I kind of disliked all the carbon at first bc it was the only mod that had been done to an otherwise garden variety C2 in the most common color combo, but not that its getting a 3.8 build with all the major upgrades, it feels more aligned with the car.
Leading evidence: 'only mod' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'only mod' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check factory options' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey All,
So as my 996.1 weathers its long winter metamorphosis (engine rebuild), I've started mapping out other longterm plans for the car. The PO has just about every carbon fiber interior piece installed one could possibly think of, including:
-A full center console
-instrument bezel
-AC vent surrounds
-ignition surround
-MAP light assembly
-Door handles,
-Door storage assemblies
-The little strip of accent material that runs across the passenger side area where the glove box would be on a normal car
-The door sills
-The gauge cluster surround
-OEM 3-spoke carbon steering wheel
-OEM carbon shifter lever
-OEM carbon e-brake lever
It all looks pretty slick, definitely helps elevate the car from a base model silver over gray C2, and it's all real carbon, either Porsche OEM or MAcarbon parts (I have receipts from the latter). I'm going to keep most of it, but I'm interested in what the real world value of the steering wheel, shift lever are worth. They're in close to mint condition, but I want a GT3-style steering wheel and a RennLine shift **** for it.
Any idea what I could expect to net for the wheel and shift lever on the forums? They're wildly expensive parts on Suncoast (
WHEEL
and
SHIFTER
)
Hmmm interesting question, does anyone pay those exorbitant prices for CF .. the wheel is limited by buyers that have a grey interior, ive been looking at steering wheels i have a natural brown interior with leather 3 spoke, i went Porsche momo 3 spoke, i personally wouldn't look for a CF steering wheel but there could be a buyer out there, regular 3 spokes with leather get advertised with airbag for around $800, but they tend to sit at that price, so you could likely get a quick sale at $500 ish as someone would think that's a steel, you might could sell just the airbag for $2-300 as its leather but then it detracts from the sale of the steering wheel, its worth more than $500 if you can find a buyer but you might have to sit on it for sometime. the gearknob i bought one for $400 with the leather and the surround in black. i didn't sell my take offs as mine came factory like that and for future originality i felt it best to keep that stuff.. if you car came like that i suggest you keep it also.. check your factory options.
Right on. Kind of what I figured, which is fine. These were aftermarket additions that the PO added, so no need to hang onto them. I might even just keep the wheel, but Im not wild about the feel or look of the shift **** and every penny helps with an engine rebuild happening.
Obviously it depends the condition, which in this case looks mint. Ive seen black carbon wheels without airbags go between 800-1000.00. Gray might be a harder sell as I havent seen many gray interior cars with carbon trim. I dont have a price on the shifter which is weird because I cant remember I saw one that wasnt beat to death for sale.
Yeah, even pulling some bucks from the shift lever would be cool. I feel like the gray might work in my favor since its one of the most common interior colors? Maybe someones gateway drug into carbon.
Especially factory carbon bits. I have a full carbon package in my car but it left Germany that way. Its usually the first thing people notice when they look at our cars, I get asked all the time if I did the conversion or it came that way Im sure you get the same question.
I havent been asked **** yet bc I had it for a whopping 7 days before a piston met a valve and it was shipped off to be rebuilt! I kind of disliked all the carbon at first bc it was the only mod that had been done to an otherwise garden variety C2 in the most common color combo, but not that its getting a 3.8 build with all the major upgrades, it feels more aligned with the car.
Ive not seen what the factory carbon package looks like. Is it just the wheel/levers? Do you have a pic?
Also I see youre a watch guy in Miami. I work as a content consultant for Walt Grace Vintage in Wynwood and was in the vintage watch biz for the last two years. I have an OG Willard and a 6117-6400 that I enjoy a lot. Selling the latter as it doesnt get much wrist time these days and 996 parts are $$$.
Ha!!! Im glad youre local and these pics were taken at Walt Grace.
Bro we have a local 996/986 group called Runny Eggs. Who did your engine work? Yeah man I love vintage Seikos. My PD Orfina is getting serviced now.
@TheChunkNorris
Ha! Great shots, your car looks fab! Mine has the RennLine carbon mirror shells, too.
Im actually based in Brooklyn and work remote, but I lived in South Florida from junior high until I was in my mid-20s. Actually worked at the pizza place in the strip mall next to TuneRS in Coral Springs when I a teen haha.
The engine rebuild is being done by Automobile Associates of Canton in CT; heads were done by Len Hoffman and LN is doing the block machining/IMS Solution install and IMS pinning job. I did a ton of research before going with Auto Associates and they work very closely with LN and have done a ****load of M96s builds.
Love those PVD Orfinas. I have a very similar Heuer Montreal 750.503 in steel.
Ahh Florida blokes, i split my time between Louisiana and Florida A1A care of Lake Worth area... most of the time my 996 is in Louisiana but i bought it from a guy in Fort Lauderdale... watches you say hmmmm i just pulled my 1970 Bulova Oceanographer 666 out of the drawer and it lives ... needs a service though... i have a couple of other watches i enjoy..
you can spot factory carbon fiber because its yellow i still like it though....
And runny eggs ??? i like breakfast food ... i don't have the gingercators though as i have Litronics ...
I did not. Decided to keep em and plan on getting the wheels leather bits and the shift boot redone in Alcantara at some point. Also got 8k on the rebuilt engine since this thread and it kicks *** 🤠
