Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Fortunately it's a secure patch of ground and I don't desperately need the use of the car.
Leading evidence: 'Use of the car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use of the car' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm interested in understanding how the 4WD system works, particulaly as I may know of a C4S stuck on a muddy patch of ground - I'd rather not elaborate but there are mitigating circumstances
The front wheels don't seem to have drive at all, whilst the rears are spinning. My first thought was that maybe the previous owner had bought a C4S badge.
Second thought is that the 4WD system is similar to the TT (Audi) I used to have, semi-permanent, except in this case RWD most of the time. In any case I'd have thought once the rears start to spin the fronts would try and follow suit. Tried with PSM off and no different.
Any advice, please. Driving across grass in torrential rain has already been noted.
OK, what should happen is that in normal circumstances about 95% of drive goes to the rear wheels, and about 5% to the front. In the event of a loss of traction under power at the rear wheels, it can transfer up to 40% of the torque to the front wheels.
Easy way to check if the 4WD system is working in your case (or if fitted at all) is to put it in first gear and see which wheels are turning... If neither front wheel is turning, then your 4wd system is knackered (or not fitted)
Incidentally, if it has a space-saver wheel mounted vertically in the front compartment, with the tyre inflated, it ain't a C4 :hand:
Would this car be at Silverstone by any chance? If so send me a PM and I'll come and pull you out... (I'm 5 mins away)
Thanks, in first it's difficult to tell but there doesn't seem to be much pull, I'll ask a willing volunteer to check. No space saver mounted vertically, and tiny front compartment so I assume there's a 4WD mechanism hiding under the rest of the space.
Unfortunately not at Silverstone, thanks for the offer, I'm in Durham. Fortunately it's a secure patch of ground and I don't desperately need the use of the car. Just waiting on a friend with a 4x4 and a strong rope to get back to me. Incidentally if being pulled from the rear, where's the best place to secure a rope to?
