-23 - powering off the HU did nothing to relieve it. I just know that the power down that happens with locked from outside made the sound come back. And it was quick - no waiting for the full sleep mode once locked.
It has only happened perhaps 3 times so far - and I have owned the car since March 2020.

Newer VWs use an SD card, I can't see why Porsche would be any different. May be worth combing through PET to find a part number for an SD card perhaps
Maybe someone here knows some clever folk from Porsche dealership who would know what and where to look for that update file. Guys at my local Porsche center were absolutely clueless what am I even talking about when I asked :|
Honestly it's one of the poorest supported devices I ever had...
I spoke to my recent dealer as well and they were also clueless. I reached out to Brock (996roadtrip on instagram) who had a similar bug to me and told me he needed to go to a dealership that was also a classic center. He did some advertising work with Porsche and wasn't a simple process even for him. Poor support indeed.
I think all the posts I found mentioning updated firmware were from UK based forums
The op of this thread mentions Porsche gave him an SD card and instructions which he kindly uploaded. I'm not sure if they would work on US based PCCM+, it's also worth noting the OP is 2 years old so I would guess another update would have come out by now.
https://911uk.com/threads/pccm-updat...on-bug.114328/
this page mentions a new adapter to eliminate white noise
https://911uk.com/threads/pccm-updat...114328/page-11
hi, have loaded this and it doesn't do anything to resolve the random trip reset.....the clock issue that people seem to be having where the odo wont hold the time and continually resets after the user has set it....time has to be set from the headunit itself and then this will never happen again (i came from single din cdr23)....I do not use the onboard maps anyway so it was a moot point but the odo still resets whenever it feels like it...would love a fix a for this.
That's because it's an old update, the only one that has ever surfaced (being an evidence that updates are totally possible to apply without any porsche tools etc) and it doesn't fix the odometer bug.
I've been watching these PCCM threads every time they come up. I wanted to get one, but it appears it can be more bad than good. That is disappointing.
I mean - it's pretty basic (which in a car is both a pro and a con), but I like that it works seamlessly with my factory MOST amp and speakers setup and that it somewhat integrates with the car (cluster). It's just that it doesn't seem to be supported, like, at all by Porsche - what you see now is what you get. And because it's such a niche device, there's no third party (eg. XDA developers etc) support either.
I have PCCM installed in my 2004 C4S. It didn't not have PCM upon purchase. While I'm not crazy about how the dealership installed it (nor what they charged nee for the trouble) I must admit that the unit is functioning as expected. I'm not having any of the noise issues that other have reported. That being said, I was unaware that some of the NAV info could be sent to the dash. However, since my car was never equipped with NAV, I wouldn't be surprised if this is unavailable on my car.
Velcro is sloppy. Panel gaps between the upper and lower consoles are more evident after instal.
Mine didn't have PCM originally but after I installed PCCM+ myself, I had my Porsche Centre enable the turn by turn in the dash with PIWIS/ As others have said, it take a few minutes and they didn't charge me for it.
FYI: I made my CarPlay wireless with the Ottocast dongle and hid all of it behind the centre console; works flawlessly. All you see is the charge cable coming out inside the storage cubby. No ugly connector box attached with velcro. Your dealer should have done better; it's a simple install especially on a 2003 and newer car...took me less than 5 hours and I was taking my time!
Same here: I used a wireless dongle, works flawlessly. I actually ran a splitter USB to
some 3-d blank
fillers and put them in the batwing, in case anyone needs to charge. But I use the
hazard trim phone mount
and charge my phone wirelessly thru that, while driving. No wires or boxes in view. I'll probably do the turn-by-turn myself with my PIWIS.
It's not worth it though - it works only with the device built-in navi maps, it will only display a short message with carplay/android auto maps running.
Well that's the exact reason I got it done on mine
I would use the built-in one, if only the maps (which Porsche SELLS for quite a lot of money for what they are) wouldn't be so outdated.
I just got an email from the dealership asking me if I was happy with the installation. Perfect opportunity to let them know that I'm not. I've sent them all of my concerns. If they make it right, Great! If not, I can fix most of it myself, but I won't be going back there for this type of work again.
PCCM+ owners - can you comment on phone charging? Does connecting via USB for CarPlay also adequately charge your phone?
I find WAZE is a massive battery hog. Does the phone charge while running Waze?
thanks!
Well if your phone is at 95% battery when connecting, then maybe. I don't have much experience with my 15, but my previous 14 Pro could charge as little as 7-10% during 2h drive.
Which I don't mind, not discharging while in CarPlay is enough for me as I don't go on a trip with empty phone battery, but still - it's not very efficient with modern battery capacities.
When I get into my car from home, my phone (iphone 13 mini) is usually at 100% already. The PCCm keeps my phone topped up. The few times I've used it with the battery at 80%, it's charged the phone fully within an hour (not checking while driving though)
Hey!
I have recently acquired this adapter (996.642.341.00) and today I decided to use it with my head unit. I tried to follow the instructions provided by @jhomer but I wasn't successful, i.e. I blew two fuses in the process 😂.
My head unit has the following cables (from left to right): blue/green/yellow (as a single cable), brown and black (based on testing this is the cable that provides power).
Based on the instructions:
I was able to
and
. Regarding
I was met with some difficulties. My black 8 pin female connector layout doesn't exactly match the adapter male black connector, which required some "force" to plug in. After doing this I turned on the car and lost one fuse.
I looked into the connectors again and noticed that the brown one matched the connection perfectly but once again I lost another fuse. At this point I decided to stop, plug everything as it was before and get another fuse.
Hopefully I am just missing a simple detail and this can be addressed.
Thank you!
P.S. I attached some photos of my installation.
P.S.S. Something that I also noticed is that on the photo provided by @jhomer, we have two instances of blue/green/yellow cables.
It would also be helpful to know what MY car you have and the type of factory audio system (i.e. CDR-220 or PCM, base, HiFi, BOSE, etc.). Does it have a factory frunk amplifier?
You are right! I have a 911 996.2 Targa from 2002 (MY2002). From factory it has the following options:
- M662 (PCM 1 Porsche Communication Management screen with navigation, telephone module, radio, cassette player)
- M663 (Telephone handset for PCM 1)
- M680 (
Bose sound system (analog))
- M692 (6-disc CD changer Becker Porsche CDC-3)
Regarding
I believe M680 includes one.
Please let me know if I can provide more information.
Thanks
@ZuffenZeus
!
You have one the most complicated of all analog (i.e. pre-MOST) systems - that is, PCM1 and BOSE with CD changer and phone. I'll have to review the schematic in the shop manual to better assist you and this system. The fact that it's blowing fuses is more reason to study the connections more closely. I've very bust at the moment and so if someone else can chime in on this that would be helpful. I'll try to look into this system on Monday.
Question - have you grounded the M680 amplifier pin as noted on page 8-9 in the attached TSB?
Thank you for getting back to me
@ZuffenZeus
.
I did the installation a while ago but I do remember having issues at that step, i.e. not finding the black 18-pin connector cable in the picture. Could this be the reason the fuse is blowing?
I will look again and see if I can find the cable (by the end of the next week I should have feedback).
At this point in the installation, replace the blown fuses and disconnect the special ISO adapter cable for now.
First things first... you need to follow the steps that Porsche has described or you won't get any sound out of the system. The 18 pin connector supplies power and line level audio to the M680 amplifier. The M680 amp should be located on the passenger side of the car in the frunk. You MUST remove the DSP data line #17 (black/red/yellow) on the connector and then replace with a grounded cable (996.642.587.00) on line#17 on the connector.
Thanks once again for the information. I replaced the fuses, removed the adapter and everything is back to normal.
I do have sound and everything works as expected, other than the sound being too loud at level 5 and some crackling noise.
As soon as I have more information I will let you know.
Thanks!
Hi, with help of this thread I got aware of the Porsche ISO adapter for the MY2002 Bose PCM1 CD-Changer configuration.
With the adapter in place, the sound works okayish. Low frequencies are way too loud, eben at low EQ settings and also overall volume bandwidth seems reduced. I think that is because the Bose amp was fed a slightly amplified signal from PCM but the pccm+ speaker oit level is too high. So the amp out is used and fed to the normally speaker level plug.
What surprises me in your answer is, that you recommend to ground the amp. I did not do that, since I always thought it only is possible and necessary with the m680 my 98-01 sound package. In my02 M680 was used for Bose analoge and starring with my03 for bose via most.
So my question is: do you have positive results with grounding the Bose analoge amp? I would assume that the adapter then is superficial because the speakers would require amped volume and not line level.
Also I thought the pin 18 action was to override the EQ button for the DSP of the m680, since you remove the control panel.
That is correct. The signal level was not correct for systems with a frunk amplifier. Porsche is all it's marketing wizardry was able to sell lots of different configurations. That makes it's a big challenge to develop new technology with modern features that integrates with older systems and ISO connections. The core problem was the PCCM+ was NOT sending SPEAKER LEVEL audio to the amp when it needed "pre-amp" LINE LEVEL from the YELLOW ISO PLUG. Some configurations worked with overdriven audio, some didn't work at all. The intension of the Porsche adapter cable is not to attenuate the SPEAKER LEVEL output; but instead, route the correct LINE LEVEL audio to the amp.
The TSB was officially released by Porsche after they investigated the problem with the PCCM+ not producing sound on DSP (M680) systems. This TSB came BEFORE the release of the official Porsche ISO adapter cable. Based on reports here on Rennlist, the people affected were the systems with M680 amps. You have PCM1, (DSP)M680, and BOSE, but based on their information, pin17 needs to be grounded.
Again, every person I've helped with the M680 no-sound issue, grounded the cable per Porsche instructions and the PCCM+ worked abet the sound still being overdriven to the amplifier. That was corrected with the new ISO adapter cable. YOU, have a very unique system. Therefore, if you can't get it to your pleasure, then the best course of action would be to contact your nearest dealership and arrange a meeting to discuss resolution of the problem.
@wcytarga
, the Porsche Loudspeaker ISO Harness 996-642-341-00 is suppose be like this. Plug A (Black / Chassis Side) directly into PCCM A. Plug B (Brown / Chassis Side) into Black Connector (Harness). PLUG C1 (Yellow / Chassis Side) into Red Connector (Harness). PLUG C1 (Yellow / Harness) into PCCM C1. I plugged C2 (Green) and C3 (Blue) into Red Connector (Harness) since I am not planning on using the CD changer.
@Moehre
we have figure this out.
I have a MY2002 CR-220 with BOSE ANALOG M680, non-DSP, non-MOST. I have PLUG A (Black), PLUG B (Brown), PLUG C1 (Yellow, only 1 wire connected, BK/RED for amplifier switch On/Off), PLUG C2 (GREEN), PLUG C3 (BLUE). wiring should be similar to yours since we share the BOSE ANALOG M680 regardless of stock headunit.
PCCM+ Version: AP: 20210922 15:21 / OS: 25.0.0.6.1.0.1.1 / Purchased 05/2024
Just received the Porsche Loudspeaker ISO Harness 996-642-341-00, it did lower the gains and reduced the white-noise but it is still there even on mute and PCCM+ EQ had no effect on the subwoofer.
Without the Porsche Loudspeaker ISO Harness, very high gains, high white noise but the bass was manageable with the PCCM+ EQ. I honestly prefer the audio quality without the Porsche Loudspeaker ISO Harness but only if I can get rid of the white noise.
I gained a lot of information from these 996 PCCM+ threads. MY2002 is unique, a transition year. We don't have a DSP so there isn't a PIN 17 (DSP data line) to ground. We do have 2 amplifiers, main one which powers front and rear stage, "additional" amplifier which powers the subwoofer.
I am also wondering if we need to create a more substantial / direct ground for Plug Socket P1 (main amp) - PIN A (BRN) and Plug Socket K12A81 ("additional" amp) PIN A1 (BRN) to eliminate the white noise. This might not do anything for the subwoofer.
I went though all the secret menu settings and there isn't anything related to Subwoofer / Gain / Speaker-level / Line-level. I feel like this issue could be easily solved with software -- like a tune.
I am not sure on what to do next.
A. Direct Ground for both amplifiers -- this might solve the white noise but not the subwoofer issue.
B. Remove the Porsche Loudspeaker ISO Harness, buy 2x SPEAKER-LEVEL to IN-LEVEL ISO Adaptor and run them tandem (I couldn't find the post but this sounds promising)
C. Bypass Bose Amplifiers and run speaker output directly from PCCM+ to speaker by jumping Plug Socket P2 and delete subwoofer.
@Body In White
since you don't have an amp, have you found a resolution for the white noise?
D. Noise filters?
In the time since I installed the PCCM+ in my GT3, Ive seen a few other 996 GT3s with PCCM+ units and all of them have the white noise problem. For anyone reading this in the future with a GT3 Im fairly convinced that this unit wasnt designed with our cars in mind, it works, but I suspect the PCCM Classic for the air cooled car would likely be a better choice for the 996s without factory amps.
Back to your question, I was going to try and build an appropriate noise filter, but honestly, the white noise is so faint that you cant hear it once the car is on.
IMHO, the white noise is audible because the signal from the PCCM+ is not being attenuated properly feeding the amplifier. Even the best of electronic sound equipment will have a noise floor (look for signal-to-noise ratio figures when comparing head units) and if the pure signal is not handled correctly, noise could be amplified to the point where you can hear it under super quiet conditions. When I was young, I got involved with installing and running big sound reinforcement systems. We would purchase brand new amps and speakers from all the best brands, connect them together and turn the volumes up all the way up (without an audio signal) just to see how good the amplification was handling noise reduction and filtering. You'd be surprised how much noise you could hear.
I agree with you. Porsche didn't really put a lot of effort in supporting the older analog cars with frunk amplifiers. Seems the MOST - PCM2 folks have the smoothest transition to these units.
I also have this issue. That little hiss when the car is quiet. I thought it was a faulty fan somewhere, but when I realized that it was coming out of he speakers. My car is a 996.2, non-Bose, that came with a single DIN radio. The previous owner had a single DIN Alpine deck (I didn't notice any hiss, but I only had it for a week or two before "upgrading")
@ZuffenZeus
apologies for the radio silence, life got in the way and couldn't get back to this topic.
Once again I opened the frunk and started looking for the DSP data line (black/red/yellow) and I wasn't able to find it. I took the following pictures to show what I found while taking things apart.
On #1 I stripped it all apart and couldn't find any cable that matched the DSP data line.
On #2 I stripped it all apart and found the following cables, which once again didn't match the DSP data line.
Please let me know your thoughts, and hope the following pictures help provide extra context.
Thanks!
Now that I've had time to think about your setup, I don't believe you're going to find the DSP line that is noted in Porsche technical instructions. Those instructions apply to the M680 HAES amplifier. Yes, it's confusing and Porsche doesn't really help with their limited installation and TSB information.
As you can see in the picture below, this is the more common Harman amplifier associated with the DSP option. You'll notice it has the 18-pin connector unlike your BOSE setup. Therefore, pinning the ground that is mentioned in the Porsche TSB, doesn't apply to your setup.
The best I can offer you is the schematic that I posted above to help trace lines. Are you still blowing fuses? Do you have the BOSE subwoofer behind the rear seats?
Where did you find these option codes that start with the letter "M"?
Here's my theory: You have options 662, 663, 680, 692, but none of them have "M" in front of the number. This originally confused me. The amp in the TSB is a HAES (Harman) M680 and applies to the technical instruction for getting the PCCM+ to work with those systems.
You on the other hand have the BOSE amplifier and if you remove it from the mount, you'll see this serial number and model information.
Thank you for the comment.
To ensure I don't blow more fuses when trying to follow your instruction, please let me know if the information on the following picture is correct.
Thanks!
Thanks for getting back to me!
You are right, I believe I saw M at the top and assumed all the codes included M
. I got the following from my dealership (all the text is in Spanish, not really sure why):
Based on the above what are my options?
Thanks once again
@ZuffenZeus
!
Thank you for confirming. I was thinking that the factory speakers are not compatible with the PCCM+ but I see that you upgraded your factory speakers as well so thought is a dead end.
I no longer think it is a factory amplifier or factory speaker issue. The PCCM+ seems to be better fitted for the MOST system. IMO, the PCCM Classic won't be a better fit, having the large Apple CarPlay screen is a game changer.
The white noise is faint with the Porsche Loudspeaker ISO Harness but the audio volume is also faint.
This will probably be on the back burner until it bothers me again... I will look into ISO Speaker Level to Line Level harness to try out.
Or... Option E - get a louder exhaust
It was probably there and you didn't notice.
That looks correct!
@wcytarga
Take a picture of the option label underneath the front hood. (looks like attached image below) This label will tell us everything we need to know about when it comes to your car.
Also, you never did answer my question... Do you have the BOSE subwoofer?
Longtime lurker first time poster on this one...
2004 MOST / BOSE 996 Cab. Installed PCCM+ in early 2022. Worked
flawlessly
for 2.5 years (I mean, sure, it reset the trip odometer).
In the past month or so, it has developed intense lag on all inputs: change the volume? Wait maybe 30 seconds for it to actually change. Lag is consistent on all inputs, except SIRI in CarPlay mode.
Also gets stuck in a reboot cycle that renders the whole thing useless. Reboot, load, reboot, load, reboot, load.
I did a factory reset that did nothing.
Thoughts?
The only clue is that the car has had a few other electrical gremlins over the past few months, which I am guessing is a failing ignition switch. Feels hard to connect those dots, but ignition switch (or battery) seems to be the root of most electrical issues...and I wonder if it could be mucking with the PCCM+ too.
Apologies for the long radio silence, only now I was able to focus on the car again.
Regarding your question, if it is located on the back of the car I don't think I have it.
Either way, after following the instructions of
@iso
I was able to successfully connect the adapter cable and my complaints have now been addressed.
Thank you for all the help
@ZuffenZeus
and
@iso
!
Can you please just recap what you did? I'm sorry but I've lost track of this thread.
Can you give us a quick recap of what your issue was and what you did to fix it?
Hi All -
Would really appreciate some pointers. I installed my PCCM+ a while back in my '02 C4S (non-MOST) and it seemed to work well, despite the slight white noise. The car's alarm would go off periodically, so I unplugged the alarm horn (don't judge me) and attributed this to the sensitive motion sensor in the garage I park in. This worked well for the last ~9 months, but after a couple recent dead batteries I took it up to my local Indy to run codes - the results were Radio Contact codes. After reading many threads, I suspect the car thinks the radio is being stolen every night! Note, when I lock the doors the lights double-flash and the red LED dash alarm beeps twice fast.
I believe this to be due to issues with the grounding, but I defer to the experts here. It's plugged into the pre-set socket on the PCCM.
Would pulling it out and grounding to the frame of the PCCM be better? Or adding another ground?
Should I look into grounding the frunk amp (which I have not made any aftermarket modifications to)?
Anything else?
Thanks in advance!
There's an alarm trigger wire that usually connects to the radio support frame and grounds out when the radio is absent. You'll need to isolate this wire (brown/blue if remember correctly, right angle quick disconnect terminal).
See photo here.

https://www.renntech.org/topic/46106...alarm-contact/
Thank you
@jhomer
, that was extraordinarily helpful; will give this a shot today!
Provided this solves it, will the alarm system reset itself with a simple lock/unlock or will I need to clear codes at my Indy?
As a follow up - I taped off the alarm trigger but still seem to get double flash headlights at lock & double blinking red LED dash light, making me think the issue still persists. Would I need to do anything else particular to reset?
Has anyone had any actual luck with getting their PCCM+ firmware updated? I am tired of my trip and clock issues on my 04 C4S. My PIWIS III is not an online version so any updates would have to be supplied via a dealer's PIWIS or SD card etc. I can't find any info of an actual firmware update. You would think it could just be emailed to someone then passed around.

Not yet and I wrote a little rant about the situation in another thread on this topic
I'm testing a workaround currently to see if it helps cure the odometer reset. My car has the Bose / MOST system for clarity... If you go to settings and hold the Volume selection for a few seconds you will see a new menu like this:
It should have the setting changed to CAN so that the radio can communicate with the gauge cluster and other Can Bus functions. Since the error is in the communication protocol and a bug sends a signal that causes the odometer reset, I changed the setting back to AMP. So far I'm at 58 miles with no resets but need more to see if it worked. The downside is that you lose the buttons lighting up when you turn the lights on and the radio must be turned on and off manually aka won't turn on and off with ignition.
If this ends up working I'd like to see if the CAN Bus plug on the back of the radio has a specific wire that connects to the gauge cluster and remove that pin only. In theory that should prevent the buggy signal being sent to the gauge cluster and should allow me to switch back to CAN to regain the other functions (on/off and lighting). By switching to AMP, the unit has worked fine otherwise but this is specific to my car.
Has anyone tried to add the backup camera as with 997 PCCM+? I do have backup camera already in car (996TT 2000 without Bose with DSP amp) that I used with existing Alpine 2DIN unit that works. According to what I have found the same connector as with 997 model is present. I am certainly ready to try it out if no one did it yet. My unit should arrive next week and I have to wait for Fakra to RCA adapter and then I will try it out....
This is not definitive, but when I installed PCCM+ in my 996 last year, I did an exhaustive search of every 996-specific PCCM thread on here and a couple other forums (plus YouTube, etc). I seem to recall more than one post stating that the 996 PCCM+ is not/not compatible with a backup camera whatsoever (and a few had tried anyway and failed).
I believe it lacks some of the necessary internal hardware to make it happen even though the back has a similar external connector as the PCCM+ for the 997.
IMHO, either live without Backup Camera, wireless Carplay, etc. or purchase a "PCCM Clone" that supports it for a fraction of the price.
You Tube
100% correct, there are no video inputs on the version for the 996. Just wish the clone looked a little less, cheap AF and a little more substantive, even though the *official* pccm + unit is Chinese and severely handicap in its features (being nice)
I've used and installed all kinds of radios, both factory and aftermarket and I feel the current "PCCM clones" are pretty darn good and less problematic than the genuine PCCM+. Not perfect, but definitely a great option for people that want a factory OEM look with numerous features that the genuine PCCM+ doesn't have like wireless Carplay and backup camera support. Check out the PCCM clone thread on the 997 subforum some time. The 997 owners are buying them like hotcakes. The big frustration with the clones are the lack of an operations manual or installation instructions. The PCCM+ lacks the support for installation too as you've probably read. Both radios get bad press because of this and many of the problems could have been avoided with better technical support and installation instructions. A lot of the botched installs are because the owners lack the knowledge about CanBus, MOST-bus, wiring configurations, and adapting to the factory ISO connectors. Many start cutting things they don't know what they're cutting. This could be avoided by simply purchasing a shop manual with wiring schematics or by coming to the forum and asking for help BEFORE doing something stupid.
' When it all boils down, both the genuine and clone PCCM are both running Android OS with CarPlay or Android Auto. They're both made in China if that impacts your decision or not. The genuine unit is designed for easier integration into factory setups. If you have a non factory setup and the ISO connections cut off, then that's a BIG problem when using the PCCM+, whereas the PCCM clone supports ISO with a harness and has standard I/O with RCA connectors like most aftermarket radios. Therefore, if you're planning on adding amps, subs, etc, then aftermarket radio like the PCCM clone is the way to go, but if you have a factory system and want to modernize it with infotainment type system yet still maintain OEM components, then the genuine PCCM+ may be your best fit. If you want the same OE look and features for around $300, the PCCM clones are the ticket. However, if money is no object and you like to keep things "Porsche-pure", then $1300 will give you admission to that party.
Pick your poison.
have the pccm plus for the 996, its dog $hit, but OEM and says PORSCHE on it...but it sucks...the functionality is dog $hit...its 2020 (when it came out) and they cant add a reverse camera? FOR OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS? are you kidding me? and yes OEM but locked, not upgradable, just sucks....but yea it says PORSCHE on it.
which is what got me.....
Wow...dog $hit is a bit harsh given it does what is was designed to do effectively and looks (OEM) like it belongs, albeit at a premium price. It wasn't designed with backup camera or wireless car play, two features pointed to (rightfully, I might add) as a big miss on Porsche's part. That said, my experience actually using PCCM+ (SiriusXM, wired car play, Bluetooth, Nav) with stock Bose amp, speakers has been positive.
Admittedly, once I realized the PCCM+ is an Android unit I felt a bit foolish for buying it. That said, I still like it and the (IMO) slightly more refined appearance. I’m enjoying the vast improvement to the stock Bose/MOST system over the CDR23. I’ve added an adapter to have wireless CarPlay, it works smoothly and quickly. I’ve read elsewhere that the internals of the 997 unit are identical to the 996 unit. Could be a software change needed for camera functionality? Something I may dig into if I get the ambition.
The recent issues with PCCM+ that I'm having is the system only briefly recognises my iPhone before not recognising it.
Ie: I'll connect via the cable, the phone with do its 'beep' and the iPhone screen mirrors on the PCCM+ as usual. Then anytime from 1 second to 1 min it will disconnect and PCCM+ will report as if there's nothing connected.
Pulling the cable out and reinserting into the iPhone will randomly work but the same process. Mirror for a short period before appearing disconnected.
Argh.
I just got on this thread. did you find an update? what firmware are you running?
I just installed my PCCM+ and it's running v 1.0. sounds like there is an update but that you have to go to Porsche for it...I'm just in the process of setting that up as I have some glitches. I was trying to find a download online somewhere, but no luck
Let us know how it goes. I have not been able to find a new firmware file anywhere. The update is done directly from the PCCM unit itself by plugging in a miniSD card with the firmware. All dealers I reached out to have not been helpful, were clueless about it or wanted to charge a service fee to run diagnostics.
So I am planning to install PCCM+ Clone. I have a 2002 with BOSE not most I can not figure out which head unit I need to order. After reading through all the different post's I seem like my car doesn't need the can box or the Bose box can someone help me out?
Sorry not a 996 but same issues with the PCCM+.
I bought a 986S with Bose and the PCCM+ installed. I only drove it a few days before winter with a few restarts. I thought it was a wiring or installation issue so I took it all apart over winter to check but everything was solid. Now I’ve had it on the road a couple of days this spring and it keeps restarting as before. After reading the 911UK forum and since I do all my own servicing and only use the local OPCs for parts, I’m just going to go ahead and order the Aliexpress unit with canbus and MOST boxes. I would be totally pissed if I had bought this unit and installed it myself and received the kind of non support and service many are receiving from Porsche.
