Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It seems that weeks before I purchased it (6 years ago) it had the switch replaced - invoice itemised it as 'Identify auto box fault - replace multi switch'.
Leading evidence: 'Replace invoice itemised it as 'identify auto box fault' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fault codes in the dme please' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Sometimes just replacing a component is quicker and indeed cheaper than testing an item to prove or disprove whats at fault .

Suggestion
We basically replace an item as its cheaper to prove its the fault than spend time trying to test to be able to move on in fault finding ..

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys I've had an error code come up on my gen 1 '98 996 just recently and having sat over winter. The drive light and 4th gear dash light flashed simultaneously which I understand is gear box limp mode. The code is 35 P0706 and given as upswitch/down shift switch. I cleared it but after a few miles it's back. The check engine light also came on the second time it occurred but the only fault showing is the one given so I'm assuming the error code tripped the engine warning light? Any ideas as to how I remedy this please?
I don't personally know the answer, but watching with interest, you could try unplugging the multi plug to the transmission,( located around about, underneath the car in line with the rear of the drivers seat) wd40 it and plug back in, aka dirty contacts/connection, that's all I can think of :dont know:
Check the fault codes in the DME please ..
If the tip switch on the steering wheel had shorted or was giving a constant up / down signal then i would expect a fault code .. i'm not sure if it would put it in limp mode though .. i would lean towards it wouldn't ..
DME though is the next step .
I just looked up the fault code for this .. i probably should have done that before typing ..
Whilst i could just delete and start again .. i always feel thats its best to have my thoughts even if wrong posted ....
Fault code info below .. best guess .. the multi function switch on the gearbox
Link here for a description ..

Get it confirmed before just replacing it please .. i can only make an educated guess at best .
Hi deMort since you replied I've had a look at the history received with the car. It seems that weeks before I purchased it (6 years ago) it had the switch replaced - invoice itemised it as 'Identify auto box fault - replace multi switch'. Are you aware if these switches are often problematic? The other thing I didn't mention is that the car lunges forward when put into reverse or drive. Is that likely to be a symptom of the switch malfunction?

These switches can be problematic .. there is nothing to say this is the actual fault as per the fault code .. it can be other things ..
This multi function switch on the gear box though.... they have about 5 separate micro switches in it .. any of which can stick .. as such its the first point of call in this situation .
The issue .. the gear lever reports one position .. this switch reports another .. that is what we are trying to find .. which one is at fault .
To just replace it without testing .. i cant say .. wiring pin outs of every wire and what signal should be on it takes a lot of time ..
Sometimes just replacing a component is quicker and indeed cheaper than testing an item to prove or disprove whats at fault .
We basically replace an item as its cheaper to prove its the fault than spend time trying to test to be able to move on in fault finding .. the cheaper option is best even if it means throwing an item on a car .. not something i approve of but cost is the factor here ..
If replacing an item is cheaper than trying to test .. then replace .
Obviously .. DIY and you have the time i dont have .. i would need to investigate a test procedure for that if there is one to be able to answer how to test this switch .
let me know there and ill have a look at some wiring diagrams .
I will have to refer you back to the fault code instructions .. it can be many things and not necessarily this item .
lunging forwards when in reverse .. no its not .. one thing at a time though i feel .
