Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I recently did a similar swap, G96.30 (original) and replaced with a G96.31.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyone know what exactly the differences between the G96.00 vs the G96.01 are besides upgraded synchronizers and different gearing?
both have the exact same bell-housing and there doesn't seem be any differences between the speed sensors. Porsche lists two different parts numbers. I'm thinking of swapping the g96.01 from a 03 into a 99 911 with the g96.00
Does the clutch have to be replaced?
I can add a few things here that might be of interest.
The G96.00 is actually shorter than the G96.01, the same goes for the 4wd versions as well.
There were some changes to the clutch between there two as well. I think there was some upgrades made in the clutch release components.
In terms of synchronizers, there are no differences between the 99-01 and the 02-05 gearboxes. They both use three piece synchronizers in 1st and 2nd, and one piece in 3-r. There are no bearing differences that I can think of between these two gearboxes, and the actual gearing ratios are the same.
There is a taller ring and pinion available for these now, but this tends to be best for highly modified cars only, as it is quite a bit taller at 3.00 ratio.
Both of these gearboxes suffer from the same 2nd gear pop-out issue, so it would be a good idea to have a modified detent installed to help the operating sleeve engage the gear better.
On the plus side, you can purchase a brand new unit these days, for the same cost of a rebuild, sometime less. As far as I know though this would only be for the G96.01 which is 2 inches longer in the tail. I am not sure if there is a installation issue between these or not. I have heard from some that they are interchangeable and others have said not with out some additional parts.
I hope that this is somewhat helpful. I am around these gearboxes practically every day it seems.
Feel free to call me if you have any specific questions, I am always around to be of help.

I recently did a similar swap, G96.30 (original) and replaced with a G96.31. Direct plug-n-play MINUS the front prop shaft (for C4 cars). I ended up using a 997 TT prop shaft as it was (a) immediately available and (b) was exactly 2" shorter than the prop shaft from the G96.30 setup.
