Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Ii've ridden fuel injected bikes for years and this was always disregarded as a myth by the biking community.....when you change a bikes exhaust you usually have to re-map to get bike running sweetly.

Does the fuel injection system automatically compensate for the introduction of a free breathing exhaust/change of induction system etc?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all. I'm fitting Fabspeed exhaust bypass pipes to my 996 C2 and wondered if anyone could answer the following? Does the fuel injection system automatically compensate for the introduction of a free breathing exhaust/change of induction system etc? Ii've ridden fuel injected bikes for years and this was always disregarded as a myth by the biking community.....when you change a bikes exhaust you usually have to re-map to get bike running sweetly. I read somewhere recently (can't remember where) that the 996's electronics would automatically adjust to a change after a couple of hours driving (i'm guessing via the system's sensors detecting a change in gas flow?)........ Does anyone have the definitative on this as I've always thought "self adapting" fuel injection was total bollocks to be honest... Thanks

POST 2Original post

the fuel system adjusts for the fuel RON Rating but although the exhaust IIRC deals with the output it does or can have an impact but not sure i.e. if you Cat was worn out would the engine timings adjust ?

POST 3Original post

Hi Jim, Are you bypassing the muffler or cats? In general the ECU will adust accordingly to fuel/air and driving style, If you are undertaking the Cat bypass AFAIK there are sensors in the cats (lambda) that will also effect the engine management - although early (98/99) 996's don't have the lambda's so if your car is an early variant then no need to worry on this front, would suggest a custom map to take advantage of any new hardware as well at some stage. Also be aware that if it is a cat bypass you are undertaking make sure you have a freindly MOT station in your pocket... :bandit: - Simon

No cats stay in place......just the mufflers going
