I wouldn't classify it as a common failure, but they do fail and my understanding is that it is a royal PITA to replace with the motor in the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am going to be replacing my starter, air/oil separator and water pump. I am going to drop the engine out to do this also just to take a look at everything and clean it up. I will pull the trans off to take a look at the rear main seal and IMS seal. What else would you do with the engine already out? I don't want to be doing this again for a while...

POST 2Original post

Oil temp sensor, plugs/coils, coolant pipes and tank, check all the wiring for brittleness/abrasion, basically check/replace any plastic or rubber bit that isn't readily accessible when the engine is in the car.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ill definitely add the coolant tank to the list and look over all the hoses. I am also going to do the plugs but i don't think I'm going to do the coils that are working OK. Is the oil temp sensor something that is known for failing? If so it looks cheap enough to just throw one in.

If you are doing the plugs, do the coils. Search and you'll find plenty of stories of people just replacing the plugs only to have to come back after a short period and do the coils too. They are well known to crack and cause misfires. If you've already had to pull them off to replace the plugs what good reason is there to not replace them??? Maybe it's the oil pressure sensor rather than temp? I could have misspoke. I wouldn't classify it as a common failure, but they do fail and my understanding is that it is a royal PITA to replace with the motor in the car.

POST 6Original post

Yeap. When ettil's was apart for all its work a couple summers ago I opted to skip the plugs/coils as a $10k bill was bad enough. 3 months later it was back for plugs and coils Luckily one of the reasons for skipping them the first time around is that none of the other work saved any labor from the coil/plug job, so it was just an annoyance rather than wasted money on a partial job.

Slave cylinder for the clutch. I just put a new engine in, and that damn thing went before I even had the wheels back on.

POST 9Original post

Coils are pretty cheap from the right source (i.e. Not the dealership.)

POST 10Original post

Coolant expansion tank will be a lot easier to swap with the engine out.

Iv heard something about that before. I was going to leave the actual bearing alone but I can remove just the shield? Id obviously do the flange seals if i was in there. Cheap enough I can do that to. But isn't that fairly easy to do on its own? Recommendations? That is on the list. Are any aftermarket brand OK or would you go OEM with this? Iv seen a huge range of prices on these.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 14021041

Yes, but since you are dropping the trans and will need to remove the slave anyway, might as well just replace it.
