There isn't any documentation showing the AOS has been replaced, and from all the threads I saw when you were originally floating the idea, I assure you I don't want to have it blow up at this stage of the game.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently purchased a '99 Coupe and discovered it was 'originally' purchased on June '98. How cool is that? On the flip side ChatGPT says there was 0 purchased that month and deliveries only began in October of '98. I've attached a picture of my service manual front page that states otherwise and would appreciate any feedback to it's veracity. I know of nowhere else better to ask about it than here.

POST 2Original post

@dglenn99 congrats on the purchase! some were delivered as early as 1997. Most US started in Jan 1998. You can the most recently updated early car registry in this thread, add your to the list! https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...m_content=post

POST 3Original post

A Guards red with savanna interior sounds nice, post a picture or two good luck with the early 996 Rich

POST 4Original post

The 99s were sold pretty early in 1998. Mine is a 2/98 build that was sold at Brumos Porsche in April 1998.

[QUOTE=On the flip side ChatGPT says there was 0 purchased that month and deliveries only began in October of '98./QUOTE] LOL! The power of AI at it's best! Seriously though...'99 MY cars for the NA market started shipping in January of 1998, so there were plently delivered in June of '98. What does the build date sticker show for the production month?

POST 6Original post

Want to hear something funny ?? I have had a 99 6-speed Cab for 7 years ( bought it for my Son to play with on the Track and gather Data for UAOS/UIDS).......It is no where near stock, it has been lowered, FabSpeed X-pipe and mufflers, Carrera Aero Wing With Side Skirts and Spats and a .2 GT3 front bumper ( aftermarket).. Has no ambers lenses ...... I was poking around in PPN today and punched in the VIN and it said it was a 1998 model ??? lol... I checked the build data and it is a 6/98 build......I had no idea ( or maybe never cared ??) .. I know the "early builds" are talked about as special, but honestly my Sally ( late 99 build) is a much nicer car , mainly due to all the Options like Full Leather, Silver Gauge Faces Lots of power options and "X" Options ...

Since you asked: Before and after photos. Originally it had the clear coat just peeling off the car when I bought it. Interior was spotless, free from stains or tears. 92k miles, IMS has replaced, the engine has been well maintained without any hint of smoke on startup or operation. It still plants you in the seat when the right foot is properly applied. Last set of sports cars I've had were a '79 RX-7, '64 Triumph TR-4, and a '66 MG Midget prior to getting married. Now retired, kids grown to men, it was time to saddle back up and get another one. I love it. My wife questions my sanity since I spent more on completely repainting it than I bought it for :-) Bottom line, I love it. It's the most thrilling car I've ever had the pleasure to drive. I intend to take into the Blue Ridge Mountains this weekend despite the currently ghastly price of gas or weather. This summer I plan to drive it to Alaska for a relatives memorial, then down to the San Diego area to see my grandkids and spend a couple weeks driving my daughter in law nuts while the grandkids do the same to me. I plan on getting the UAOS before I go that far so I don't run into any surprises. The only downside is that is a Triptronic instead of a manual. Still I managed to get 28 mpg driving it home from Virginia and average around 21 mpg around town.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Interesting that. All my prior experience has been with new models appearing in the fall before the start on the model year, so it's a bit unusual. However considering Porsche needed to make some cash quickly during that time frame, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I don't have any idea where to find the actual build date. Now the car is out of the shop I can do some searching with the product on hand. Bought ii in mid September '25, put in the shop to be repainted mid October '25 and only got it back Friday of last week. So I haven't really spent the the time to begin delving into the nuances yet. Note: I plan on getting your UAOS soon. There isn't any documentation showing the AOS has been replaced, and from all the threads I saw when you were originally floating the idea, I assure you I don't want to have it blow up at this stage of the game.

US Federal Regulations allow Auto Manufacturers to release new models as early as Jan. 2 of the preceding year.....ie ... A 1999 Carrera can be released in the US on Jan. 2 1998 .. The same car release on Jan. 2 1998 in the ROW will be designated as a 1998 ........whereas in the US it will be/can be a 1999 ....... Most MFG's will wait till Fall to release the next year model if only mild updates, but if it is a complete redesign, like the case of the 996, they will release much earlier ... It ll about Marketing ...ie $$$$ ....

Yes, most manufacturers wait until Aug/Sept to launch a new model year but as Porschetech3 states the law allows for earlier releases. Also, Porsche NA was still delivering 1998 993's early in the year and probably didn't want to confuse buyers with two completely different 911's marketed as the same model year!
