This seemed to be more aimed towards very large packs in marine use however I wanted to check if anyone has had issues in their cars or had to make any changes to the charging system?

I'm looking at using a LifePO4 battery, and I've been reading that they can put lots of load on the alternator due to the very low internal resistance.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I'm looking at using a LifePO4 battery, and I've been reading that they can put lots of load on the alternator due to the very low internal resistance. This seemed to be more aimed towards very large packs in marine use however I wanted to check if anyone has had issues in their cars or had to make any changes to the charging system? I'm looking at getting a JMT HJTX20H-FP which has 420CCA and 7AH. The whole lightweight battery thing is new to me. Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

First I've heard about that, have used lightweight batteries in the past in track-only cars and never had any issues. Not on anything as large as a 3.6 though.... What I have always done though when using them is also fitting a cut-off/kill-switch which when I'm not in the car is turned off and therefore there isn't any drain on the battery. Have then also used Ctecs to keep the batteries topped-up.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks matey, Good to know. I just did a google search about charging LifePO4 batteries with an alternator and that's some of the info that came up. Good tip re: the cutoff switch.

POST 4Original post

No problem. Have been enjoying reading your build thread! I'm no auto-electrician but with a freshly topped-up battery and it not having been drained due to the kill-switch (I think they're called battery master isolator switches!) then there wont be as much load on the alternator... I think.

POST 5Original post

Am using a deadweight industries lithium battery for over a year, no probs. Superb!
