Gert recommended cabriolet springs/shocks for the targa.

Just because you have coil overs, doesnt mean you have to run the car lower, on the contrary, you can run it at stock ride height if thats your thing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Another suspension thread!! Looking for the best DD + spirited driving suspension I can get. Would like a little more performance, so to me this seems like a great idea. Adjustable shocks and a little lower ride height. Pretty happy with the standard suspension, but wish it was a little more civilized on rough roads and not so easily upset. Also don't like the floating through long turns but I think just a little step up should do the trick. Was initially going to do Ohlins but saw some videos saying they were incredibly rough at highway speeds. Also have a monster lip on my driveway so can't go much lower. Thoughts on Carnewals ROW springs + Koni sport shocks kit? Thanks!
I'm running this on my targa. Like you I didn't want to go too low, but I did want to get rid of that bro-dozer front end height. The RoW M030 springs were the perfect thing for me. I also went with Koni Yellows; I would have gotten the Koni Actives but it was pandemic and spotty inventory so I took what was available. No regrets.
A lot of folks will tell you to go with coilovers. If you don't mind the setup foo they are a good option as well.
As you have all wheel drive and a soft top possibly nothing, and just getting stock to top condition is fine. I think you have most of a turbo suspension. There are just an incredible range of parts for you to customise your suspension such as reducing understeer, ride height, perceptions of response in an already sporty set up. At the extreme end the aftermarket could take you to a sportier than GT3 suspension - these are 2 wheel drive. it all costs money like every thing else. In Australia it rare for me to see another 996 in normal driving. In US you could see what modifications from stock, others have done, and whether you want that for yourself. A set of Konis, milder Bilsteins like the B6 or adjustable sways might be enough for you. Personal and subjective come to mind if you want to modify, and what purpose and goal do you modify for?
Nothing, really. Some folks, me included, don't like the stock front end height; the car just looks SO MUCH better with a bit of forward rake. Given that the suspension bits are 20+ years old at this point, one may as well look into options when refreshing it -- which it needs, low mileage or high.
I have the Koni Sports on mine with stock springs ( the springs have "self lowered" as much as I want for Daily Al. Driving after 190K miles) ..
The Koni Sports set to full soft are softer than the Koni Actives set to full stiff, no complaints here...
No, what I'm saying is that they have an "overlap" ....
The Sports have a stiffer range, than the Actives..which have a softer range......but you can have a softer ride with the sports set to soft, than the Actives set to stiff..
This is what Porschetech3 is saying
A is Koni Active range
B is Koni Sport range
For OP's use case the Koni Active are the ticket.
Joints, repair patches etc. on the road surface are absorbed as the bypass opens but body movement is reduced during cornering and braking/accelerating where it stays shut, so no floaty cornering.
I haven't had a lot of experience driving my 911 (which has stock suspension) yet, but I suspect that one big advantage of its stock ride height is less bumper rash. I frequently scrub my front bumper bottom on my 987 Boxster (even though I'm real careful). My friend, with a 996, never scrapes his front bumper.
This is awesome! Thanks for the great pic to explain. Yeah makes me think I'm going down the right track. Not to talk trash but was dead set on the Ohlins. Then drove a Polestar in PCola with the most God awful jarring ride at slow speeds. Dug in to see what the issue was and found out they come OEM with Ohlins. Totally put me off even though the highway speeds were great. I mean I know it's a totally different car with about a dump truck difference in weight but still. Also watched a video of a guy who complained about the same thing. For that price, if it wasn't epic I'd be pretty disappointed.
You can buy the Ohlins Road and Track kit without springs, then buy your own.
Ive devised a custom spring set which is nearing the end of its development.
With the softer spring rates, the Ohlins are in a different league to Konis, Bilsteins etc.
Just because you have coil overs, doesnt mean you have to run the car lower, on the contrary, you can run it at stock ride height if thats your thing.
^^^This^^^ just means they arent set up properly. Has nothing to do with OHLINS They make great shocks/struts. The same or similar can be said of any/most Coil Overs when set improperly
Reviving this thread. Are people generally happy with the Koni Sports? Ive installed them with some RoW springs and it just doesnt feel quite right to me.
I havent had an alignment done yet, maybe thats the problem. I used the Carnewal kit. Biggest concern was the lack of preload on the front springs when under full droop.
That's my combination too. No issues with preload and I've been happy with the setup. Full disclosure: my only basis for comparison in terms of 911's is my own worn out 100K mile original US spec suspension.
The preload thing makes me think something is amiss. I needed spring compressors to assemble both ends of the car.
What did you set the damping at? Ive been working through mine, started at full soft and right now Im 3/4 off a turn stiffer.
Anything less than that has turned out to be pretty bouncy as Im driving down the road. My only comparison is my OE suspension.
Trying to resolve the mystery behind the lack of preload at full droop and I cannot find a reference to what the Koni shocks from Carnewal are actually for. The part numbers dont pull up anywhere. Any ideas where else to look?

Both Koni NA and the Koni UK website appear as if Koni does not actually make the front struts in their Sport series. I interestingly enough, they say the rears in the UK are the same part number as the rears in North America.
I assembled everything else in order with new Porsche or OEM parts, minus the washer in the diagram below (#2) because that seems to have been built into the Koni setup. Carnewal confirmed to not use that washer.
Im just coming to the conclusion that this strut/spring combo from Carnewal isnt actually compatible. I do find front struts in their catalogue for other models, such as
@wdb
s Targa, so maybe thats the difference.
I turned the fronts up almost immediately and then again later on. It was quite some time ago but I think I'm at 50% of full range. I did the rears after driving the car for a few months; 25% is my best recollection.
Gert recommended cabriolet springs/shocks for the targa. The weights are very similar. I put cabriolet RoW M030 sway bars on as well.
