get a bit more power from changing the 'output' end (exhaust), but Porsche didn't leave much on the table there either.

Suggestion

On a standard 3.6 engine you're not going to get more power from the 'input' end of the air pump (aka engine) until you change the whole inlet manifold to the later "double flap" version - Wayne has lots of dyno evidence that virtually anything you do on the stock induction side negatively impacts power; the worst single offender is the K&N cone filter.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm thinking of upgrading the induction system in my 996.2 GT3. At the moment, the proposal is for an IPD Plenum with a 82mm Throttle Body fed by a K&N 57-7001 Air Intake. Has anyone done anything similar, especially with an IPD plenum?

POST 2Original post

leave it stock. unless its a track car and spends its life at the top end. the stock system works well. keep the torque for road use where you need it. the RS air ram duct does push more air in over 70 mph and adds more grunt apparently. maybe a sports panel filter. the 997 gt3 has the bigger plenum and TB but it also has different intake engine headers and mapping to achieve that 415 bhp and different cam profiles. its a lot of $$ for not much gain save the money for track days and fuel and cup2 tyres. NXI120 is the oracle on tuning GT3s and PM him.

POST 3Original post

I was also considering a similar upgrade in the future. But I'd hate to loose even more torque (BMC panel filter already feels like it digged a hole into my lower rpm's) so I might just settle for a 200cel X pipe with software. While hoping to get some torque back with the remap..

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I should have also mentioned that I'll be fitting a full Cargraphic exhaust system: headers, cats and silencers. So I guess the idea was to "open up the other end" so to speak. I was also keen to get a better induction sound; although that could be done with just the K&N of course. I'd also intended to get the whole thing re-mapped once everything was fitted.

POST 5Original post

Hi Jack, I'd forget the plenum as they're a bit of a gimmick. A cone filter may lose a few bhp but they do sound great. I always just buy the Cup filter from the Cup cars. It's made by Cargraphic so you can pay £180 for a genuine one with Cup written on or pay £80 for an identical one without Cup written on. On the Cup cars it's fitted where the MAF goes as they don't run the MAF, but on ours it has to sit where the std airbox did then have a hose to the MAF. I bought the £80 filter, a £20 90 deg Silicone hose, and that's it. Yeah it's sucking in hot air but the car is plenty quick enough. I couldn't care less about being a few bhp down and I certainly can't feel it, if I even am. Personal preference but for £100 it's not the end of the world to remove it if it doesn't live up to expectations. Bottom of page 9 on my thread. :thumb: http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=133731&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=160 Edited to add - I was posting as you replied above. Wayne at Chip Wizards hates larger Plenums and also doesn't rate cone filters. He can get a better graph with the standard airbox. Again though it's my car so I'll do what I want.

POST 6Original post

John I would leave the induction system alone unless you are doing the full MAF delete and then cup filter but with the full carbon manthey style cup feed from the boot lid down sot that is channels air in. with that exhaust system you will free up some power and have a great noise with better flow. the oem set up is very good for road and odd track use. wayne will tell you not to bother with the remap as they gains are so small and save your $$

POST 7Original post

^^ this The RS air scoop is worth an extra 10bhp at 250km/h according to Manthey. Without doubt the cheapest proven performance enhancement you can buy. You might get a bit more power from changing the 'output' end (exhaust), but Porsche didn't leave much on the table there either. Many "sports" headers are actually worse on the dyno than the stock headers; same goes for the rest of the system too. Be cautious, it's possible to produce a bigger "peak power" dyno number but that's likely to be at the cost of power &/or torque elsewhere on the curve. Many aftermarket manufacturers are guilty of pulling this sort of trick in their marketing blurb. Cargraphic, M&M & Kline are the only three manufacturers that seem to be able to genuinely make more power with their exhausts. Tread carefully & do lots of reseach; it's very easy to spend £ ,000s and have worse power than doing nothing...

POST 8Original post

Great thread. My standard set-up car works really well. Love these cars.

POST 9Original post

I have heard exactly the same as NXI20, but probably not a suprise as a lot of it will come from the same source M&M 70mm exhaust looks superb, and should flow enough for 400hp easily, but as said it might work better on higher capacity engines to avoid losing torque at the bottom end. MC

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good advice, which has been heeded. Interestingly, these were the only three vendors I'd considered. I started with M&M, got interested in Kline and then settled on Cargraphic. HP isn't the primary motivator for me; it's a road car and already has more than enough. As much as anything it's about sound. I want it to start with a bark and settle into an angry rumble. Sort of what you'd expect a Porsche GT3 to sound like, no? Instead, mine does a great impression of a Ford Mondeo. Yes, a lot of money to spend just for that. But I think it's worth it.

POST 11Original post

Same here, the intake noise thanks to the BMC panel filter is good, but what comes after really is ford mondeo like. Coming from a heavenly sounding straight six (M3 e46) my inner child really is missing something. I now I now..little things please little minds, but hey... Do you have an Mk2 car? Did you notice an improvement with the Cargraphic exhaust?

POST 12Original post

This is a Kline system with 100 cel cats, std manifolds, intakes all std, std filter. Ignore the squeaky brakes. :floor: to my ears and based on a few 996's I've driven and been in this is what they should be sounding like. Sound is from a go pro on the roll cage.
