Easiest way to check is pop a headlight out (2 minute job with the tool) and check the date code underneath.

If you want the classic amber you could probably get a straight swap pretty easy here or on boxa.net since de-ambering or swapping for clear lens lights is much more popular than people with clear lenses wanting amber lights, in fact google Boxster amber lights and you will find countless threads explaining how to remove the amber, and it wasn't to uncommon for people to get them changed by Porsche.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All
My 1999 996 c2 coupe is fitted with clear lenses.
I was wondering what year did Porsche move to clear lenses from the amber lights,I really like the retro look of the amber lights, just not sure if my car would have had them fitted originally.
cheers
brewy
They removed them in 1999, though I suppose an early 1999 car could have been amber, funny how they are known as fried eggs but the actual fried eggs headlights only existed for the first year of the 996's 6-7 year run.
The Boxster had amber lights for a few years as it came out in late 1996 but they both went to clear lenses after the first year of the 996's production, then the 996 went to the turbo style lights in 2001.

Hope that answers your question.
Love ambers. Just bear in mind there are very minor internal styling differences between boxster and 996 headlights. Most people wouldn't even notice. Just do google search. Personal choice.
Plenty on ebay too. Easy to swap out. Check condition very carefully as often there's minor damage or imperfections on second hand ones. Depends how fussy you are.
Then remember to share before and after photos
I'm in the same situation with mine, but it's a 2001 model. I just think the earlier lights suit the cars a lot better!
Can't bring myself to fit none period correct lights though...
There is some ambiguity when .1's switched from amber to clear, and might have been an option at purchase for some. So just fit whatever you prefer. It's your car and no one else will know how it came out of the factory either

This.^^^
Apparently C4's got clears first but I'm not sure about that, or why it would be the case. It was model year '99 anyway, which is cars produced/sold from September '98.
Easiest way to check is pop a headlight out (2 minute job with the tool) and check the date code underneath. It's a symbol moulded into the plastic.
Like this - April/May 1998. (although this isn't the headlight) -
The above was from my old C2 which was registered in November '98 and had clear lights/indicators which had a similar date stamp to above.
Ambers look nice and retro and can work on non aero-kitted cars. Any GT3 kitted cars need clears to look right though.
As said just use what you prefer. The cars aren't rare or valuable enough to warrant fitting parts you like less, just for the sake of originality.
original fitment
just checked my car and it says 1998 10th month.
so it was originally fitted with clear from the factory, i do like the ambers but the fact that to was delivered with clear from factory means im going to leave it as it is.
im surprised that it had clears fitted so early on, always had it in my head that they had been fitted at a later date.
