I have recently had the B&M short shifter fitted + an Agency Power shift linkage.

I believe that to be the case as I read somewhere that if someone wants a shorter shift on a 986 they could get 20% reduction by fitting the std 987/997 item but for confirmation check the model no's on the brochure page it states the models it will fit as 9*6 & 9*7.
Leading evidence: 'Install + an agency power shift linkage' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I fitted the OEM 9*7 SSK which includes the cradle and bolts directly in and am very pleased with it, it gives a more mechanical feel and even with the lesser difference between std 9*7 and SSK it is an appreciable amount similar no doubt to the difference between 9*7 and 9*6, you do of course have to realise that the change is only in the fore/aft movement the gate width remains unchanged.

I previously fitted a standard 997 shifter with agency power joint to my C4S.

I have heard of people who have fitted standard 997 shifters to 996's, and as Kevan says, it gives about a 15% shorter movement, and a nicer feel.

The 996 short shift kit is no longer available - it was replaced by the 997 version, so must be completely compatible.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Sorry don't recognise those ones, but would highly recommend a short shift gear stick for all 996TT owners as it makes a big differences to keeping your momentum going and is a major improvement to the whole experience.

The 997 OEM Kit is a full assembly of the cradle and lever that just bolts straight down as the original to the tunnel, ( fits 987 too ) it then connects exactly as the original to the gear change cables.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys have any of you had any experience with these short shift kits.
http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt697_946_-cma81-cmo110-ct345/Porsche/996--911--1997-05/996-C2-3-4L-1997-08-01/Short-GearShift-Kits/
There was a thread on here but i dont think that it had any of these on.
Cheers
Chris

I have the OEM SSK which I bought off another member who didn't like it and I find it terrific, I feel that the shifts are much quicker now and like the more mechanical feel of the shift although all that has changed is the length of the fore/aft movement.
That is the one with the 997 part number in the catalogue page you attached. I'm not sure how effective the connectors are such as that at the top of the page but would like to know what difference they make since the original parts are quite rigid anyway.
sorry yes I mean thats why its double the cost
I'd love to find someone who has the design 911 options because I'm in the same boat as you
no-one seems unhappy with the oem short shift, but the Design 911 could be even better at half the cost.
The 997 OEM Kit is a full assembly of the cradle and lever that just bolts straight down as the original to the tunnel, ( fits 987 too ) it then connects exactly as the original to the gear change cables.
If you buy the cheaper kits then you will have to remove the cradle from the car ( having removed the long console from the radio console back to the cubby hole ) strip the lever from the cradle and then install the revised lever and refit a bigger job but not difficult.
B&M apparently used to make the OEM option for the 986/996 and that is similar to the items on 911 design, reduction in stroke was then said to be 35% but on the 987/997 it is only 20% due to the std shift being shorter than the 986/996. Try googling Porsche Short Shift and there is a set of instructions with photos by someone called Bob.[

Did this kit come as an option on any cars? I thought the gear change on my car was short and seemless (turbo S), but if theres an improvement available......
997 424 010 00 came as an option on the 987 and 997 ranges, 997 424 010 91 differs or so I've read in that it has Alloy bearing bushes instead of the plastic items.
Standard gear shifters on 987/997 are shorter stroke by approx 15% than 986/996 and are said to fit in the 986/996.
SSK are approx 35% shorter throw than a 986/996 or 20% in a 987/997.
The B&M can fit in either 9*6 or 9*7 and was OEM for the then SSK but if you find you don't like it they say it will require a new full assembly as the two part no's above.[

I have recently had the B&M short shifter fitted + an Agency Power shift linkage. Delighted with the results. The indie that did mine did a good deal & free fitting. Feel free to e mail me if you want details.

So if unsure how much reduction you will get maybe you know someone who will let you try their 9*7 shift to see the difference and roughly double that to see what an SSK will give.[8|]
I think what Kevan says is correct. The 996 short shift kit is no longer available - it was replaced by the 997 version, so must be completely compatible. Therefore, I think you could assume all 997 shifters are. I have heard of people who have fitted standard 997 shifters to 996's, and as Kevan says, it gives about a 15% shorter movement, and a nicer feel. The 997 short shift is a lot cheaper than the older 996 version, by the way. I have it in my Cayman, and it's brill - but it is a different gearbox, of course.
Actually Richard, I think that it's the 997 G97 box which is manufactured by the Japanese company Aisin.
I believe that the Boxster/Cayman G87 6-speed box is of Getrag manufacture.
The Tiptronic transmissions were manufactured by ZF and they also build the PDK transmission.
Jeff
I stand corrected: http://www.aisin-ai.co.jp/english/products/rr.html
As you say, Tiptronics for the 986 and 3.4 996's were made by ZF, and 996 Tips for the 3.6 were made by Mercedes.
The 2005 Sevice Iformation Technik for the 987 says the transmission is completely new, so I assumed it was a different manufacturer.
I previously fitted a standard 997 shifter with agency power joint to my C4S. Although not a true SSK the shifter travel was greatly reduced and gear changes felt less notchy.
I may have posted before and after pics on the forum. I will look for the link.
