Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
Well, it was the immobiliser, but I've never heard of it 'locking up' like that.
Leading evidence: 'immobiliser' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'immobiliser' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check done' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

RAC turned up today and I explained the situation..two minutes later and with the first turn of the key a gorgeous purrr from my baby.Turns out the immobiliser had kicked in for some reason and he simply disconnected the battery and reconnected and Ive got my baby back.thanks very much to all who posted helpful replies.

Suspected cause
Judging by the fact that the ignition comes on, but it doesn't crank, I would suspect either the ignition switch, or the immobiliser.

Suggestion
The snag is that you really need to get a diagnostic check done with a Porsche system tester.

Suggestion
The ignition switch is fairly cheap to replace (but not at an OPC), but the immobiliser is part of the alarm control module, which costs about £220, but you would also need new keys and programming.

I believe the ones they use might be a more general code reader, which would be fine if you want to read the engine DME, but not some of the specific Porsche modules.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello, this is my first post and I am asking for a little help please.I have had a 996 C2 since it was 18 months old..its been amazing..I am totally inept at the mechanics of this car I simply drive it and it has been fantastic for all these years....only had to buy new tyres and a bit of balancing twice in all that time.THEN typically just before Xmas and at a time when I am feeling the financial crisis I stopped outside my house and when I went to start the car NOTHING ! The electrics all work but the car doesnt turn over........had to push it up the drive in to the garage and there it sits.......as I said money is tight so I unfortunately can not ring Porsche for fear of a bill I can not pay at the moment so I am asking for any help of identifying the problem....thanks for reading.
Welcome Glenn! Shame the circumstances aren't better.
I would recommend finding a local independent specialist who will come out and plug in their diagnostic computer. Judging by the fact that the ignition comes on, but it doesn't crank, I would suspect either the ignition switch, or the immobiliser. The ignition switch is fairly cheap to replace (but not at an OPC), but the immobiliser is part of the alarm control module, which costs about £220, but you would also need new keys and programming.
I'm assuming it's a coupe. If it's a cabriolet, check under the passenger seat and see if the carpet is wet. If so, then I expect the alarm control module is soaked, as that's where it is located.
Thanks.....I do not think its low battery as I had Porsche do something to my Cigarette lighter so that its always on a trickle charger.....and after a few weeks of standing on charge I tried again and its still the same scenario ! I will wait a few days and if nobody comes through with a miracle cure I will go with Richards suugestion and contact an independant porsche specialist and ask them to come and plug in the diagnostic kit....would anyone have an idea of the charge for this sort of visit ? Thanks all.
Do you not have Green flag, etc cover?
Join now if not wait a few days then give them a call and say your car won't start!! [

Are you near Stratford upon Avon?
I know a top independant!
Hello...I am a member of the RAC who claim to be Porsche specialists...anyway they turned up kicked the tyres and said they couldnt do anything..literally !
Did they not plug in their diagnostics to your car? They should have done that, then at least you would have had an error code logged which we could have helped you decipher/ work out the best plan of action.
No they literally looked at the car and said they didnt know how to get at it..........then strangely told me they were authorised by Porsche ? Do you think I should call them and tell them to come round with a diagnostic tool ? Do they have them ? Thanks.
Porsche use the RAC for their breakdown cover as part of the warranty. In my experience, they do a great job. I had a check engine light appear on my previous car, the RAC turned up quickly, and plugged their diagnotic computer into my car. I'd ask them to do the same on yours. Walking away scratching his head is unacceptable IMO.
The snag is that you really need to get a diagnostic check done with a Porsche system tester. If the problem is in the immobiliser, then there is a good chance that the tool that the RAC use won't read that control module. I believe the ones they use might be a more general code reader, which would be fine if you want to read the engine DME, but not some of the specific Porsche modules.
Whereabouts are you located? If you are anywhere near me (Maidenhead, Berks) let me know as I could help.
