This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello- new member here. I can do some basic mechanical work but am no master mechanic! New to me is a 2004 Boxster S 550 Spyder. Drives very nicely but has a bad rattle which Ive determined is likely coming from the Cats. Sounds like there are loose thin metal plates vibrating in both of them, If I thump them with my fist they reverberate. I was wondering what advice you folks might have. They are quite pricey from the main vendors. I saw this ad for Design Tek that was a lot less. What thoughts can you share? Thanks! Michael

POST 2Original post

Are you sure it's from the cats? Could it possibly be the heat shields? They tend to rust a bit and rattle. https://www.design911.com/p/exhaust-catalytic-converter-heat-sheild-porsche-boxster-986/

Pretty sure, unless their not visible. I’ll look again though, and try to get above the cats etc. Thanks

I went back and poked around some more and you’re right! I don’t have the car on jacks so I its hard to reach but i found them. I had the car inspected before I purchased it and the mechanic noted the rattle but didnt know where it came from. So, how do you secure them. Anyone have a easy way to do it? Thanks again!

That's good news. They're a lot cheaper to replace. Otherwise you could just remove them. That seems to be a popular solution as well.

I have seen people on the forum just use metal straps (the kind you screw to tighten). A nice easy fix.
