I love these things, and the idea of zooming around muddy country lanes and snowy alpine ski resorts is great… but is taking them actually off-road opening up the opportunity for massive repair bills for underfloor, suspension and trim bits that can’t quite take it?

Anybody using there Dakar as intended? Had a blast in mine today on some dirt road and was a lot of fun! And nice using a 911 without the risk of jail because of stupid speeds lol
I will be using mine as intended of sorts.
Its being PPFed this week
But then I will go to the Alps this month, Scotland next month and Scandinavia in March.
All hopefully snowy icy freezing dirty wet roads
Then I will spend the rest of the year hitting potholes and getting it s
tty on normal English roads!
I've been getting plenty of use of mine. Just short of 1000 miles now. Fantastic car, especially with the colder weather. Had been hoping for some snow last week, but maybe we'll get some in the coming weeks.
Took it for a blast last night in -1 degree temp along some good B roads which were very greasy and slippy. Lots of fun!! Tyres really inspire confidence to push on.
Need to find more off road tracks to test it on. Suggestions welcome!

Which part of Scotland are you off to? I was think of doing thr NC500 in next couple of weeks, but a few people have been telling me not to, as they say it is brutal on cars!
Lol, i seem to find myself hunting out the potholes instead of avoiding them now!
Nice going, OPer!

You basically need the Dakar to drive on normal roads these days!
Does it feel less painful to drive over a pothole than a Carrera?

Interesting to note. I can't imagine doing 20 over a speed bump in my old Turbo.

Yes my last 911 was a turbo s, and to get to my parents house there is 20 speed bumps! The nose lift used to throw up an overheating error by the time i got there. Have seen under mine at dealer, no crazy delicate underbody aero to break on it, and have had mine in a few off-road tracks with no damage so far!

Nice shots . but a bit like buying a Cayenne to do track days in , mate likes his just says a bit underpowered ... but fun anyway
Yes, feels a little bit slower than GTS, but that due to the tyres. They had to hold it back slightly as tyres couldnt take it. Saying that, it would be quicker than most things with the freezing temp atm. Real fun car.
Fantastic, couple of hundred mile drive this morning in the countryside. This car is phenomenal. Its completely unfazed by the very worst B roads, tracks you can throw at it. I went down single track, tree/bush lined roads today which you'd have your heart in your mouth in a Macan and it dispatched them without breaking sweat! Even farmers had a bemused look on their faces as to how a 911/car had got to where it was!
Need to find some really wide dirt tracks now, so i can really push it in rallye mode, as the rear becomes extremely loose when on and likes to move around. It's the 911 for farmers!!
Its special!!
Even the cows were like WTF! lol

Cayenne does a better job around here mate, goes where the Dakar wont.

You'd be suprised where a Dakar can go. Having just done 9K miles across a couple MY24 Cayenne S and many more miles in previous generations, yes the Cayenne has it beat on ground clearance. But some of the tracks i've been going down in the Dakar I wouldnt have felt comfortable going down in Cayenne for fearing of getting stuck! As for speed, the Cayenne would see which way the Dakar went.

Actually my brother was driving made it to the top of it ,with some wheel spinning, but did make it.

It depends which model Cayenne you’re comparing to - the turbo GT is an immense vehicle that belies its size.

Yes. Driven a few Turbo GT's, its a great car. It would probably have the Dakar on the straights as the tyres hinder the performance of the Dakar, especially the braking. But ultimately you can't hide the extra 1000kg or so of the GT so on any road with a few bends on it, the Dakar would be long gone imo.
An early morning drive today, covering a couple of hundred miles along B roads in torrential rain. This car is amazing at handling the very worst conditions thrown at it. 6-8 inchs of standing water covering the whole road, dispatched at speed without breaking sweat. It tracked completey straight with no movement of the steering wheel at all.
Covered over 2.5k miles in last 7 weeks or so, using it as a daily and quite simply no other 911 can match it for daily use on UK roads and in UK weather. A very special car!!

Have done 5000 miles in my one since September. Absolutely no better 911 for our bumpy potholed Scottish roads.
Had a mega trip in January when I drove it from Scotland to Rovaniemi in the Artic Circle for some fun on the ice.
The event was organised by some Estonian friends. We had 2 days at a rally school and a day on a frozen lake.
I carried a set of studded wheels and tyres with me on the roof basket and changed them over in Helsinki.
The Dakar was flawless and amazed everyone at how drivable it was on the ice.
Rally mode is very rear biased and was great for initial turn in and steering with the throttle but lacked traction out of the corner.
Off Road mode has a more even front/rear split and whilst it did require more work to get the front turned in the extra traction made it much faster.
With most modern cars the ABS gets too intrusive and they don't like it when you left foot brake whilst still on the power. In Rally and Off Road mode you could feel the ABS working to a degree but the Dakar still let you slide it about on the brakes. You could also steer the car on the throttle while using the brakes to tuck the nose in without the computers intervening.
There was a couple semi pro rally drivers who had a shot and they likened it in character to a 20 year old EVO!

Epic trip! What ferry and route did you take from Scotland to Finland?
I took the Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry then drove East to Travemunde in Germany for a ferry to Helsinki.
Once in Helsinki I changed the wheels then drove the 500 miles North to Rovaniemi.
On way home I loaded the car onto the overnight sleeper train from Rovaniemi to Helsinki.
Changed wheels back in Helsinki then ferry from Helsinki to Travemunde. From there I drove west to Dunkirk for ferry to Dover then back to Scotland.
Total trip was 3000 miles driving.
My trips start this weekend with a trip to the Geneva motorshow, the I hope to find some snow somewhere, maybe the alps or maybe Sweden and Norway.
Just going to go as I please so may up any where really :-)
No studs for me though, just the Pirelli winters.

I have been looking at this route, going up through Finland to top of Norway and then driving all the way back to The Hook of Holland.
Any top tips for the ferry? cabin types, food quality, ease of use, loading etc?
And price? do you think it value as seems quite expensive..
Im leaving this weekend but going to Switzerland first en route!!
Fantastic to see some of these being used as intended! Rather a shame they are so limited, as they really are the perfect non GT 911 for the UK. No cage and get rear seats added as mentioned above and you're all good.
Out of interest, for those of you who have them, was it turn down another limited production car to be offered a Dakar?
Monch The ferry is 32 hours but saves 1000 miles each way driving. I just treated as chill out time with a book.
It is quite expensive but I reconned it came to about the same if you counted the extra fuel and hotel costs.
Cabins are basic and clean. I upgraded to a larger double which which was quite roomy with a sofa and table. Food is average but plenty choice at the buffet. Other facilities are a bar, coffee shop, gym and sauna.
Loading and unloading is very straightforward and would be no problem with a normal 911 or a GT car with FAL
Norfolkaston - The 992 roof is rated for 75kg. The 4 wheels and tyres are 110kg plus the weight of the roof basket so I was overloaded!
The roof tent is rated for 200kg stationary so I knew the roof could handle the weight no problem but was slightly nervous the extra load when moving would cause an issue. I started off restricting myself to 70mph but by the time I was coming home again that had creeped up to 80mph!
3000 miles and all seems fine. Nothing slackened or moved.
Thanks 992 Dakar - very interesting and what a trip. I did the Porsche Camp 4 some years ago in that part of Finland and it was a really great experience. I can’t imagine how much more fun it would have been in the Dakar. Enjoy your car!

Have you still got the Dakar and how are you finding it almost a year on? Still based in Scotland?
The Dakar is the ultimate 911 daily. Super quick, compliant and comfortable on the road but also fantastic fun when you find the limit of the off road tyres and start sliding it around.
I did 7500 miles in about 10 months but unfortunately it has to go to make way for something that will see a few trackdays
Its currently up for sale with Aberdeen OPC
Just arrived in Namibia for a week long trip with Porsche Travel Experience driving the Dakar into the Namib desert and Etosha National Park. Should be an interesting trip.
Norfolkaston Sounds like an amazing trip. Enjoy the Dakar.
Hoofy That looks like fun but could get me in trouble with the marshals!

Anyone with any doubt of how able the Dakar is off road, should not worry. It is an amazingly capable car.
Looks lovely.
Does anyone have a sense on how to value these? Pricing seems to have stabilised around the £190k point at the OPCs for cars with the full paint option (so just under list new), but private vehicles seem to be listed at or above that point with normal paint.
Are the sellers out of line trying to recover their premiums if they bought for overs, or is the market placing a premium on the more conservative look?

IMO and as an owner...
I think anything more than list asking original retail is a push,
Maybe a fully painted 0 miles bucket seat, roll cage car for the collector might be more for someone who doesn't worry about money.
But anything else is max list or below.!
Mine fore example:
PTS, comfort seats, 10,000 miles will be well below list for a trade bid, but I am a driver and user.
And for my lifestyle there has never been a better 911 for me.
For someone buying today, if you want one get in soon. As much as they may make another gen 2 version, it will never be free of the new EU legs that will hinder the drivability of the car, speed, lane etc
Also this car is numbered. So it will never harm the used vale.
But if you don't get the USP and ethos of the car, move on. It's not like a normal 911.
On standard chunky tyres it moves about on the tread blocks, it rolls in the corners, the standard exhaust noise is s
t and drones throughout the car.
However,
For a UK and for me scandinavian winter road car it is just fabulous.
But I do have a GT3 as well so summer and track driving is covered elsewhere.
It maybe a shame that so many cars were ordered with buckets which compromise certain aspects of a great long distance road car.
I hadn’t realised the rough roads paintjob is quite such a thing. It’s a two tone painted car and that sounds like a nightmare to own if it gets damaged. Assume some bits are stickers? Mine would have been white with white wheels.

Thank you - that managed to capture lots of my thoughts better than I could - on pricing, use case and seats!
Great thread and thanks for the interesting topics. Here in Europe asking prices are still too high but I agree that they will come down to list or a bit below. There seems to be too many with the Roughroads paint scheme, cage and 918 seats which are definitely a compromise if used as a daily.

Believe you are right about the former ownership of the green car, based on the comments on its instagram page. I did enquire on it as it’s pretty much my ideal spec, but it was too rich for my blood!
