I ave HID's factory fitted on my daily, and the washers were broken on the left side (although they still self level ok).

I took the front bumper off and spent ages stripping everything out and replacing the broken pipe.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is the 3rd amendment for MOT testers.

And I was just thinking of getting some HID for one of my other cars (work basher) not the 996.
Looks like I wont now.
And that the manual that the tester will reference from!.
I think I'll be arguing that the following exemption applies on the GT3:
"It is also worthy of note that a few high performance vehicles fitted with HID headlamps that
have barely any luggage space and stiff suspension do not require a self-levelling system."
Vosa don't want any OEM Halogen system setups retrofitted with HID conversion kits.
And testers are having to use this manual as reference so I think it will be tuff to get a green paper out of it.
Agreed, no problem with the suspension especially with the location of a 911's boot.
Interesting note about headlamp washers, as they cant be retro-fitted at a reasonable cost so it will be interesting to see if this new rule is retrospectively introduced or from vehicles registered after the date the law was introduced.
On an up-side, 996 headlamp units are pretty easy to remove and the older pre-facelift are cheap to buy 2nd hand. I still have my old yellow ones in the garage so it may be worth swapping them over for the MOT.
calm down calm down
someone asked a similar question before christmas and i put in a post about this there is also a pistonheads thread on the subject which is worth reading
this is the VOSA GUIDANCE please read the testers manual there is a differance and then the pistonheads thread to explain why the variance

what a cockup the rules are, the intention I guess was to stop all the idiots placing HID bulbs in normal xenon headlights or maybe it wasnt just to sow fear and confusion if you are interested in putting proper HIDS in your car please do it properly and by a whole projector unit and bulb I used this company and have been absolutely delighted with the results they are superior to the porsche factory HIDS i have

or wait a bit and see how things pan out the one thing about the MOT has always been that certain aspects of it are down to the inspector themselves and their opinion
There statement has been amended three times,
The latest quotes "Therefore, in order to pass the MOT
test, vehicles fitted with after-market HID systems would also need to be fitted with headlamp
cleaning and self-levelling systems".
My advise to anyone would be don't retrofit projector or not until 2013 [
]
Or go down the Litronic OEM route.
Forgive my lack of knowledge, but whats the difference between hid and xenon. I thought they were the same thing and what is the issue with needing headlight washers?/how do they know if a system if aftermarket or not?
The OEM xenons will have headlight washers fitted, and when switched on go through a levelling sequence i.e. the beams move up and then down. On cars with aftermarket HIDs washers may or may not have been fitted to the car when manufactured, but they wont have the levelling mechanism installed
This is the problem most MOT testers can barely read let alone DE-sypher Vosa's rule book.
If a car fails people fix it, they don't want to go to another MOT test station pay another £40 quid and have the chance of being told the same thing again, Its a catch 22 situation.
And by Vosa now including Safety systems/ECU remapping there handing back open chqeue books to all the wheeler dealer garages.
No offense but the only reason your car passed was the tester didn't know his job. (which is my point).
Its all in Vosa's statement in black and white.
Richard,
Perhaps the tester did know his job and had read this:
"...a few high performance vehicles fitted with HID headlamps that have barely any luggage space and stiff suspension do not require a self-levelling system..."
(From your VOSA link)
I'm going to carry on going to my classic-friendly MOT man[

Good news! Panic over. As I said in my thread on this subject I started before Christmas, my C2 just passed this morning with no advisories on this matter.
As others have pointed out, the rule book states "Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps
may
be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system. Where such systems are fitted, they must work;"
HTH.
he means the vosa document if he had read the mot testers manual then all would be clear
http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_170.htm
as I explained the vosa documents is their opinion it is not at the moment the legally enforceable one
anyway the MOT testers use their manual as their guide and as the man says MAY
the idiosyncrasy of this is that if you have normal xenon headlights with a washer and it doesnt work you fail....DOH
I am pleased to hear you passed Martin after all the hullabaloo that has been doing the rounds over this with such expert opinions from the AA etc being passed round as fact just goes to show organisations like the AA really dont know what they are talking about
I ave HID's factory fitted on my daily, and the washers were broken on the left side (although they still self level ok). I took the front bumper off and spent ages stripping everything out and replacing the broken pipe. I took it to the MOT station told him it took me an age to repair the washers as the car had HID's and he said 'oh don't worry they don't come into it' lol. Oh well....
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but whats the general concencus about wether wipers are needed if they aren't already fitted? Also is it possible to retrofit washers if they are needed?
