Suggestion

As for oil remaining in the engine, I would imagine this is why Porsche constantly state they recommend Mobil 1, as it is replacing the oil from the same refiner and make-up (as well as some commercial arrangement of course).

I would tend to stick to the manufacturers recomended oil spec as they have designed their engine to run with that type of oil.

Suggestion

As far as I am aware engine oil seals will be designed to be used with a mineral oil or a synthetic oil and will deteriorate if the wrong oil is used, so I would be very wary about using a different type of oil.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi there, Porsche put some Mobile 1 0/40 I think when they changed the service now - I'm buying some extra oil ( Im going on a month trip around europe ) and my question is : is it ok to top up with a different oil, with different viscosity ? for example a Total 10/50 ? Or I should stick to the 0/40 ? Would harm the engine to mix different viscosity oils ? Cheers

POST 2Original post

Mixing oils won't harm the engine but using a viscosity that is not approved could. I suggest you look at the FAQ for the approved oils and use that as a guide.

POST 3Original post

I believe you need to stick with 0-40 (or 5-40). x-50 oils are not approved in the 996 engine, due to their higher viscosity (weight). Note that the viscosity levels could potentially be different if you blend vendor oil (due to slightly different make up), but this wouldn't cause any issue as long as the oil is approved by the manufacturer. Cheers, GD

POST 4Original post

I would stick with what's in there already, or at the very least the same viscosity.

POST 5Original post

Hmmm, I wouldnt mix, only in an emergency. mixing 0 and 5 doesnt yield 2.5. Its a bit like mixing oil and water and if you stir it they see oil bubbles in the water as one is thicker than the other. Not an engineer but thats my gut feeling.

POST 6Original post

I wouldn't risk it - stick to Mobil 1 (or at least the same viscosity)

POST 7Original post

personally i wouldn't even use different viscosity from same manufacturer let alone different viscosity and different brand don't think it's worth the risk if you don't know for sure

POST 8Original post

As a general rule under force majeur situations I would certainly not mix Mineral and Synthetic Oils that is a definite no no. Try to keep to the same viscosity, but a few points differnce ie 5 max will not be the end of the world. However it is best to stick to the same oil if you have the choice. Regards Big Bob :bye:

POST 9Original post

People, let's think about this. Can't mix oil? So we strip and rebuild our engines at every oil change? If we decide to change viscosity you have your engine stripped and cleaned before doing so? No.... At least 0.5L of oil is left in the engine after every change - in the heads, the sump etc, it just doesn't all flow out when you open the sump plug. In most engines at least 0.5L is left in the engine......I know, it normally ends up on the floor, in the pan and all over me.... So, if we are topping up with 0.5L of different viscosity how is this any different? Mr Big Bob, how then do we change from mineral to synthetic then if we can't mix? Lastly, some people sell "engine flushes" to supposedly clean out the old oil.... just another thing to charge for and markup.

POST 10Original post

Different refiners polymer make-up is slightly different and will have slightly different characteristics under heating. You can mix refiners oil, as long as the viscosity is within the engine manufacturers specification. As for oil remaining in the engine, I would imagine this is why Porsche constantly state they recommend Mobil 1, as it is replacing the oil from the same refiner and make-up (as well as some commercial arrangement of course).

POST 11Original post

As far as I am aware engine oil seals will be designed to be used with a mineral oil or a synthetic oil and will deteriorate if the wrong oil is used, so I would be very wary about using a different type of oil. The viscosity used is usually determined by the operating temperature. I would tend to stick to the manufacturers recomended oil spec as they have designed their engine to run with that type of oil.
