Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Personally I prefer the old tried and tested visual check on a dipstick.
Leading evidence: 'Test visual' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check on a dipstick' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

if in any doubt always check via dipstick when cold and always wipe and re-check

Suggestion
Checking via the dipstick on the 996 is notoriously inconsistent (note, not the same as inaccurate).

Suggestion
When the engine is running warmer than normal, it's common for the oil gauge to read 1 bar higher than previous: this is simply to do with oil expansion at higher temps.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
Think I went a bit over the top with my oil top up. Its really strange the interior oil level shows it one bar above what the oil should be other times it reads correctly.
Meanwhile the dipstick reads below the maximum mark, also may have caused my RMS to start leaking it was done 10 months and 4K miles ago.
If i have already let some engine oil out, any pointers or advice appreciated....over than not being crazy with the oil
Personally I prefer the old tried and tested visual check on a dipstick. The electronic oil level indicator on my 997 does my head in.
Silly question and I feel stupid asking it but you are on a level surface aren't you, and make sure the car has been stood for a while so the pan is full of oil.
I would use the dipstick as a better form of checking.
as above. if in any doubt always check via dipstick when cold and always wipe and re-check
also thought the line on the dash guage was the minimum oil level and guage should have all bars lit?
On the 996, the electronic oil gauge is accurate. Checking via the dipstick on the 996 is notoriously inconsistent (note, not the same as inaccurate).
At normal operating temp, the 996 oil gauge should show 1-2 bars below max. When the engine is running warmer than normal, it's common for the oil gauge to read 1 bar higher than previous: this is simply to do with oil expansion at higher temps. This is because the gauge happens to be sensitive enough to monitor oil expansion.
It's the opposite on the 993: never trust the oil gauge and only test the dipstick!
when I turn my ignition on and it goes through the oil level check it always shows all bars lit and I have just recently had an OPC minor service and it was reading the same afterwards so I was thinking that was the norm, I did'nt at first as the lines at the left were indicating the max and the min. I haven't owened the car long and it was reading the same before the service.
I think from what has been said here I'll revert to the dipstick!!!!!!
Sorry to hijack the thread but can someone confirm that the 996 TT doesnt have a dipstick!
I have rang OPC's and the service dept's didnt have the definitive answer! They had to check!! Im sure it doesnt....Ive looked and looked, but can someone just tell me I am not going mad?
I'm debating whether filling with oil to the max and driving hard can cause the RMS/IMS to go. Is it true that you get the car back from the OPC with the oil level well under max intentionally?
RMS has nothing to do with how high the oil is filled or not. RMS is an issue of an irregularly shaped circular metallic seal
expected
to make a perfect seal between 2 separately cast halves of the crankcase where there is a huge amount of twist/force. Surprise surprise, the RMS rarely makes a perfect seal (either fitting or shape design or combination of both) and oil leaks out. But it has nothing to do with how much oil is in the car.
A car may come back from the OPC with less oil than it should because they're being pikeys and ripping you off as a customer whilst charging you £££/L.
Maxie - cheque is in the post :hand:
From past experience I found it best to put in no more than 0.75 litre and then check level again - would usually take another 0.25 litre (seem to recall that min to max is 1.5 litre)
993 TT: used approx 1 litre per 1,000 miles
996 TT: uses a lot less oil than the 993 and I relied on management system to tell me when level was low
Personally I never used dipstick - there was one on the 993 TT but never looked to see if there was one on 996 TT
