997.2 and 987.2 cars are maintaining good residuals atm and the fact that the spyder/R and 997gts are the pinnacle of these cars they will always be sort after!the fact is (and it shows by the opc used market)there is not much love for the new cars with many newish 981/991 for sale and very few 997.2/987.2 especially low mileage manual cars.the fact a little more effort went into the spyder (ie unique bodywork) will make it in the long term imho pick of the bunch and i can see second hand values rising above the 981 gts although a nice car not that unique and personally never liked the audi like interior and i wont even talk about the exterior styling as this is my pet hate of the 981!the 98

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

morning I've decided not to extend the house, so I'll probably look for a Spyder, and was hoping for an autumn/winter bargain.... yeah right! Ideal car is a white or red manual with bucket seats, spyder wheels and sports exhaust. I'd favour a car with PCCB too. I'm not fussed about any other options, but a radio would be good. Is anyone looking to sell? Thanks Steve

POST 2Original post

Ahhh, the Goldilocks spec (basically stock with optional PCCBs and PSE. You can always Carnewal mod the last bit). Something I've noticed with Spyders is that 75% of them are specced as Boxsters (IYSWIM), which ruins them. Considering there's only around 200 of them or so, you're looking at a pool of maybe 50 cars. The odds of a Goldilocks car coming up for sale are slim sadly, and chances of getting a bargain are almost non-existent.

POST 5Original post

Yep, I mocked the crap out of my brother for getting the Spyder when he could have had a nice older Boxster at the time... He definitely got the last laugh on that one given the values of them at the moment. His is so close to Goldilocks spec also (he added SC and radio, for which he fails. Got the PSE though).

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm happy to wait, there is no hurry. I don't expect it to be cheap either, as long as it's exactly what I want and is in the right condition for the price.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If only this car was white or red with Spyder wheels!! http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

POST 8Original post

I’m keeping an eye on the LHD/mainland Europe market and there are virtually none left with decent spec. Prices are around 55-60k € now. I almost bought a perfect example (bucket/white/manual/pse/spyder wheels/AC/no radio) for 45000€ last spring but expected the prices to come down in autumn. Big mistake from what I can tell so far. But there are lots of Cayman Rs on the market right now (for obvious reasons) so maybe I’ll take one with a roof. Good luck with the search.

POST 9Original post

Wonder if these will be 60k+ next summer. With prices of rare Porsches going up like crazy , it's hard to sell these in the full on right spec. It would take an offer of £55k to part with mine in that spec and more atm. Cars too rare in that sort of spec to part with it any less as you cannot buy one back the same. I guess my cars collectors spec and hence I don't use it much now. When you look at other cars at this price range there is nothing else to swap it for unless you double the spend. I keep selling cars too cheap and who knows what Spyders are going to be in a few years time.

POST 10Original post

Mine is a Sept 2011 8K miles Red /Spyder wheels /Buckets/ Manual SS box / Sport Chrono /PSE /Radio/ red dials Tax /Mot till Sept 2015 Full OPC Porsche warranted till Sept 2015. How much do you want it Also advertised on another thread a R for £53K These cars are only going one way

POST 11Original post

Mine's staying till next spring at least, now it's freshly mot'd, tyred and warrantied. The itch to change never really goes away, but the rise in prices is in itself a reason to hold on for a bit longer. And the arrival of the new M3 in October should take my mind off moving the Spyder on....

POST 12Original post

I've managed to cling onto mine through divorce process fortunately.. Sorry those that emailed an interest when first mentioned I might have to sell up. Not full lightweight, but the 'right' spec. It will interesting to see how prices go. I've always believed it could be seen as a 'classic'. If they ever hit 55k+ I'd have to think carefully about keeping or selling up. The question would be, how high could they go though? I still can't think though what else gives such a great drive in a great package with the rarity factor for the price range.

POST 13Original post

They are £55k now to the right buyer in the spec they want. Some people earn that a week , if they want the car it's no money.. Thing now is no one dare sell as they are safe money. If you have some people on the forum paying 48k for the right colour paint, or £350k for a GT3 when they already own the same GT3. Why not ask £55k for the Spyder, it,s cheap for the car and still under list price. Yes I,ll talk prices up lol up, for how good and rare the car is it's under priced at today's prices. If some one offered me £55k I would sell it, and I am sure they will be more than that in a few years.

To state the obvious - any 987 can have the right wheels for about £4.5k minus what you can get on eBay for whatever is currently on it http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/porsche_alloy_whe... It isn't impossible that there might even be someone out there that would do a swap (exceedingly unlikely, but not impossible). The wheels have been through eBay before for less than retail too, but I wouldn't bank on that happening in any given time frame. Lose the car for the sake of colour? Wrapping is always an option too - which you will have to consider if you really want red as those really are properly rare (though white is easily the most common). As has already been pointed out on the thread, when you rule out cars with the wrong seats (eye-watering costs to change) and PDK the pool of UK cars is very small, conferring very real over-the-odds price potential. It is lucky that you didn't have the full sized fuel tank on your list too That said, I am still not sure that they are as rare as manual bucket seated non-centre lock C2 GTSs on passive suspension with the LSD, so not quite a unicorn. POST 19Original post

Bugger!! That was mine. Factory fitted by accident, never made it on to the spec sheet. Sold my white, manual, Spyder alloys, sports chrono, sports exhaust, bucket seated car in May as a part ex for my Cayman. Market has moved on somewhat from then. Lots. Just my luck. At the end of the day, they are just a 987.2 Boxster with potentially dodgy spec and a crap roof. Try living with one. Not bitter me, not at all :-)

POST 20Original post

mrdemon said: no such thing as a GTS with passive dampers ? I thought so, but you may be right actually - it seems that unlike the rest of the Carrera range, the -20mm/LSD option on the GTS did indeed retain PASM and deleting it would have needed to be an exclusive option. Even with PASM, the lower option with LSD is still startlingly scarce though. There was one on the market fairly recently, but they make rocking horse s**t look like a mainstream commodity item to get that coupled with buckets. I have never actually seen or heard of a car with that option, the folding buckets and the centre lock delete all specified ever being on the market. They may not even have made one (at least, not in RHD), but it certainly was possible to spec. In all honesty, even finding a GTS with buckets in the UK is extremely challenging to begin with - far tougher than a correctly specced Spyder. All said though, I don't think that there are any examples of the Spyder how I would have specced it either. Primarily due to the rarity of the (no cost) standard sized (rather than shrunken) fuel tank... (Only know of one of those from on here to begin with). I believe that the secret sauce for it is the seats and suspension, and that aftermarket parts can take a gen 2 S to within a hair if not past the Spyder as a driving machine. I lack the time in type to be able to say that definitively, but this being the internet that is my opinion. I just think that the 987.2S and the 981GTS are such good cars that they will likely always sit either sider of the Spyder on the pricing scale, but to some extent: whether that prophecy becomes true may well depend upon how common or rare the 981 GTS ends up by the time that they finish making them. I note that it superficially doesn't look like many people are speccing those as something other than a slightly faster S either...

POST 23Original post

Will we see a 981 Spyder? That would potentially limit 987 Spyder values (certainly in the shorter term).

POST 24Original post

no new car will limit value only push values up. have you not been looking at the 911 market and what collectors and enthusiasts want ! Every rare 911 is just a 911 if you want to go down stupid street and mod a base one to be better ;-) Colin you can take a 997.2 RS which I might add is more than a 991 GT3 now, but even at 150k, spend 30k on it and have a better car than the GT3 RS 4.0 and save your self £170k.. Spyder has bespoke humps, it's now a future classic because of those and limited numbers. look at 997 Sports classic values, that's not even a GT named car. you will always be able to fit Ohlins to a boxster and say it drives better ! that's never been the point of values. The Spyders a iconic car already. values will be all over the place because of people making them into normal cars though. the stranger cars are the 997.2 GTS and the Cayman R these are strong values now, but can these cars stay like that ? Edited by mrdemon on Wednesday 27th August 08:56

POST 25Original post

My sentiment was similar to Colin's when I decided I fancied a change. To be very collectable they need to be very low mileage and I wanted a car I can enjoy driving without having to worry about it too much. The dearest advertised Spyders are generally less than 75% of their price new 3 or 4 years ago. I looked at prices of even rarer mk1 GT3s - 10 years down the line they are still less than their price new in a market that is going mad. Spyder is a special car though, it is very desirable however objectively better the 981 is. Whether that makes it collectable in the future over and above old 911s I wouldn't like to say.

POST 26Original post

I'm sure you can take a Boxster S, modify it and it will out perform in specific areas. However that isn't really the point. A boxster S that's been privately modified will not be collectable in the future. A Ferrari 250 GTO would be out driven by an awful lot of modern sports cars and probably by a golf gti in a lot of areas, but that commands many many millions to buy. I think the main points are that you can't take a boxster s, go to a parts catalogue and simply replicate a spyder. The spyder will always be unique. It got good drive reviews, even described as one of the best Porsches, add in that it has only sold in low numbers and it becomes collectable. How practical it is, is irrelevant. I think the bodywork is key. Imagine you were rich and you'd gone to porsche and asked them to make a unique boxster s with the same bodywork changes and options to make the spyder. It would have cost an absolute fortune. The spyder will always stand out. Those that stuck with the main spyder options (buckets, wheels) will always be more desirable. The exact 'perfect' spec will always be up for debate. Who knows what will happen with prices. I'm certainly not expecting the silly figures, but the fact they are holding up well and creeping up is nice. I know I would seriously regret selling.

Not bitter me, not at all :-) Despite the proprietary bodywork (and the strictly tongue in cheek nature of your comment), this to me is actually what I think will cap the pricing potential of the Spyder. I note that it superficially doesn't look like many people are speccing those as something other than a slightly faster S either... imho most manual nice spec. 997.2 and 987.2 cars are maintaining good residuals atm and the fact that the spyder/R and 997gts are the pinnacle of these cars they will always be sort after!the fact is (and it shows by the opc used market)there is not much love for the new cars with many newish 981/991 for sale and very few 997.2/987.2 especially low mileage manual cars.the fact a little more effort went into the spyder (ie unique bodywork) will make it in the long term imho pick of the bunch and i can see second hand values rising above the 981 gts although a nice car not that unique and personally never liked the audi like interior and i wont even talk about the exterior styling as this is my pet hate of the 981!the 981 gts is set to exceed some 500 cars each model if the 997 gts is anything to go by with nicely specd cars with manual, buckets, sports suspension being ordered in a very limited number and eventually will also be the most sort after 981gts in years to come! Spyder prices i can see settling at just above their current values and maybe prime examples fetching £50k+ with the caymanR slightly lower along with the 981 gts!As for the 997.2 gts the way gt3 cars are going a nice 2wd manual gts may start heading north to £70-80k especially a sports chassis bucket seated example! footnote: all above imho and pure speculation>

If you are still looking I know that Silverstone have just taken one in, not sure if its out on their site yet, but supposedly it's the 'right' spec No affiliation, we were looking at something else and the sales guy knows I've one so brought it up...

POST 32Original post

I thought about buying a 997.2 manual GTS and adding some Ohlins but as you say so rare to find one with buckets so add buckets as well and it gets too expensive. What I might do is buy a manual GTS, and put the carbon buckets In it from my Spyder , and buy some race buckets to try and get the Spyder down to 1200kg's But it's rare to find a GTS in a spec I want, ie full alcantara with leather dash and manual and ideal with the aero kit. And ofcourse not black. Would be quite a good all round car at that point, but the miles keep going on these GTS cars and prices are high.

DiscoColin said: mrdemon said: no such thing as a GTS with passive dampers ? Edited by DiscoColin on Tuesday 26th August 23:45 It was the 'sport chassis' option you're thinking about. That dropped it 20mm and added the LSD (essentially made it mechanically the same as a Sport Classic). Add to that manual, the buckets, add the rear seat back in and the five stud hubs and you have my ideal GTS. Of which I expect there are none. It's the only recent 911 I'd consider. Why anyone would spec the centre-locks considering what an almighty pain in the arse they are baffles me. Edited by juansolo on Wednesday 27th August 19:33

Ideal car is a white or red manual with bucket seats, spyder wheels and sports exhaust. I'd favour a car with PCCB too. I'm not fussed about any other options, but a radio would be good. And as I said a pool of 3 in white that spec and PCCB with leather and no AC. And mines £55k. That's a good car to miss imo.

POST 46 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Various reasons, mostly minor, some about the car and some about where I am over the next week or two. I don't really want to go into the reasons here, its not fair. Like I said, no hurry. If there are 50 cars of the right spec, 5 of them will sell in the next 6 months......

POST 47Original post

in the last 3 years of me looking and following these cars there is no way 5 cars will come for sale in the spec you want. And no way there are 50 cars made like that in only red or white, I think 30 is even generous. And then I would want a leather dash, one thing that stops me inpulse buying another GT3 or GTS is not finding one with full leather and the rest of the spec I want. I cannot remember even more than 2 coming for sale in the last 2 years. most are PDK, a massive % are black, what's left never has the 3 main items you are after. you could buy a nice white/red one with normal seats cheaper and buy that black SPyder and swap the buckets and PCCB over, I am serious regarding doing that if you want PCCB's that opens up a option imo esp as the black car has buckets as well. the sell the black one on for 34k. I may know of one car, the sister to mine which might be for sale though. Spyder wheels, manual; short shifter; bucket seats; PCCB; PSE, No air con; no radio; leather trim to dashboard & doors; white; 10k miles; 12 months Porsche warranty; 4 year major service just done; 12 months tax & MOT; new battery; excellent condition all round. that's Darrell Wilson cars and he might sell it, but like most of use who own them we all think that until some one makes a offer lol Edited by mrdemon on Thursday 28th August 09:26

DS240 said: Mr D, you reckon there is really only 30 or so UK Spyders with Manual, Buckets and Spyder wheels? He's probably not far off depending on colour... I went through the same thing looking for my Cayman R - once you get into real specifics it narrows things down. I wanted a PDK one as it'll be my daily driver (obviously that's another debate). So that's just over 100 cars..but I wanted Peridot.. So that's how many still in scope 20/30 tops? Essentials were Spyder wheels, buckets, PSE and Air-Con. The rest of the spec is fluff to an extent but how many are out there with what I wanted? If the specs right I'd grab it... Might not see another for a while...

DS240 said: Mr D, you reckon there is really only 30 or so UK Spyders with Manual, Buckets and Spyder wheels? in white or red yes I guess. lets start with manual so about 100 cars. then white or red 60/70 cars then add in buckets and spyder wheels and PSE and got to be less than 30 cars imo. Add leather 1/2 that again say 15 cars add PCCB half that again 7 or 8 cars. hence why I say buying that black car and making one could work out if you want buckets and PCCB's Edited by mrdemon on Thursday 28th August 10:34

mrdemon said: They are £55k now to the right buyer in the spec they want. The question is though, would someone earning £55K a week be interested in buying something as "cheap" as a Box Spyder? I think not. It's a totally different market. Could be wrong though (especially with ultra-low mileage "collectable" examples) and so good luck talking up values

POST 52Original post

The allure of the spyder is quite amazing. I've always liked porches but would never buy one new. In fact I'm uninterested in most new cars, preferring the character and appeal of high points and idiosyncrasies of a model than newest/fastest/high-techest. In fact I was in opc bristol last week (for a service) and the 981s and 911s just left me cold. I got back in my spyder and fell in love again. The distinctive, evocative bodywork, the purity of purpose, the buckets, the alcantara and then the way it drives are awesome - but to me at least as a high performance modern classic. As a car in its own right - not because porsche don't currently make one. But maybe I'm not the typical porsche customer. Anyway all this and the impossibility of what to replace it with mean I would be very reluctant to part with it. But OP if white, manual, short shift, alcantara, pse, buckets, spyders, pcm, climate and sat nav, under 10k miles is of interest let me know. I'm moving house soon and may reconsider.

Like the above post, all us owners are petrol heads, we change cars alot, we test drive new cars, we walk away unhappy and get back in our Spyder's and simile. that's what driving is about. some times you cannot buy that at any price and at night with the roof off not a lot comes close.
