Suggestion

If they were 8mm and you're now down at 3mm, then 5k is reasonably poor, dependant on your road use - motorway miles don't wear much, cornering does.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 996 targa with standard 18 inch wheels and I have done 5k on the rear tyre's and have been told they are on 3mm does that seem good or bad I don't tend to wheel spin etc. Also what pressures are people running I have stock at the moment. What tyres are the recommended for replacements at the moment. Steve

POST 2Original post

Worth getting the alignment checked if not done. MC

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It has been done by a specialist and they are worn evenly across the tread.

POST 4Original post

I also have 18 Inch Wheels on my 996 and from memory I got approx 10k miles on the rears , I have gone for Michelin Pilot Sport PS 3 last set and now PS4 I try to keep them inflated at 44 PSI which is what is recommended

POST 5Original post

Is that 3mm before they're at the wear limiter (4.6mm) or 3mm till they're bald? Most new tyres are around 8mm tread depth, some are much less if they're a specific tyre, like a tyre designed for track use. If they are 8 mm and you're now down at 4.6, then you're not even half way, so 5k would be the normal. If they were 8mm and you're now down at 3mm, then 5k is reasonably poor, dependant on your road use - motorway miles don't wear much, cornering does.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

8mm p zero tyre now on 3-4 mm from bald and 99% mileage on back roads not motorway really. Steve

POST 7Original post

I usually get around 9k out of a set of rears and that's a variation of about 4k motorway and 4k A/B roads.

POST 8Original post

I've measured quite a lot of tyres over the years and they are normally a mm lower on the inside edge . I'm not sure but i think certain makes of tyres are 776 from new with 6 being the inner edge .. 996 certainly have a lower reading on the inner edge regardless . I'm not sure if pirellis are are 8mm from new as i thought 7mm but i stand to be corrected ... got to admit i've never checked a new tyre for the depth .. checked many nearly new tyres and 776 on this model is the norm. Even tyre wear so geo is spot on .. what does that leave us with .. how it's driven and the road surface .. i know full well on my bike that some of the roads i travel on will eat the tyres .. i can see it on the edges .. road tax .. sigh .. not for fixing what we drive on that's for sure . You said 3 mm then 3-4 mm .. i know when i measure them i round up or down .. exact measurements are best in this case as they may be closer to 4 mm than 3 ... 3.5 mm measurement on a 7mm from new tyre is technically half worn .. we .. or rather the mot test says replace at 1.6 mm .. 3 mm is about the limit as per porsche recommendations . Either way though at 5K thats on the low side but not i feel a mechanical issue . You are on pirellis .. swop to michelins ... or bridgestones ... they are a harder ride though with Michelins being softer . In short .. there isn't a mechanical issue that i can think of so its road surface or how its driven , not talking wheel spin here but hard driving perhaps ... just throwing that out there .. pressures at standard are fine for tyre wear ... you drop the pressures a little bit to give a softer ride .. not for tyre wear . That's my thoughts anyways .

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for your reply's I think I will try the Michelin tyres any recommendations on the model of tyre from your experience. Steve
