Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I just replaced discs and pads all round on my 99 996 C4, and the difference in performance is amazing.

Once I had changed, even after some initial bedding in, they were much better than before - much more solid pedal, and confidence inspiring deceleration.

I'm not in a great hurry to do anything just yet so just weighing up my options.....I figured if I'm changing the disks I might go for a caliper change as well....all depends on cost at the end of the day....I just wonders if the red calipers went onto the 318mm disks or if the Turbo and S model cars had bigger disks....??

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Advice please......my front disks and pads are nearly on the limits....disks are 25.9mm and 26.1mm (min thickness is 26) and the pads are down to 4mm....
I'm possibly looking to upgrade to a set of the "big red" calipers the S model cars and turbos have.....I really like the look of them. Has anyone done this? i.e do the red calipers fit standard sized 996 C2 disks and are these calipers different from the Turbo ones? I'm happy to do the work myself and am just looking at options if a set of "reds" comes up on E-bay.....
Cheers

My old discs were quite corroded on the inside, but I had got used to the performance. NB discs can look fine on the outside, and be totally shot on the inside

So I agree with GD, save your money - get some std discs and pads (I got mine from Design911) and paint your calipers red.
Thanks

I'm told the Turbo and S model brakes don't fit the standard Carrera hubs.........so that's the end of that!
I will just have to fit new disks and pads!
Well the Turbo and 4S discs are bigger and thicker. The S uses a ceramic at 350mm.
The hub assembly on these cars is different to the the 2wd cars so it might require some hub spacers to get it to fit properly.
What brakes/calipers do the GT3's have? Can these be retro-fitted to a normal C2/C4?
A friend of mine has a 00W C2, and he has red calipers on his car with the same wheels as mine (Sport classic's II). Just wondering if he has upgraded brakes...or just different colour calipers..
Taran :?:
The Mk1 has the same calipers but different discs (same size though) to the 4S and turbo, the Mk2 has considerably larger 6pots and 350mm discs.
Your friend may just have Boxster S bits
or a big pot of red paint.
Thanks for the responses......does anyone know the capacity of the braking system? Reason is I've got a litre of SRF lying about from my race bike and might put it in.......unfortunately my car came without a manual and I haven't got hold of one yet...
To completely flush and refill? I spoke to quite a few different garges and they all said the same, even spoke to a tech guy at Reading who all confirmed to supply 3 litres as the system needs to be completely void of previous fluid. I actually gave them 5 litres and thankfully got 2 back!
You believed the Porsche technician? When you are doing a standard job with Porsche OEM ATE fluid at £5-6 a litre, flushing 3l is fine, but do the same with SRF is money down the drain.
Seriously Stuart, you can comfortably do it with 1-1.5l with a power bleeder, so you've got plenty for next time
