Ok so i got the car out yesterday , smoked on start up but clear after a couple of minutes and what sounds like 1 lifter tapping ,then i drove 60 miles , a bit of steady, a bit of beans, when i arrived was still getting a lifter tap.
Hi guys after a little advice, i have a 2000 model 996 3.4 and to be fair its only done 3000 miles in the last 5 years so doesn't get used much at all, a few weeks ago i pulled it out the garage for the MOT and its was smoking quite heavily from the left bank, after it warmed up it was fine but since then it smokes just from the left bank everytime its started until warm, new oil & filter along with oil/air separator was done 4 months ago, any ideas? :?:
Left tailpipe? If so that from the right hand bank, assuming when viewed from the rear. The exhaust swaps over.
Using any oil? Making any noises from that side? Worth pulling the plugs and having a look.
Could be a number of things but the RHS bank is the ones that are prone for bore score but quite rare on a 3.4 though.
Yes left tail pipe, its a bit tappy when it first starts but soons quietens down, don't know if its using oil as i've only done about 30 miles since the oil change.
Storage doesn't cause bore score, especially as I assume it wasn't smoking previously. I'd just put it down to lack of use or a 'hardened' valve stem oil seal? I'd just monitor it (smoking and oil consumption) and seeif it gets better with some regular use.
I intend getting it out and giving it a good run its just getting the time lol. Might be time to think about parting company and let someone get some enjoyment out of it.
Mine for the last 8 years smokes from the left tailpipe for the first 2 minutes, then swaps over to the right tailpipe for the 2 minutes after that, then is normal. I've heard other owners say the same. Forget about it.
Mine is quite tappety to start with on RH bank, same with the usual start up condensation on one side then both.
Is it smoke or usual start up condensation "smoke"?

Sat for 4 hours, smoked on start up but cleared in seconds, drove home and still got the lifter tap? any ideas anyone?
