Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hapy Monday Everyone! I am just wondering if anyone can help me with the decibel level for an exhaust? I finally got my hands on my new fabspeed muffler bypass tips and OH MY LORD they are so so loud! I am convinced i am breaking the noise regulations and not just breaking them but smashing them! I fitted them yesterday, and they were increibly easy to fit (after i figured out what bolts to undone! That was a waste of 3 hours!) really can be discibed as easy on, easy off! They look awesome as well, the diameter of the tips are about 14 cms (which is about 4 cms bigger than the standard tips) and having the chrome pipes seem to come out from behind the number plate looks awesome! To be honest, i think i am going to take them off and put the mufflers back on this weekend as I went for about a 40 mile driver yesterday and there is no way you can have a conversation in the car. My missus is never going to be happy getting in it when it is this loud as everything vibrates and i actually felt a bit self-conscious where pulling away from lights. I felt so sorry for the horse and young rider i had to pass on a quiet country lane :S Def think i might have to whack them on ebay! You cant even try to drive it quietly. Anything over 2000 rpm and the whole car just barks and barks like a really angry dog! Has anyone else tried these bypass pipes? Is anyone actually living with them full time? Would be great to get anyone thoughts Thanks

POST 2Original post

I've got the bypass pipes and am very impressed over stock boxes. Give the car a nicer sound without it being intrusive (needed more so in a cab) £300 from the bay although i think they're a little more now. And you can also buy various diameter of pipe for more (or less) sound. If you're looking for something less intrusive these would definitely be the way to go. Stupid question but did you use some exhaust paste when fitting to make a seal between the pipes? Could be blowing which is why its making so much noise? Just a thought... cheers

POST 3Original post

Tim I think you've got the oettle style standard mufflers with a bypass pipe welded across the inlet and outlet. I have the same ones. flyingbanana sounds like he's removed the mufflers entireley and fitted the bypass pipes which are a peice of completely hollow stainless steel tubing. The bolt straight on to the cats out to the tips! With no mufflers/baffles it would be incredibly loud! They probably sound awsome for a while but you'd start attracting ASBOs in no time  flyingbanana how long does it take you to swap over? Can you chop and change depedning on your state of mind at the time?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Tim, You are absolutely right, i have completely removed the mufflers and bolted the bypass pipes directly onto the cat's and oh lord!!! I have actually taken some pictures and video's of before and after and will be posting them up on youtube this weekend, so i can email, post link of the video's if people are interested? Def sound wicked but after a while they make your head hurt! I dont drive the car that often, weekend's only, but dont want to be a yob driving around ruin everyone else's day! Just thought if i was to pop to the supermarket or something then it would be like a track car had entered the car park! Although i must say it was great driving through tunnels yesterday! Weekend Wonder, i am actually thinking about getting those mufflers that you have got. Did you get yours off ebay from some company in Germany? I actually emailed them today because i wanted to get an idea of how used they were, how many miles had been done on them. Tim, when i figured out how which bolts to remove, to jack the car up, rmoved the bolts and slide muffler out, it was about 10 minutes and i am not joking! I actually spent 7 hours trying to figure out how to remove it the day before when my dad pointed out i was removing the wrong bolts! D'oh! I would say that that in total to jack up the car on both sides and remove both mufflers and put them back on could be done within an hour. The issue i had was reusing the clamps, which were so rusted together, i had to dremel the bolts off! Now i have nice shiny bolts, if should take me no time at all, if i decide to remove the pipes and go back to stock, which i think i am going to have too because these are so so loud. You could def swap these over and over again, as said, I could now put my stock mufflers back on within an hour now, so if you fancied a weekend of noise then you absolutely could. Tim, are you using the oette style mufflers? £300 is obviously a lot of money but would these be road legal in terms of noise? I am 99.999% sure that my bypass pipes are way over the legal limit!

POST 5Original post

holy craparooney.... now i see why its so loud... blimey. are your ears not bleeding? ("pardon".. boom boom :floor: )

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

exactly! It really does make my ears bleed and there is no way you can drive with these on full time. As mentioned in my previous post, i will post some pictures and youtube links to those that are interested on the weekend. Driving with these on is not fair on the passenger sitting next to you and also on the general public! Scared that i will give some old granny a heart attack through my local town! Think i am going to get the sports muffler from that German guy as have heard good things from him and also at £300 a bargain compared to PSE! Might have to drive through some more tunnels though before i take them off! uh:

POST 7Original post

Oettle do mufflers on ebay, and Sonnenfeld (spelling?) also do some. Sonnenfeld will do you 102db if you ask (otherwise you get 105db from them & Oettle) Regarding the noise, the police now have an S-59 (or something like that) which is basically an on the spot fine for public nuisance, aka being a pikey. My mate got one in his ferrari on the kings rd the other day (has a ridiculous exhaust), for being a pikey.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Wagonface, Is 105db then illegal? I want my 911 to be throaty and sporty but obviously i want to remain on the good side of the law!

POST 9Original post

A few people on here have the Oettle 105's and dont mention any problems. I am 99.99% sure you will be fine with 105dB on the road. To be 100% safe, I would suggest you: 1) call local MOT centre and ask the legal limit 2) Call OPC and ask the level of a standard exhaust, and a PSE PS - if you want to track your car then 105dB can be a problem at a few circuits.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have def heard lots of good things about them, so i think as soon as i get paid i am going to purchase them! One thing that is for certain is that i cannot drive around with just the bypass pipes on otherwise i will need to get new ears by christmas!

POST 11Original post

If you can get a used set of Agency Power, DesignTek or similar stainless steel mufflers for around the same cost I'd strongly recommend that route. - The sound is a class beyond the Oettle bypass pipe mufflers. - The welded on bypass pipes are prone to falling off over time (due to welding different materials together) - The flow is no longer going through the muffler in the way Porsche intended, so the internal baffles may distort and start to make strange noises over time. Remember the Oettle ones are also 'used' as they refurb old mufflers and convert them. The stainless steel (i.e. AP) options would last a life time but also note they'd add a lot of weight at the back of the car (not neccessarily where you want it). I have the Oettle style mufflers and am happy enough with them but you should explore the options first. Happy driving with raspby sounds

POST 12Original post

I would agree completely with the above. I have Agency Power mufflers on mine and although they are quite a bit louder and deeper than standard, there is no drone at all and the performance gain was very noticeable.
