Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi 911 fellows, I have 996 engine on a Boxster and can't figure out the reason for the smoke with some fuel smell coming from the Bank 1 of the engine (2003 996). You can see/hear on the video( https://youtu.be/VAER9S4qejg ) also tapping sound from the exhaust and it does feel like it is pushing exhaust gases out more erratic and not as smooth as other side. Car has not been driven for about 2 years (race car). When tried to take it to the track recently, I noticed the smoke, checked the plugs-ok, borescope-ok, compression-ok. Installed new plugs and oem injectors on the Bank 1, the same thing. Should I give the "Italian tune up" or may catch on fire?

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone with solution to the problem?

POST 3Original post

Check the fuel trims using a tool like the Durametric. This could tell you if the computer is commanding more or less fuel be sent. Do you have any CEL error codes. Are the spark plug coils the originals? If you're smelling fuel in the exhaust I'm surprised one or more spark plugs didn't look wet or black. How is the gas mileage (mpg)? Has it changed recently? Do you smell gas even after the car has sat for awhile (hours) and is not running?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the reply. Will try to get fuel ratio with Durametric. No CEL-don't have dash board. Coils has been replaced, spark plugs were not the worst I have seen, some darkening but not a glossy black. The mileage- it is race car, have no idea. Don't smell gas when not driving, just during, mainly when sniffing smoking tailpipe. One thing I noticed, excessive carbon build up on the #2 piston, more than #1 and #3 but the spark plug looked much cleaner on #2. I wonder if it is the reson for uneven exhaust note from that Bank.

POST 5Original post

Is it possible that the injectors might be stuck open? I bought a used engine that sat for a while and had an injector problem. Had to send them out for cleaning to get them working properly. Oil in the exhaust isn’t uncommon after sitting for that long. It may take some running to clear up. Try tapping the injectors while it’s running. If that doesn’t work they may need to be removed and cleaned.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Injectors just replaced with new (not rebuild) Bosch injectors (3) on the Bank 1 side.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am just not sure if the car will not catch on fire due to that fuel smell but feel like it may benefit from good hard high RPM drive, at least few minutes on the track.

POST 8Original post

I'd carry a fire extinguisher. I think the car would be ok if you're not smelling or seeing gasoline in the engine compartment or underneath the car by the engine, fuel tank, or fuel lines, whether the engine is running or not. I might do one more thing - on cold engine, run the engine until a minute or so after high idle comes down. Immediately pull the plugs and look for a fuel soaked plug. But even a positive finding won't cause a car fire in my opinion. Maybe just narrow down the source. For a car fire, you need some visible gasoline, coming from a relatively sustained source. You would definitely smell or see something. Of course, be careful, observant. Trust your instinct. Don't drive it if you feel it's unsafe. Get an expert opinion.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great advice. Appreciate it.

Another thing you might consider is pulling an oil sample and doing a used oil analysis (looking for fuel dilution (directly, e.g., SpeeDiagnostix)).
