This is not a probability of success.

Could be suspension bushes, but I had something similar and it turned out to be an elongated hole where the strut is bolted to the lower suspension link.

I can hear mine with the window open over rough ground- easy test- slightly pull the handbrake, and if the rattle lessens, then thats what it is.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Purchased C4s (2003) a month ago and love it but am noticing a slight clattering noise that is almost certainly related to the suspension. You only get it on rippled roads or roads where there is bump after bump. For eg - speed bump; no problem but rippled road and its there. Problem is in Sheffield a good third of the roads are like this. My previous car 993 C4 was a harder ride but did not knock or clatter. Any ideas?

POST 2Original post

I have something similar, but from the front end (mine is a C2 though). Doesn't happen over a speed bump, but does when going down a small hole in the road and back up. Difficult to describe, sounds a bit like a stone is caught (which I don't believe there is) or like there's something slightly lose....bit rattly/clattery. I think it's the bushes and am going to take it to Camtune for their opinion (as I'm sure suspension, bushes, shocks and springs aren't covered under warranty).

POST 3Original post

Could be suspension bushes, but I had something similar and it turned out to be an elongated hole where the strut is bolted to the lower suspension link. I tightened up the bolt and it stopped (and hasn't recurred in 10,000 miles since) - worth a look at least.

POST 4Original post

What about the clamps holding the exhaust? Mine kind of does the same but only on severe bumpy roads or cobble stones...

POST 5Original post

Maybe heat shields? They corrode and start rattling around the PU area if they have not been replaced after some time.

POST 6Original post

Handbrake linkages a little loose? I can hear mine with the window open over rough ground- easy test- slightly pull the handbrake, and if the rattle lessens, then thats what it is.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Car booked in... and will mention your suggestions. Thanks - will report back with a solution when one is found!
